Anyone had any feedback on the Michelin Pilot Road 4 Trail yet?

Re: Tires available in Super10 sizes, a comprehensive list

I am running a trail on the front and a regular RP4 in the rear. Best tires ever for my use. ::008:: I stayed away from the trail on the rear because they use a softer center compound. ??? That makes absolutely NO sense to me at all. But the regular RP4s have given me great performance and the best ever mileage. I was a bit nervous about leaving on a "coast to coast and back" ride last summer with almost 4000 miles on my first set of RP4s, fearing I would have to change out the rear on the road. But they made the complete trip with no problem. I had right at 10,000 miles on them, and I am sure it could have gone at least another 1000 around town, but I went ahead and changed the rear to be ready for a longer trip. 4000 on that one now and and it is just beginning to square off from all the highway miles but still plenty of tread. The front still looks pristine and I am sure it will out last 2 and maybe 3 rears. For comparison, I made the same trip the year before with Battle Wings, my previous favorite tire, and it was done at just over 7,000 miles.

Re: Tires available in Super10 sizes, a comprehensive list

Thanks Jaeger. I have ordered a full set of the Trail, the soft center of the rear wont be a problem as most of my summer riding will be twisty Alpine roads. Now, unless unavoidable, I try to stay of highways as much as possible. At the moment I have Ankee 3's on, I can't complain about the wear rate as they have done three trips to the Alps and a run around northern Italy. That has put nearly 9000 miles on them, the front is nearly done, but the rear still has 5mm of tread. But they are noisy and twice I have experienced an unexplained weave, once two up and not going more than 30 mph, the second was solo and on a fast Belgian highway, luckily it was early morning and quiet. Pressures where spot on.

Re: Tires available in Super10 sizes, a comprehensive list

On my cross country commute with plenty of corners, hard acceleration and braking, I got 4,822 miles on a PR4 Trail Rear and 6,020 miles on a PR4 standard rear. So on those numbers you get around 25% more mileage on the standard tyre.

I only use the bike for commuting so both tyres did exactly the same roads with exactly the same riding style one in Spring/Summer the other in Summer/Autumn. I couldn't detect any noticeable difference in wet and dry grip between the two.

I've got Avon Storm XMs on at the moment, which are now over half worn and I am starting to hate.

Re: Tires available in Super10 sizes, a comprehensive list

More on the worn-out tires thread. I'm just finishing my 2nd PR4 on the rear. Wear bars are through at 7500 miles. The first PR4 probably would have gotten similar miles, but picked up a nail at about 6500 mi and became a spare. The front has a PR4 Trail (chosen to match the size of the original Battlewing) and still has lots of life at 14,000 mi. They're great tires for bikes ridden mostly on paved roads -very predictible and smooth cornering compared to the Battlewings. I'm not sure why the S10 is so hard on rear tires compared to the VStrom and Tiger 800 I had previously, although it is a lot heavier bike. The rears are wearing out in the center despite lots of riding on curvy roads and very little on high-speed motorways. I normally run a lot higher air pressures than the owner's manual recommends (about 41 psi front and back), but am now experimenting with something closer to the recommended 33/36 to see if that reduces the center wear. Suspect it will be at the expense of reduced gas mileage, but then gas costs a lot less than tires. Also I use balance beads and get very uniform wear profiles with little cupping. Except for the wear life, I'm entirely satisfied with the PR4 trail/PR4 combination. The new tire will be another PR4.

When I get through the new Trail rear, I will try the standard PR 4. Thanks for all your feedback ::001::

Re: Tires available in Super10 sizes, a comprehensive list

I read all the pages and it seems most people are looking for an on/off road tire (no surprise considering they are going on a Tenere). But I'm looking for tires that will last a long time on the road. I do endurance rides, some endurance rallies, and just plain ride for pleasure. 4200 miles in 3 weeks of ownership. My OEM Battlewings are wearing OK for OEM tires, still have a couple thousand miles left if I stay off the highways (long trip last weekend, 2200 miles, left me with a lot of center wear).

I'm not specifically looking for long lasting touring tire; I'm looking for the most bang for the $$$. But I AM willing to pay a bit more per mile for a longer lasting tire so I don't have to replace them mid-trip or swap out perfectly good tires just because I'll be putting another 2000 miles on them over a weekend. I also enjoy my corners, so I want something that can lay over and handle the turns. I was impressed with the peg scraping ability of the Battlewings last weekend on Rt. 50 in WV when I was leaving peg feelers behind in the mountains.

I also may see a few graded dirt roads. Not enough that would warrant a true off road or dual sport tire, in fact I've managed quite nicely on my ST1300 on these kinds of roads. Just pointing out that dirt is a possibility.

I was eyeballing the ME880s after reading a couple of the posts about how well they last. If they can corner well they may fit the bill. K60s sound good if they handle well on the street- how do they corner with those blocks? I should probably stick with a more street oriented tire, but there were a lot of opinions about the K60s lasting well. They do cost more than the ME880s, so if they don't last as long (sounds like maybe 4 or 5k less miles?) then I should probably go with the 880s.

Anyone have any newer opinions since some of these posts were made?

Hmm, you sound familiar... Feel free to PM me. ;) I ran the IBR on K60s. If you're leaving peg feelers behind, we need to discuss riding style too. I typically see 12k from the rear and 20k from the front on K60s and have run several sets to end of life. Nothing else has lasted that long. PR3 Trails were a joke, 6800 miles and done, going away very fast in the end in heat conditions. Anakee 3 went 8k and had more left just prior to the IBR, but was pulled early for fresh tires to do the IBR.

Prior to the '13 Butt, I couldn't find anything else that would last over 10 for the rear. I suspect the new PR4 Trail will, but have not run them. The K60s won't slow you down in the corners any. Fresh tires in the rain will engage traction control, especially crossing paint lines under throttle, but realistically, they do just fine in the wet under any other conditions. I noticed some slippage in the rain on the first day with them, after that I never did, including high wind and torrential rain at night on the slab or twisties.

Similar for me...K60 rear has about 5K and if current wear rate continues no question it will make 10K.

I do shift my weight, but even so, a loaded up bike pushed hard is capable of scraping. Preload set high, suspension set to hard. I was leaving a couple sportbikes at every corner during one stretch! They had me in between, but they apparently didn't have the cornering experience...because their bikes should have left me behind in a hurry.

You likely need a re-spring to handle your weight and riding style. I'm running a 1300 lb spring for endurance rally use, with the oem shock. I don't drag hard parts. I know some good riders that swear how easy it is to drag pegs on the Super Ten, but IMHO, that's taking up more of the traction pie than I choose to on public roads.

Re: Tires available in Super10 sizes, a comprehensive list

I:m not happy with the rear Tourance NEXT... it is squared off with 5.2k miles with 2 to 2.5/32" near the center threads in spite of running some serious twisties. First time this happened.
As I am going on a longer trip to the Smokies, I need a new rear tire and won't be a NEXT...
Questions:
Did you run a rear Anakee 3 with a front NEXT or similar combo?
....or you rather use the standard rear Tourance with the front NEXT combo?

Conti Trail Attack 2 front tire

Stock size is 110/80R-19

but

120/70R-19 is also available (I ran this size on my old BMW F800 GS and it worked great on that light bike)

Mainly ride on twisty pavement

Anyone have any experience with the 120 on the big Yamaha?

Re: Tires available in Super10 sizes, a comprehensive list

since ive moved to Indy my 80s have taken a beating on all these damn straight paved roads. the center of the rear is almost a supermoto tire... front is looking weird...

So im in need of a new tire. thinking about the 60s, but i was wondering if there were any issues putting a new 60 on the back and keeping the 80 on the front?

how much life does this thing have?

Re: Tires available in Super10 sizes, a comprehensive list

After 5800 miles, the tread is 1/32" above the rear bars and 2/32" above the front bars... by far worse than the previous EXP.
I replaced the rear tire with A3 before my upcoming trip of 4500 miles. I just hope the front tire will handle it... I hate to replace tires in the middle of a trip.
