I bought a pair of Alpinestar Tech 7's today. They seem pretty beefy but I broke my foot really bad in motor school about a year ago (four broken bones, one crushed) and really want to protect my feet and ankles.

The kid at Cycle Gear told me to stand in warm water up to the ankle while wearing the boots to break them in. He said to rock back and forth while standing in the warm watter. Since this is similar to how many soccer players break in their leather cleats I thought it seemed reasonable.

Before I take the plunge, literally, anyone else have any suggestions?
Not too sure about that fill them up (intentionally) with water thing but I do know that CG hires some questionable fellows. What you got there with those Tech 7s, Officer, are mid grade MX boots with excellent protection but I wouldn't want to walk a mile or more in them no matter how you broke them in! Prolly not water tight but they could shed alot of water before getting to your socks.

I have been using 11yr old Alpinestar Road boots (GoreTex liner) and for a simple, no-frills boot it does pretty well and are water tight. Looking to upgrade this year to the Sidi Adventure for the added protection and they are waterproof.

Thanks for all the replies. I will probably plunge in them next weekend when I can spend some time walking around the yard to break them in. I am just leary of completely soaking the inside foam and having it mold or get funky. With as dry as AZ air is, it probably won't be a problem.

If these boots are gore tex they should be guaranteed for life not to leak.
My mistake - I just checked, and the liner is Gaerne Drytech. It worked great, but after a while it just wore out. I have been using a pair of Tourmaster boot raincovers, and they do a great job in keeping the boots dry, even when riding for extended periods in very heavy rain.

I've been wearing the Alpinestar Scouts. Water stays out, heat stays in. Cheaper than some and seem to do a good job(like the Tenere). Ocassionaly the buckles give me some trouble, but overall good. If just riding around town I have some Sidi Rain boots. I wear those Scouts anytime I plan on exploring the dirt roads.

I have a pair of Triumph Expedition boots with over 90k miles on them. I got them in '05 or '06 on clearance. One of the best $50 US I ever spent on any riding gear. Unfortunately, they are not made anymore and I will need to replace them soon. So this thread is very timely for me. They still keep most of the rain out. Only time they leak, is with some extended wet weather riding (100 miles or more in pouring rain).

I've got these as well and hate to see them go. I actually took my Dremel tool and "re'' treaded the soles so I could wear them a bit longer.

Time to ask more questions... I always answer peoples questions, now I need to ask a few.. :)

I got some Gaerne G-Adventure boots last year.. They are probably a good typical ADV boot. For me this is not cutting it. I sometimes stand on the pegs for 1-2-3-4-5 hours and these boots start to kill my feet. As they get broken in they have become a bit to flexy for me and feel I just don't have enough support if I took a good tumble. I would like to get the SIDI adventure boots but dont want to lay down 400-500 bucks. Ive done tons of reading on them, Etc.. These 'seem' to be a good sturdy ADV boot that you can walk in..... I don't walk in mine, except across the street to eat, or into the store to pay for gas.. So the all day walking feature I don't really care about per-se.
I came across and started doing home work on the Gaerne SG10 motocross boots. EVERYWHERE I read they get RAVING reviews on comfort and support. Ive even contacted a few forum members on several forums to pick there brain. This sounds like what im looking for. I can also get them for about 300. More protection, better comfort, for a good bit less money.
I guess my real question is, for people that own these boots, is this just way over kill for an ADV bike ? I want to stand on the pegs all day and I think I have to have a metal shank in the bottom of the boot to have the comfort I want. My friends and I with Teneres find some real 'fun' off road and I wouldn't mind the extra protection of this type boot. Im really leaning toward this boot. Can ya talk me out of it ? ::024::

I'd be careful what I wish for, Jaxon, when it comes to metal-shank boots... don't ask me how I know. ::025::

If the shank is properly constructed, etc. I think they're fine, and my Gaerne Oiled Balance boots may very well have 'em for all I know. Just know that metal-shanks have been known to tear through to the inside of the boot in certain crashes and cause their own problems...

Like trying to figure how to get your foot out of the boot! :D

Thanks D

I think the Oiled boots are probably the very best overall boot if I was not standing up so much and for so long.. The oiled boot has no metal in the bottom and they are similar to the rigidity of my gaerne G-adventures. If I road the bike like most 'normal' riders and sit my butt down, they would probably be the best choice for me.. If a roll my little wimpy ankle in those though I don't think that boot would offer me any support. Ive read many reviews on many sites about the SG10 and 99.9% give that boot an A++.. Everyone is different, and everyone has different wants and needs. All these boots are to expensive to try them all and make the very best choice. After getting the g-adventure, I now know that I need a much stiffer sole, and this is important to me, not so much the ability to walk around all day in them..

Hey, I understand... Back before I got so... uh... well fed... Yeah, that's it. Well fed... I stood on the pegs a lot more than I do now, but fortunately I crash a lot less than I used to, so I guess it balances out. ::025::

I'm not trying to sell ya' on the Oiled Balance boots. I know they're basically trials boots and probably don't offer the protection you're looking for. No, I was trying to warn you about the mostly unmentioned problem with metal-shank boots. The boot manufacturers are probably better at keeping the shanks where they should be these days, but way, way "back in the day" that wasn't the case. I saw a lot of metal shanks tear through into the inside of the boot and do varying amounts of damage to folks' feet.

I was even the victim myself, though I was lucky enough to come away with only some really bad bruising, swelling, and a minor flesh wound. The hard part was the crash bent the shank (and here up until that time I thought they made those out of only spring steel to avoid bending), and there was no way to get my foot out of the boot! ???

Needless to say, with some *surgery* to the boot my foot was freed, but I have looked a bit less fondly on metal-shank motorcycle boots since. ;)

Just FYI...
