Just picked a copy today and enjoyed the read.

Did anybody else notice the MPG figures? High 36 low 23. This seems a fair amount lower than what I'm reading in the fuel consumption thread. Is this more in line with what one might experience while flogging it all of the time?

They start chewing gas when the throttle is at 95% 95% of the time. From what I have read I expect it starts chewing over 140Km/h, then it starts getting Ducati consumption.

Subscribe to all the cheap MC Mags,etc you can. They all read just the same when your are older and have other things to do besides read about the same bike three or four different ways.

However, You can do a lot of good with these Magazines. I send a USPS box of magazines (Car, Gun, National Geographic, Esquire, MC mags, RollingStone, Fortune, Wired and a bunch of photography mags. Note no pron) to Afghanistan every 2-3 weeks.

Currently at the base where my friend's son, a Canadian Captain (FOO and FAC qualified) is serving, there is the usual assortment of Yanks , Brits, Aussies and Canucks. The magazines are a big hit. My friend's son says that word gets around pretty fast when the new box of magazines arrives

Those of you who live near a VA hospital can drop them off anytime. There are much appreciated by the soldiers.

Great Idea! I will pass it along to my father who inherits my magazines on the firs round since he visits the VA on occasion.

As for the test, it was on par with the other reviews I have read. It seems that the bikes are so competitive riding style, personal preference, acceptable reliability/maintenance, and cash flow will point riders in every direction. Many of the articles are contradictory as to which is better on/off road. That tells me all have great capabilities. With the arrival of the Tiger Explorer the ADV market is alive with choices! ::015::

All three bikes were low, so I would assume the were pushing them super hard. 23 mpg is more/less track day mileage.

I haven't seen the test yet - but yes they must have been pushing them very hard. You'd think they would ad that caveat when talking about fuel consumption? Or maybe they are more used to testing sport bikes, where pushing hard is the default?

I thing most of us who are "average" riders for this bike are getting over 40 average with highs close to 50 - so very different to the Cycle World result.

Based on the posts here and on advrider, I'd judge the "average" street mileage over the whole fleet is about 42 which is about what I have gotten in 6K miles. I think CW's overall average was 32 for the S10, so it is not totally out of line to get 10 mpg less then average in a magazine test where the bike is being dyno'ed, top speed runs, off-road, perhaps run at the track, very experienced riders riding competitively in a group, etc. although typically the magazine test penalty is more like 5.

I've owned all three of the bikes tested in the Cycle World comparo and I agree completely with the results although I got significantly better mileage with each bike.
KTM 990 Adventure ... great dirt bike with a sweet engine and a really good sport tourer. Maintenance? Forget about it! Three hours to do a simple oil change?
BMW GS1200 ... the new twin cam engine is fast! This is the best sport tourer in BMW's line up but my very expensive vario sidecases started to disintegrate just from freeway cruising.
Yamaha Super Tenere ... a solid, comfortable bike that hides it's extra weight and an engine that has tons of character. A couple minor suspension setting changes and the handling was transformed into sport bike territory.

??? Wow, that guy is amazing.

Like was mentioned earlier, these reviewers know dirt, so it really is interesting how the S10 bubbled to the top for those guys, that says a LOT about it.

Same issue, South Africa touring article. Not picking on brands here but on page 43 middle of the page "we find Nabell from Kuwait sitting on the grassbank. He hit a deep washout and broke the borrowed R1200GS's swingarm in two. No one has ever seen that happen before" Well I have see more than a few pictures of BMW owners with broken-in-half swingarms and there are lots of posts about it.

Rock solid that Tenere is. Happier by the day with my choice ::022::

That only happens in ten or so units a year. It just happened, by chance, to occur on the review bike. Very rare indeed you know. ::)
