Clutch basket is a personal preference. I agree, you don't have to address it as a hazard.

The cct?
I still think the math is in your favor. Most Teneres probably have nothing to fear.
But, the high mileage Teneres.....the ones that get used, the math appears to shift away from fail proof. And the price for a failure is catastrophic. So why not address this? Cct or mcct, both are cheap insurance. I don't see the controversy.

Ron,
I've lined up on "K". Did you do the same, I don't have my manual in my hands this second. I had thought they suggested it, but tonight I might be compleatly wrong.

Well I changed my cct to the Graves yesterday and did it just like Mark R. did. Before I put the cover back on I rotated the motor some and the chain got loose so I adjusted it some more put the cover back on and all was good.

Had this APE Manual CCT fitted to the Super Tenere today: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251582876261?item=251582876261

APE do two versions, this is the PRO version that has a finer pitch thread to make fine adjustment easier and it comes with a gasket so you don't need to source that separately.

The bike has done 28k miles now and I noticed cam chain noise a couple of times at startup, fortunately I had already got the manual CCT a month or two ago ready for when it needed it.

Well count me in the F$%K, my timing jumped crowd. I found TDC (the wrong one apparently) and when I released the ACCT fully I heard the exhaust cam jump. Turns out it jumped like 10 teeth! Damn stupid design in there. I had to take out both cams, mark the inside of the gear so I could see the damn marks, then reinstall everything.

If I had to do it over, I would take off the clutch cover then wedge something big and strong behind the cam chain guide so that when I removed the tensioner, it couldn't move. Then, new CCT in as quick as possible and all is well.

This motor is great, but the frame designer and motor guys didn't talk to each other. It's laid out in a truly ignorant way. Like, "drop the engine to check the valves" ignorant...

I'm not a Machanic by any means. But I found changing the CCT verry easy. Taking off the clutch cover is a must and what I did was make up a jack bolt to keep the guid in place.

I heard my chain rattle on start up for the second time since I've had it. First time was a few months ago. My bike has 17,046 miles on it.
I have planned on going to the Horizons Unlimited gathering in North Carolina next week. It's about 750 miles from home.
Total trip mileage should be about 2,000 -2,300 miles.
I think I'll be ok from what I've read in here
Will change it with a mcct when I get back.
Good reason to meet Tony in Longview!

So little bits of issues have developed over the life of this model since 2010.
CCT (replace with Manual one).
Rad fan.
Spokes (Nothing to do but check).
Rims (bend or crack easy). Make them thicker. ::)
Clutch basket but as stated personal (but Yamaha did release a totally different design that works).
Dead or extreme high Idle (Not figured out as of yet).
Hard start (WAT).
Am I missing anything?
So the CCT to me has been the big one, R-1 and R-6 guys dealing with the same.
No Remedy by Yamaha other than revamp the CCT that seems to be the same, mine was bad out of the box.
All have been dealt with other than the Idle issue.

One day later, I heard the cam chain rattle again.
It rattles for less than a second.
Now I'm having second thoughts about taking the trip. Should I cancel?
Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

I think the general consensus on the forum is that these bikes rattle on start up for 3-4 seconds, by then the oil pressure has built up and all is good, should it last longer than that and have a stutter then I would take it in to the dealer. But for the 1 second on start up, I believe you are safe, especially as you have low miles. Of course there are exceptions to all things.

I don't have a manual yet. I believe I could get'r done but really like having a manual whenever i do a first time thing.
I think I'll be OK until I get back. I have another bike to ride but the Tenere is SO much more comfortable!

Good idea though and I still have until next wed to get it done if I decide to.

Hi itlives. I know this would be a royal pain in the a*** BUT if you have time to document your MCCT fitting Id really appreciate it. Will almost certainly be doing mine soonish and I've never done one before so any tips/advice would be greatly received. The thing that worries me most is how to set it correctly ie not too tight.

Obviously no issue or problem with it lives doing so, but there are several threads in which people already describe installation and adjustment. The crude summary is to not let the chain go slack so it doesn't slip on the cam gears, lightly snug the MCT on the chain, and when re-assembled start the engine then tighten and back off to when you hear a whir, not a clatter, if lightly blipping the throttle.

I searched for a thread with pictures but couldn't find one. When I do it, I will make a thread with pictures - start to finish .
The service manager at the local dealer said he could do it w/o taking the clutch cover off. I don't doubt him but would rather see what I'm doing and why.
The threads I have read would obviously be more helpful to me if I had a shop manual.

We've had people simply replace the tensioner, but we've also had a couple of members who had the cam chain slip on the gears. Removing the clutch cover is very easy and allows you to put something behind the chain guide to keep some tension on the chain.

I ordered a digital manual. (first time). II prefer paper manuals but don't have the funds right now.

I'll probably get the APE mcct (less than the Graves and more than the Chinese ).

Does this engine have a gasket under the clutch cover?

On your way to everywhere, , Iowa
I have a MCCT in for the last 20,000 or close to it.
While on a trip to Alaska I started hearing the chain rattle a little when costing down hill.
I snugged it up just a little and it has been good now for the last 9,000 miles.
It doesn't take much adjustment to get rid of a slight rattle, and it last a long time.
