I have been corresponding with Nick at Stoltec and am really impressed with his knowledge and willingness to work with us on this shock and also on his upcoming fork kit. He agrees with my thoughts on what we are looking for as far as imrovements in suspension. I am eagerly awaiting the new shock and have already have told him that I will also be investing in his fork kit. He hopes to have it ready about the end of June.

I second that.
I spoke to Nick a couple weeks ago when I ordered the rear shock. And I talked to him again last week about a fork rebuild and the possiblilty of ordering a second lighter spring for when I'm not 2-up and fully loaded. Nick knows his sh!t and he seems super-detail oriented (read: anal) about doing it right. Always a good thing in my book. ::008::
Can't wait to get the new rear shock on the bike. avc8130 keeps raving about his. ::017::

Oh, you guys need to hear more raving?

Took the bike out with the wife on back today. I didnt adjust preload because it was just a short jaunt. The bike was under control! Damping in the rear was composed. If I spent the extra 2 minutes to adjust preload I am confident it would have handled just as well as solo.

We even did a few miles of dirt to check out a waterfall. The bike did great. I have never been in the dirt 2-up before, but it was effortless. We were doing ~35mph down the dirt/gravel road, weaving around pot holes.

The wife was much happier. She could tell the bike was working much better than when stock. On the way home I was cruising at a pace that would make most people happy solo.

If you are on the fence, jump in. The water's fine!

AVC,
Got the form and have filled it out, but am still on the fence as i have other bikes that I feel the need to spend $$$ on first.
I still have a few Buells, and have decided to get the EBR rotor for my 2009 1125. I also have a Buell rally (S2 gathering) in Arkansas to attend in June.
So it looks like I will be on the next wave of buyers. Multiple bikes have, at times, been a blessing. They also get expensive.
Thank You for posting up the link to the first page for me.

Bart,

That is too bad. I had some 1125s in the past. I decided I was tired of dumping money into them. With that said, I did have an 1125CR with 15k miles on the stator with just the "harness" installed. When that bike was ridden the way it was intended (hauling ass on backroads) it behaved 100% for me.

I'd buy the Penske ;D. There is no "next wave" scheduled as of now. Once this window "closes", Penske projects lead times to be longer. (You can email Nick to see what they are projecting, I know he was adamant that we were getting a "special production" to meet the schedule).

If you want a shock for this summer (and you do!), just buy now. The only thing you will gain by waiting is paying more and enjoying it on your bike for less miles.

the window closes the end of the month, right? I just can't do it.
I remember your 1125R, that blue and white combination is stunning. I've painted my S2's frame and wheels toyota stadium blue to offset the white bodywork. Looks sweet now.
I went through 3 stators on the CR, all replaced under warranty. the bike is great in the curves, and I couldn't imagine sport riding on anything else.
The tenere is a great multi purpose bike, but even with suspension mods, it is still not a sport bike. I've already spent over $2500 in upgrades on the ST since I bought it.
With 8 bikes in the garage, it's hard to spread the wealth evenly...

Yeah, 5/31.

Yup, that was my 1125R. I'm not sure why your CR is munching stators like that. I really didn't have the issue once the harness was installed. I wasn't easy on it either. I commuted and toured on that bike more than anything else. I'm surprised you are willing to dump money into it with that track record. You would be hard-pressed to get $5k for it, the only REAL stator fix is almost 20% of that!

I dunno...with the suspension mods on this bike I can ride at least as fast on the street as I could with my 1125. The 7" of suspension travel just soaks up everything and the ride is super confident. I am generally able to sustain speeds on NJ backroads that will easily have me in the back seat of a state trooper crown vic. I actually find it relaxing to ride the S10 this fast, whereas the Buells actually required work and attention.

In fact, just this evening I had the wife on the back of the Tenere. We were approaching corners marked with yellow signs "30mph" and I wasn't the least bit concerned approaching at 70mph. Some trail braking to reduce trail and set corner speed, hit my turn in point, dive for the apex, rip the throttle open. Full confidence, sport riding, 2-up. Stupid. This bike is stupid good.

Solo? Forget about it. I have Buell guys I ride with sweating from working so hard on the twisties. NONE have ever been bored riding behind me on the S10.

In fact, I was riding with a buddy on a Speed Triple this past weekend. We were in the Catskills rocking down a ~35mph back road. The road was total crap. The pavement was terrible. There were holes, snakes, channels. It was an atrocity. I was leading, barely working, totally calm and just being "smooth". He was following. We had the Cardo Scalas going. At one point, we realized we had completely lost the other 4 people we were riding with (a 2nd S3, a 2nd S10, a VStrom and a Multistrada 1200). We were rocking VERY FAST down a total crap road. WE WERE HAVING A CASUAL CONVERSATION THE WHOLE TIME. BTW: we both have setups from Stoltec.

8 bikes?!?! That sounds more like a burden than a blessing. After a while the recurring carrying costs, as well as maintenance time would just take too much real MOTORCYCLING time away for me. "Spreading the wealth" would require A LOT of wealth!

Fred/Digital,

I am glad you guys have had the opportunity to correspond with Nick. He really is a top-shelf guy. No BS. No crap. Just a motorcyclist helping other motorcyclists realize just how GREAT their bikes can be.

THAT is what this group buy is all about. Sure, the "percentage" may not be "amazing", but let's be realistic. Both of you probably spent an hour of Nick's time BEFORE you even gave him $1. Try to find that from some "Walmart" of suspension.

No one is getting rich off motorcycle suspension, but a lot of people sure will be AMAZED with their "new bikes".

If you are on the fence, get the ball rolling. Send in your Order Forms. If you have any questions/concerns with regards to spring rate, luggage weight, etc just put them in the "Comments" section. Remember, this is a CUSTOM shock.

AC,
I'm a gearhead, never married, no kids. All my kids have two wheels. ;)
I just hosted a ride in the Arizona mountains two weeks ago, on my Tenere. There was a Connie1400, 3 1125's, a KTM 1190, a Gsxr1000, and a Hardley. I had no problems spanking them all as I know the road very well. (Devils HWY666), I've hosted this ride for 7 years now. I've learned the limits of the bike, and have adapted. the mods I've done so far help, more will help for sure.
I grow attached to some of my bikes, as the years go by. I hate Hardley Ableson with a passion, but still hang onto my 1945 WLA. My 1995 Buell S2 is outdated, but I still feel it's one of the best looking bikes ever built. (by hand, no less) Only 1400 were built, they are classics. My ST1300 is a very comfortable Sport tourer, but doesn't go offroad very far. My Triumph T120 is a real pain to kick start, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It's all part of a bikes personality. All my bikes serve a purpose, to me. It doesn't bother me that my CR is only worth $5000, if that. It does, what I want it to do, and does it well. the stator upgrade is only $250 from EBR. I have no problem installing it myself. I prefer it that way. I cringe at the thought of someone else working on one of my "kids".
I will upgrade the suspension on my Tenere one of these days. At the moment, it is low priority due to other commitments. It sucks this is appears to be a one time deal, I will go with ohlins if need be. either way, I'll get it done when the time comes.
It's great that you've done the legwork for this group buy. Penske's are great shocks, I have one on my S2, and it truly is a night and day difference.
Your work is much appreciated!

I think the price is the only one time part of it. I'm sure that you can still get the Penske after the group buy is over.

Bart,

Have no fear, it's not a "one time deal". If you miss out on the group buy, there will still be Penske's for Teneres in the future.

This is just the best chance to get one for this riding season at a reduced price.

I hear ya. I WILL eventually add a hack to the stable. The Speed Triple does double duty as the wife's toy and my sport bike. The CRF450X covers my needs for REAL dirt and general stupidity. For some reason I still feel the urge to try a weird 3-wheeled thing. I think I just want the excuse to bring my pooch along.

Keep up the good work on the Buells. There will also be a soft spot in my heart for the 1125. Not a very big one, probably more like a clogged artery, but there nonetheless.
