The S10 does have a slight bit of abruptness with its low-speed fueling - on initial throttle it may seem to lag a bit, so you give it more throttle, then it comes on a little too strongly. In T mode, everything is more muted, so it is less noticeable. There are various suggestions for fixes on this very forum, all the way from tweaking of the TB sync bleed screws, to adding a PCV, even having your ECU sent out to be reflashed. It's probably an artifact of what Yamaha had to do with the fueling and throttle maps to pass emissions.

The MCN test complained a bit about what I think is the same thing, saying that there was some variability in the response of the engine, sometimes seeming sluggish and other times not.

I don't think it is much of an issue and most bikes, even some carb'ed ones but especially the injected ones with "fly by wire" throttles, tend to have slight hiccups in their fueling like this. Honestly, I think we've become so accustomed to almost perfect fueling in current technology engines, even the slightest flaw stands out. It's not something I find a problem or even noticeable in everyday riding, but so far I've done almost no highly technical riding where I'm picking my way through tough terrain. Perhaps I'm too tolerant. In the unlikely event it did bother you, I would expect you could get it tuned out, although this might involve doing aftermarket mods at some expense.

Mostly, it's a damn fine-running engine. A little lumpy at times and with a bit of a gravelly texture - if you love multi-cyls and are not fond of twins, it might seem a little too agricultural - but it is a very friendly engine with good power across a very wide spread of engine speeds.

I ride the S10 everyday. All weather. No matter what.

It IS my first "fuely", so I can tell it is very different than all my carb bikes. And although I LOVE the throttle on a nicely carbed bike, it takes GREAT PAIN to get them that way. The 06 SM950 is perfectly carbed now and is much more "fluid?" than the S10. But again, it took a lot of effort to get it that way. (AND, because it is carbs, it comes with all the pains of carbs..elevation changes....the sin of not riding it enough and then letting the carbs gum up.....etc)

I said all that to say this: Maybe they aren't thrilled with the fueling on the stock S10. And maybe even their remarks are valid. But maybe you are reading too much into it. :)

It obviously is FAR from a deal maker\breaker for those of us who make up this forum. We are the ones that bought the S10 anyways!
Yep!

+1 on that. My recent bikes (last 10 years) were an SV and a Multistrada, so I get twins. Agricultural is so apt for the Multistrada. The Yamaha has the nice twins charateritics without the heavy mechanicals of the Ducati. Character with dependability and affordable maintenance cycles.

Tiny Hijack moment. Excuse please.

Combo, was that you on Sunday, around noon, heading west on 6 past Joes BBQ?

If not, someone else has an S10 with OEM luggage passing through Alvin.

I know we haven't met, but having 2 or 3 ST's just a few miles apart in rural Texas is surprising.

(watch the dovetail back to the thread.....)

The fly by wire fueling complaint doesn't seem to be an issue down here at about 19' above sea level. ;D
ST's are poplin up everywhere.

The article and video were both good. Finally the motorcycle media is coming around to what we already know and love about our tenere's.
I still find it funny; when I spoke with a BMW salesperson about the GS, that almost 90% of GS owners never take the bikes off road. Maybe that's why it gets such a great rating!

I think this segment has the same problem as the cruiser segment.

Watch long way round, think they might like to do a bit of that, go to BMW dealer, buy bike, safe in the knowledge they have plenty of company, pose.

Same as it was for the fake pirates.

YAMAHA has to build a rep and get some bikes out there, and that's all they can do, unless they can get a Ewen and Charlie to publicly ditch BMW in favor of the S10 or find another Star Wars character to run around with Nick Sanders and start a whole new series.

So if YAMAHA had just stayed in the market from 1996 onwards with the Tenere they probably would not have it as tough.

That was me. Believe it or not I was delivering a processed deer to my son-in-law in pearland. It all fit in my boxes. We need to hook up sometime since we are so close.

I can't stop laughing at that photo.

Your fault!

This can't compare to Cycle Worlds Review at all. ::025::

Saw this the other day. Love the footage of the S10. Ordered the Yammie luggage (20% off woo hoo!) Saturday when I picked up the bike and that video inspired my confidence regarding the fittment. Looked pretty stable, no floppy, floppy!

Seriously, I have never before had an issue not delivered. Ironically, the 1st in a long time I was intensely looking forward to.....WTF!!!!

Can't find it in any of the local stores either..... :'(

I guess I better just go ride the Tenere'.... ::025::

Was so impressed to see this bike finally get a fair shake from people who actually know what they're doing off road that I bought both the online version and a hard copy when i hit the stands a few days ago.

Clearly your post office has an employee considering a Super Tenere and he is thumbing through your mag daily during his considerable break time. I hadn't received mine and was sure I'd let my subscription lapse effective Jan 2012. Then, voila, it showed up in the mailbox and the new subscription termination date showed Jan 2013 on it. Yesterday, I got a bill for the renewal. Weird since I always send a check in with the renewal and didn't recall renewing.

So, I think CW renewed me knowing I'd been a subscriber for as long as I can remember. The irony is that I had allowed the thing to lapse precisely because CW had not followed up on the November 2010 "first ride" article on the Super Tenere. I mailed my check to CW today.

Cycle World is notorious for auto-renewing subscriptions without permission, typically at higher rates than can get if you re-subscribe on your own. They've done it twice on me, and I've dropped my subscription for this reason (although I still read it through other channels). If you contact them and complain they will typically give you six-months for free, but what a PITA.

Mailing dates are also all over the map - I've gotten mine +/- a week different than others - but this may be more or less universal with all magazines.

I tried to find an on line version. Have you got a linky. The dead tree version is not showing up anywhere I have tried.
