This will be my first weekend of getting out to WV to check how the roads have survived the winter. It's a tough chore, but someone has to do it. ::)

I found myself watching the videos from the first and second year of this event. There have been a lot of changes over the years.

2012 doesn't sound like all that long ago, but back then every single participant easily fit into the same video shot with plenty of room to spare. This was the last year the Teneres overwhelmingly dominated the event.

2013 was our first international year with Alex coming down from Canada. It was fun remembering Sails2xxs going through the trees.

Headcount is about 125 now and still growing. Plenty of room for more.

It has been a while, time for an update.

I made it out to Romney last weekend and they were pretty much locking down their final plans, and looking forward to the event kicking off. Here's what I know at this point.

On-Site Food: I don't have the details, but I know the Ruritans were having a difficult time committing to have volunteers available to support the event. So this year Romney has contracted with Gretta's Kitchen to support the Camp N Ride. My understanding right now is since there will be people expected all day due to the ongoing factory test rides, the food will be available all day.
Planned hours are:
Friday 11:30am to 6:00pm.
Saturday: 7:00am - 4:00pm.
Saturday evening (Romney sponsored dinner). 6:00pm
Sunday - For the last two years the Romney Lion's Cub has held a pancake breakfast. I've heard great reviews on it from our riders. If the Lions Club is not doing their pancake breakfast, then Gretta's Kitchen is expected to return to the dealership. So far there is no confirmation on the breakfast situation for Sunday.

Shuttle: The dealership will provide rides on the hour between the motels and the dealership on Saturday evening until 11:00pm. It will be done on request only. Last year they did not have any takers for this shuttle offer. There were enough people that had cars that everyone seemed to get between the venues with no difficulty.

Facilities Port-a-potties and wash stations will arrive Wednesday afternoon. Due to the need for the dealership to use their loading dock on Friday the showers will be setup sometime Friday afternoon. When the dealership is open people are welcome to use the bathrooms inside.

Volunteers If you are onsite and willing to spend the day helping make the event run smoothly, please see Checkwrecks or me (we're the guys in the red shirts). Anticipated volunteer jobs will include sign-in desk, greeting arriving riders and pointing them in the right direction, and a general floating answer guy. As I've mentioned before this is our first time utilizing volunteers. Please be patient as we work out the details on this new aspect of the event.

Yamaha maintenance talks Yamaha is going to be offering quick 5 to 10 minute talks about maintenance owners can do on their bikes. Actual schedule and topics will be posted at the event.

Tires It is unusual for Romney to have big bike knobbies, but they do find themselves a supply of Kenda K784 and Continental TKC80 at the moment. If you want some knobbies at a Romney price I suggest giving them a call before they go back to their status of not having big bike knobbies in regular stock.

Speaking of Romney....let's face it, these guys sponsor this event, but they really don't do a lot of shouting about it. I want to acknowledge them for all they do.

As you may have guessed, my role in getting the word out about this event provides me with the opportunity to really get to know Kevin (owner) and Larry (GM). I've come to greatly appreciate the difference in personality between the two, and how well those differences mesh to create what we all know as Romney Cycles. An example of this was when I asked Larry if they had been named #1 Suzuki Dealer in the USA again. He said, yes they were named the #1 again for 2015. More units sold than any other dealer in the country. I asked if they ever advertise this fact? Larry told me he would put it on the web site and paint it on all their vehicles. Kevin is uninterested in any of that. That would feel like bragging to him, and bragging is not something he's interested in doing. They are proud of it, they know they did it, and that's good enough. How many businesses do you know that work that way? I know they are sensitive enough to the situation that I asked them before I said anything here.

If you appreciate all work and expense they put into to making this happen, please do take a moment to let Kevin, Larry and Heather know you appreciate it. Of course, if you have an opportunity to throw them your business they will greatly appreciate it. Look around when you are there, their prices make it an easy place to support. There's a reason they are number 1.

Did a little scouting on Saturday.

Was surprised to find this...

On Saturday the GWNF web site said Squirrel Gap will open in April. Today that note is gone, so it may be open now.

The WV/VA border crossing from Mathias is in great shape.

I'll keep looking around each weekend until the event, but so far the roads I've seen are all in great shape.

Checks, I remember when I bought my Tenere in '14 every office wall is covered with #1 in the country plaques from all sorts of brands year after year... It's crazy. I'll buy my junk from them from here on out. I got a ride to WV from Buffalo, NY, paid gas & hotel and STILL saved money....

I'm sure the squirrel gap road will be open soon as the spring gobbler season will be starting soon... Keep your heads down when riding through that area :D

Sunday food update...

We have confirmation that the Romney American Legion is dong a pancake, bacon and eggs breakfast at their site on Sunday morning from 8-12. Everyone is welcome to attend.

They would like to have an idea if we are going to flood them on Sunday morning. So when signing in and getting your wrist band don't be shocked if someone asks you if you might attend the American Legion breakfast. If we can provide them an idea of what to expect, they can better staff to support it.

There will not be a food vendor at the dealership on Sunday morning. For whatever reason, Sunday morning was the most challenging time for Romney to get a food vendor on site. Fortunately, the American Legion is a great option.

Less than 2 weeks to go.

I did some route checking today.

Greenland Gap was in good shape. A few trees were showing some green buds. Road was in excellent shap, but did have a nice jolt of adrenaline when leaned over in a turn and hit some dirt on the road. A good reminder to never be complacent about dirt or gravel.

Dolly Sods also in great shape. I could find no snow up there at all. The place was packed with cars today.

If you haven't seen Dolly Sods consider taking a run up there if you are comfortable on a dirt/gravel road. Today the gravel was not too deep anywhere. That can change, but I've never seen that road in an overly challenging condition.

Sort of a silly question, does the event require tickets? My wife and I are going to ride out there Friday after we drop the wee one off with the babysitter, but because the baby sitter can't take him until around 5pm we won't actually make it to the event until Saturday morning.

Teekits? We don't need no steenking teekits. Other than making sure to sign in and get a wrist band (for liability and free Saturday dinner), we require you to come and have a positive attitude. There will be two fire pits in the evening with lots of good company and talk.

The American Legion SUNDAY (only) breakfast is off-site, in the center of town next to the Sheetz gas station. Other meals will have food available at the dealership.

Romney Cycles sells a lot of utility trailers and while they are moving them into a smaller area, be aware that the things are there and the dealership will be selling them to the locals while we are having our fun. Again, we want to keep anything other than motorcycles off the grass. It's supposed to rain this Friday and again in the middle of next week so the grass may be soft. Part of the reason is because a lot of where we camp is not owned by Romney Cycle.

CAMPING TIP: Everybody goes for the nice looking grass field with the trees near the parking lot and fire circle. The ground is not bad for tenting and a lot of us have. Most of that grass belongs to the Potomac Center, which provides "residential assistance and support to both children and adults with intellectual / developmental disabilities." They and Romney Cycles have a great relationship and we are invited to use the field. The funny thing is that it's not the best because it's not the smoothest ground for tenting and at night the dealership has a big light they can't turn off.

So the in-tip is that there are TWO big areas of grass which are as smooth as a suburban lawn. The one people have found is to the north and far end from the fire pit, which you pass as you just get to the big parking lot. The second which only a few people found is on the far (east) side of the building. It has a number of pine trees, the ground is smooth, and there are no big security lights.

I camped there Friday night to ride the area on Saturday. Short version is that the asphalt roads are in excellent shape and the recent rains have swept off a lot of the typical sand in the corners. Squirrel Gap and some other gravel roads that I ran are open and it's last years' gravel, so they are very peaked along the middle and slick on the edges.

Be aware that it is turkey hunting season. The gravel roads have people coming the other way around those blind corners!

A few pics from Saturday for those coming to join us. Squirrel Gap is about 13 miles of this with some pretty views:

Lots of pretty views for those staying on pavement:

Typical WV roller coasters:

Some people don't make the corners and all those warnings we give you are for real!
