To replace the timing case is a big job, I’m waiting on a new one to show up. I have to pull the cam to replace it. Then put it all back together.
Those old Cummins Dodges are good trucks. there are a lot around here Still going that are late 80's and early 90's models. The people I know that have them are having a terrible time finding parts to fix them. Are you having those kids of issues? From what i have learned those early Cummins Dodge trucks were very similar to AMC of old. they used all kinds of different external parts on the same year truck. I have a 2002 Dodge and it is a mix match of parts. You have to be pay attention getting parts for my truck. At least i can still get them as of now. Good luck with the repairs!

One of my gear head shows did an episode on the "million mile" club. There were several of the "second generation" Dodge oil burners that were in the 900K miles, and one was over the 1 million mark. All of the owners attributed regular maintenance as the key.

I’m just going through it and making it start, stop, and fix many, small issues. It has a small amount of rust, but not too bad. I’m going to turn up the pump a bit, advance the timing 4 degrees, and see how it runs. Stock it is supposed to be 215hp. With a few simple tweaks should get it into the 500 hp range and 1200 ft lb of torque. So I’m told. Much more supposedly available if you spend the money.

I’m gonna use it to pull a mini hoe. Tractor and my horses

looks good ... what's the wood dowels doing on the head ? looks like a " macgyver " solution to a potential problem . I love that thinking .

on my personal dirt bike injury recovery report . I'm almost back to normal , may start some easy trail rides in a few weeks . as is not missing much as the weather here has not been great for the weekends . this morning its 28 to start the day ,might hit 65 by the afternoon.
on a different and sadder note . one of my good friends told me yesterday that he has cancer of the kidney . found a large cancerous mass on one kidney ,surgery is scheduled for march 2nd. because of me he bought a KTM 300 TPI and has become a maniac on the trails . he is in his early 50's and a family man ,all around good guy.... so he has a battle ahead of him and I ask for thoughts and prayers for Chris .... he is always pushing this old man to ride harder. its kinda strange that all my close friends bought dirt bikes so we could ride dirt and almost all of us has stopped riding our street bikes . my friend mike has ridden his Tenere once in the last year(almost two ) .Chris who has a 1290r has not ridden it since he bought the 300 . I ride mine about one day a week ... trees and cows and my on stupidity is what I face on the trails , not SUV's and Peterbilts .... not a close friend but a rider I know last week t boned a car that turned left across his path.... he went over the hood , nothing broken, bumps and bruise for sure . his girl friend slammed into the car , starflighted to Austin hospital .... multiple broken bones and surgeries . absolutely no reason for the crash except the car driver was a (what words can one express to describe this level of not caring enough about anyone or anything else but themselves ) complete fool.
every summer I try to do a long bike trip , this summer im taking my mustang on a road trip from Buda Tx (next to Austin TX ) to Seattle Wa.
wife and I are over do a vacation together . I hope you guys are having a great week ..... P.S I will do a fall trip some where im thinking .

Its good to hear that you are on the mend, and almost back to riding. It has been cold and dry here- no fresh snow to ride snowmobiles, and too cold to ride motorcycles. My work schedule has changed, and I am currently working six days a week. UGH. Working on the Cummins in my off time.

The wood dowels is a way to hold the cam followers up while you pull out the cam. Otherwise they fall into the oil pan. It works well. Got the engine all back together, it runs... but chasing an air leak somewhere in the lines- I had to remove them to take the lift pump out ( it too rides on the cam) to get the camshaft out. Now I have an air leak and the fuel leaks down and makes it hard to start (looses prime).

i figured the dowels were to keep something in place ... its the little things that drive you crazy.... rode the Tenere yesterday for about 30 minutes ,back felt fine for street riding . saying this next Saturday will be cold (50 for a high ) so will probably stay off the Beta for aa few more weeks . but if dry may gear up and layer up for a few hours on the Tenere. we will see.

had breakfast with my friend Chris ... maybe in a private moment he wavers , but nothing but positive attitude about this battle with cancer that he faces. not sure I would handle this as well as he.
never had a symptom does not feel bad , that's the evil of cancer . it can be there feeding on you , hiding , becoming a full grown monster before you know you're in trouble.... he had to pee , painted his toilet bright red , off to the emergency room. he is 51.

still a little sore from the whiskey throttle dirt bike dirt nap .... rode the big bike around the parking lot of the church about 20 laps , back felt ok . now if I drop it ,its just going to have to stay there. but will only ride if everything is dry . we got some more winter coming Wednesday with cold and rain . and a chance for frozen precipitation on Friday .... so if not tomorrow then it will be next week ... I'm fairly sore now as I had to sling some chains to secure a load of steel plates for a job .... 8' X 20' X .50 " plus two smaller plates on top of that. then when I get home today did some volunteer work for the city by repairing a street sign . but slowly getting better I hope.
