Anything S10 Specific about Battlewings other than size?

$227 at Rocky Mountain...
Yes, the Battlewings come in three specs and most tire stores sell the middle-spec which is OEM fitment for the R1200GS. But the S10 actually specs a "E" series tire that typically retails for $35 more a pair. There is also a "G" spec for the F800GS and 800 Tiger. (Whether it is really important to use the E spec on the S10? I don't know, but that's what it comes with from the factory and if the E spec is available, I've always figured it was worth a few bucks to get the exact spec tire. There was another thread with a lot of speculation about the actual difference between these tires and no one really knows - I wrote Bridgestone and got a generic reply that BS does special version tires to fit specific bike requirements, but nothing specific. )

Regardless, $227 is a very good price for the non-E Battlewings.

I see the K60s are highly recommend, yet at the same time I've seen quite a few reviewers saying they aren't good in the wet on pavement….

What does that actually mean? Does that mean going down the highway on wet roads you're going to hydroplane and crash? From the reviews I've seen it seems like if traffic is moving at say 65 mph on the freeway, you probably shouldn't be going that speed…

Looking for a more detailed definition or review of its wet weather performance….

It means they tend not to grip the road as well as say the oem Tourance EXP. Symptoms vary but I noticed the T/C light was a regular visitor on the clocks with K60s fitted (wet or dry roads) I would also add the S10 ABS will probably cover up for poor wet grip under braking (as long as your upright) . If your a hypermiler or light on the throttle you probably wont notice these foibles of K60 performance , but for me they weren't going to be a long use tyre as performance /handling were too compromised limiting rate of acceleration and top speed as well due to instabilities introduced by the K60s, these weren't present on the original EXPs and were cured by the Anakee3s fitted after the K60s.

It means that tire threads are like oil threads - everybody has opinions and most are formed with anecdotal subjective experiences and in the absence of any hard data.

Not wanting to go back and read 6 pages of this thread; I'm wondering what the Tourance EXP is like on gravel roads compared to the Battlewings.

Well, I'll give you that one Mark. Opinions vary. I didn't care for the EXPs at all. Roads with more tar in the asphalt meant that when wet, the EXPS were all over the places. They wore unevenly in the front, rear wore about like most rears do for me. I pulled them at 6200 and was happy to be done with them. I had already run K60s for a set, having changed to them at 700 miles. I only put the EXPs back on to wear them out on a trip to Dallas-Ft Worth, including some hill country riding in the wet. Really wished I'd had the K60s instead.

In reference to Macca's comments, I believe they are correct for a rider that uses large throttle movements. No harm there, but as a smoother rider, I have no complaints with wet traction and K60s. I have over 81k miles on my '12 Super ten, most of that running K60s because they hold up better than any other tire. I used them for my 10k mile Iron Butt Rally ride because even PR3 Trails wouldnb't last as long as the K60s. I am just finishing a 8k+ trip to Alaska on one set of K60s and they still have plenty of life left. That included riding the Top of the World Hwy between Dawson City, YT and Chicken, AK in less than ideal conditions, and plenty of road construction, rough roads all over BC, YT & AK.

The K60s work well for a very wide mix of conditions and inspire confidence in mud, gravel and other off pavement conditions while still doing good duty on pavement, wet or dry. (they are NOT Kenda Big Blocks or TKC-80s, but they last a heck of a lot longer too). Wet paint lines when brand new, you bet they will slip! So apply some common sense and don't whack the throttle in the rain while crossing paint lines. Or maybe any other time in the wet. ::) Like that would be a good idea with any tire. The only time I see the ::018::TCS light flash is when I am flogging the bike.

+1 for Eric V's comments. I am on a knobby kick these days but the K60 was and will be my "go-to" tire when I want to ride a tire that does everything pretty well and no one thing perfectly. Like and ADV bike... you gotta pick your compromise somewhere. The K60 is the best blend of multi-surface performance, durability, and cost that I have found. And yes... I have sifted through most of these tiresome tire threads in hopes of "seeing the light" and tried a few of them myself.

Now all that notwithstanding... if Heidenau would make a BigBlock style knobby with their more durable rubber compound... I think we might have a winner. Until then, I am ordering a Mitas e09 tomorrow to see what damage I can do to it.

Some good points to consider. Like everything a trade-off. I'm thinking of going with the Tourance or something thats like an 80-20 or 85-15 tire…

I was just wondering if the K60s were more slippery than say riding any street only motorcycle with OEM tires on it in the rain.. sounds like it depends on how you ride! :)

Also dont want to go back the whole seven pages, but how does you people compare the Mittas E-07 to Heidenhau K60's ?

Here in South Africa the competition is good between the two but it seem that the Mittas win by traction and the Heidenau by mileage ,,,

Re: Tires available in Super10 sizes, a comprehensive list

Another +1 to EricV's reply. I come from a 20+yr road racing and dirt racing back ground. A good rider can ride nearly any tire. What we (racers) don't like and won't stand for is a tire that is unpredictable. Any tire freshly mounted is going to move around till the tire is properly scuffed in. Any rider can give inputs that will make the best tire break traction. In my experience it is the rider who is most at fault/responsible not the tire.

I've got a KLR with 17" motard's (street) and have done numerous national DS events riding two up and never had issues. Sure we slid around a few times but often others would come up and scratch their heads wondering how we got thru so and so on that.

The new Conti's are getting some rave reviews at the moment in the UK. They seem to be a decent answer to a street tyre that is some use off road, obviously not as 'off' as a K60 but more use than an Anakee 3 or the like.

Bah! They are OK - not great, but not dangerous. If you do a lot of riding in the wet probably get something with nice sticky rubber - but don't expect to get 12,000 miles from them...

Ordered a new set of TKC-70s two weeks ago. Expected in around October 20. We shall see how they fare once I get them on and have some miles under their belts.

Short update on these new TKC-70s. They are not on yet as they have not yet arrived. Updated arrival is now November 20. I'll update again once they arrive and I have them installed.

Have 1000 miles on a set of Dunlop Trailmax TR91' and they seem like no warm up is needed, very sticky on the mountain curves with nice lean in, even some logging roads, 1' deep rivers (no mud) with out any problems. Time will tell on mileage, got 8700 miles out of the oe Metzeler exp'.
Happy with them so far.
