1000 km in a day on a 800 triple with loaded panniers will be a very very long day. 1000km in a day on the xt1200 is a walk in the park!!!!
Big bikes = big miles. I will use the 800 for day trips only
Depends a bit how big you are. I've spent some time on a buddy's 800XC. At 6'-4" and 245lbs it felt like a 9/10ths scale bike to me. Other than that, I thought it was pretty amazing.

I did 1000 miles/day on my 800 GS fairly often. What I found made the biggest difference between it and the S10 is the fuel tank size, chain maintenance, and ultimately, reliability. The ergonomics on the GS were great after a few tweaks. I'm 6'3" and 220. XT800Z should hopefully be more nimble offroad, but if it has a chain I'd be a lot less interested.

now they are getting smart, but I think it will cut into the sales of the 1200 for sure. I ride one up all the time, and the 900 triple would be my perfect choice. I really hope they make this bike, as I am certainly on the buy list.
No use in getting your hopes up. The U.S. never gets the 'good' bikes. O0

If Yammie makes something more off-road worthy than the present competition (not hard to do), they might just have something. Better reliability should be a foregone conclusion.

Out of all the people who will clamor for the new 800, I wonder how many will truly make use of it off road. Yamaha should tear a page frow BMW's playbook by offering a version with reduced seat height. I wonder if they will put a shaft drive on this one.

Forget the unsprung weight, does an adventure bike really need USD forks
Um no. You can ride an old Harley if you like out there..It's the reliability that worries me not the weird suspension.

But the USD forks are better all round, Except for that pesky dirt stuff getting into them. Would be cheaper than a telelever setup to think about protecting them a bit better I would have thought.
