Are the K60s over all pretty smooth? I do a lot of road riding but would like to have some off road ability. Mainly dirt roads and stuff. Nothing crazy.

I came from a multistrada so i am used to vibrations. Haha
The K60s give some vibes at lower speeds, like sub 20 mph and I notice some extra mirror vibes at over 75, but for everything in between, it's pretty much the same as any other tire. Best when new, slowly deteriorates over the miles, but nothing unusual. I have noticed that at certain points in the front tire wear the K60s will want to bias to one side, then as they continue to wear, change to the other side or back to neutral. Seems to be how the tread blocks are designed and wear. Not a deal breaker and they don't pull, just one of those things you might notice with no hands on the bars as a slow tendency to go one way or the other after the first 10k miles or so.

@Checkswrecks - Boosted hasn't had the chance to put as many miles on as us. And has other things on his mind than the forum some days.

Glad to see you posting Boostedxt

Thanks eric. Sounds good to me. I want a tire to do the alaska trip on which is 13,000 miles. The K60 i hope will last the whole trip. I might use road tires to get there then change them out in Fairbanks. Not sure.

Thanks again.
The K60s are a good choice. Some sizes are available in Fairbanks as take offs and are pretty much full dirt tires. Never know what will be available though. Some folks just rent a KLR for the Haul Rd and leave their 'nice' bike in Fairbanks. Something to consider.

If you want to have a long lasting street tire and put big miles on it (15-18 K miles + on the rear ) and a similar amount on the front, the bias ME 880 will do the trick. I have a set in my garage.

The important decision is to buy the hard to find 880 rear that is the METZELER ME880 MARATHON 160/70B-17 M/C 79V, REAR (REINFORCED)

Combine this with a front bias ply http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=33_165_172_595&products_id=3476

A friend of mine Dick Fish rode from Cardston Alberta to Ushuaia on a set. It has been alluded to that he rode briskly on the trip, he ran TKC 80s for the Prudhoe Bay to Cardston leg. Dick set the still unbroken record of 21 days and 2 hours Prudhoe Bay -Ushuaia. The portion of the ride on ME 880's was about 13K miles over some highly abrasive road surfaces

+1 on these tires for the street. This ME-880 is the only tire I could ever get more than 7000 miles on my 1994 Yamaha GTS1000 that I used to have, most barely made 5K. The performance was pretty decent too. I never used the front though, just the ME-880 rear with a avon, continental, or pirelli radial sport touring model front

Karoo 3

Looks like it is available now?

Comon, one of you dirt hounds need to go mount one and tell me it is great off road and you can get an honest 4000 miles out of it.

(I know I know....why don't I get one? I already got 3 new rears coming because I'm an anxious idiot about tires right now. A Big Block, 140 K60,and a 150 K60 that I'm gonna butcher the center strip and see if I can not ruin it)

We're pricing new tires for both bikes so I put together some current numbers for comparison.
No affiliations or endorsements, just relating what we saw today on tire models that had our interest:

There are several threads on the topic if you search from the front page. The search bar here is a little weird to get used to - it searches the thread/topic/whole board depending on how deep you are.

Re: Tires available in Super10 sizes, a comprehensive list

So the latest ADVMoto explained that the new Big Block Kenda is supposed to last longer than the previous one.

That could explain why the one I discarded in Colorado was still going strong.
I fully expected to use it up on my Ouray trip and made zero effort to extend it's life.
I wasn't surprised at it's rock climbing prowess, since it LOOKS like a rock climber. But it was also a fantastic tarmac tire and felt great on my many journeys up n down the $million highway. Even made a run to Lake City and Gunnison on it. Not to mention down to Albuquerque.

I kept thinking it should be dead, but wasn't. I kinda felt bad mounting the Karoo 3's before melting the Big Block.

Now I think I know why!

Where did you source yours ... a guy I work with loves his on a GS800 but must have picked up an older compound - tearing through them.

I'm toying with these, the Karoo 3, or the Mitas. Going to need to order something in the next few days. I spend a lot of time on pavement but hate the EXP's. I didn't like the one ride I took on the K60 even though it would get me the best mileage I want more when I actually hit the dirt so going to skip those for now.

Re: Tires available in Super10 sizes, a comprehensive list

I knew I would need a rock climber for the Ouray trip.
So I ordered 1 BB and a set of Karoo 3's from the yamaha dealer in Montrose Colorado.

Since they didn't have them in stock, I assume they got fresh stuff from their distributor. And like most dealers, probably parts unlimited?

I now think I might have gotten the newer BB.

It wasn't any kind of mileage king. But I TRIED to melt it. I had no intention of running it for more than a week.

Some of you might be interested to know that I put 9000 miles on the rear tourance EXP tire and could have done another 1000 miles. Tire is great I think and am sticking with them, the front is still fine so ill let it go till the end of next year another 9000 miles and then change front and rear with this tire.

I would be very happy with that kind of mileage. How do they perform in the turns? Do you feel like they give you enough confidence and grip to touch down the footpegs?
How's the wet weather grip also?
Thanks. ::008::

Re: Tires available in Super10 sizes, a comprehensive list

I just put about 1000 miles on the new Tourance Next. Excellent street tire, I figured it would be as it looks like a street tire. I did some serious road work with my sport touring buddies over the weekend and the tire had plenty of grip and road feel. I also had the chance to do some ATV trails and to my surprise it generated plenty of drive (on some fairly steep trails) and steered well enough that it's a for real 90/10 tire imho. I'm sure mud or deep sand would be a problem but if you're a 90/10 adv rider, this is a good tire. My Tourance EXP's lasted me about 5K miles so hopefully this will last a bit longer.

Rocky Mountain ATV MC has some very good prices on Metzeler Tourance tires. And free shipping!

Good find. Tourances used to command a pretty hefty price premium over the Battlewings but they appear to be almost on par these days and the standard Tourances (not the Next) have a well-deserved reputation for longevity. Quite possibly the best option on a $/mile basis.

Still looking for the sub-$220/pair pricing I've gotten on S10-specific Battlewings in the past, but these days may be long gone.
