Looks like those of you hoping for a lighter, more offroad oriented Tenere will have your wish come true. My dealer told me that Yamaha will be releasing an 800cc Tenere triple to take on the F800GS and Triumph Tiger 800XC. ::008::

Wow......this could be interesting to say the least. I still want the 660 here in the USA though.

now they are getting smart, but I think it will cut into the sales of the 1200 for sure. I ride one up all the time, and the 900 triple would be my perfect choice. I really hope they make this bike, as I am certainly on the buy list.

Mine told me the same thing, after a Yama EU meeting.
I wish for a website where we could write our opinions on how the bike should be.
Can't wait to try this triple...

Re: XT800Z POSSIBLE DAKAR CANDIDATE????

Well I don't know about you guys but having owned my Tenere for three years .... yes it really is three years since I bought mine. I now know that a lighter slightly less powerful bike would suffice. In fact it would be so much better for off road shenanigans . I was seriously considering getting a Tiger 800 or the BMW variant.

Now I hear that Cyril Despres (the multiple DAKAR winner) has just signed up with Yamaha ..... so what does that suggest. I think we need to know a lot more about that now don't we? that'll be Yamaha back to their competitive routes. ::008::

I would certainly be interested in seeing and riding one.
Think it will be based on the most recent triple Yamaha just released?
Unfortunately, those lucky Europeans will get it first...
:-(

And even if the Euros do get it first, we may never get it here in the USA at all... :(

I fill out the survey on the Yamaha Europe site from time to time (since there is no input spot on the USA one) and the recent one I did was about the 800 triple engine and what I would be interested in. I asked for what you're referring to.
As others have stated, I find the ST a bit on the heavy/bulky side for truly rough off road going. It will do it, but I'm not interested. Some areas that I ride, my WR is too heavy. I would be very interested in an Aluminum framed, 6 gal fuel capacity 400 lb 850cc triple Tenere with a setup that would allow fitting a real bash plate. After whacking my ST with a rock, I no longer do rock gardens. An under-engine subframe, even as an option, would be appreciated.
Since the ADV bikes in general, and small to mid sized displacements seem to be the trend, we may see all sorts of neat things. Once upon a time, no one started with a 600 sport bike as a beginner bike. It's nice to see less is more back in fashion.

I would be very interested in one too. But for me, it would not be an either\or situation.

Instead, the Big Beast would stay as my ultimate 2-up rig. It's just more bike and better equipped to be a cross country (continent) pac mule.

But for solo? Daily commuting and making a run to Big Bend? Oh my.

However. They gotta get it better than Triumph got the XC. While I LOVE the 21" front wheel (genius), it seems silly to match that up with tarmac only suspension travel. What is it, 5"? WTH? That's a deal killer for me on the XC. Everything else about that bike can be addressed to be a serious off-road beast. Would rather have a drive shaft, but with sprockets, you can at least fix the "pretender" 1st gear ratio.

Yep. Yamaha, please take that triple and make a duplicate medium sized Super Tenere ADV. Big tank. Long suspension. Drive shaft, and 100lbs lighter. Freaking dream bike.

I would have both Teneres. Even if it meant selling ALL my other bikes.

That means Yamaha will need a 450 machine for Dakar, so maybe we'll see a WR450R/X?

Edit: bah my hopes are dashed, it looks like he'll be riding a Yamaha 450 YZF Rally bike.

Well the Thread over at ADV already had someone asking for a jacked up FZ-09/MT 09.

But here is my wish. If they are going with the triple...

Please stroke the motor and give it more torque down low. I don't care about torque at 9000RPM. 80HP would be fine at 7000RPM. 900cc would be good.

Bring back the gaters as an option. It may not be cool but it's a good thing.

I don't want twitchy nervous steering. It's great on nice predictable surfaces BUT off road. No thanks. I want that weight back a bit and the steering "forgiving"

Cover the chain. Maybe it's retro but it works as well. Or go shaft.

Yeah I know the reality is that 90% of people buy the bike based on the test ride and don't know any different off road. They just think it's all about the weight and big front tires and spoked wheels. I suppose that is the reality. Go Pretender AND real versions please. Call one TDM and the other Tenere. A Tenere is not a pretender.

500km range option please. Make it a real Tenere. 30+L tank remember YAMAHA.

Please go 900. You have a head start on the spec sheet right there and a marketing head start to boot..
2012 Super Ténéré Adventure XT900Z Concept

So I hope they have the TDM and the "optioned up" Tenere in jacked up models.

I will wait and see. I may be looking in 2015. Maybe.

While the idea of an 800ish cc Tenere is appealing, today I was reminded of why I bought the 1200 Tenere. Ride with church group this morning, all large new Harley's and Victories, some real highway machines. Me on my Tenere. Mesa to Payson, which is from desert to pines. The Tenere had way more nuts than the big highway bikes, especially up hills. Cornering up and down 6 and 8 percent grades was a snap, even with the K60's. I was easily able to ride with the front of the group despite a pretty good cross wind too. My bike is bone stock except for protective equipment and tires i.e. no flash, clutch mod, nothing.

As we rode I kept looking off to the desert and mountain roads to the side, knowing I could have jumped off the highway at anytime and had a great adventure.

I think the 800 is a great choice and would be plenty sufficient, but the 1200 certainly is a special beast (as long as there's no mud).

Was the 900 a shaft or chain drive? That would be a good motorcycle. 8.7 gallon fuel tank = 350 miles easy and possibly 400 miles.

Gaters on USD's. Hm...
As i mentioned somewhere
-long travel suspension
- high ground clearance
- rally raid look
- high fender option
- Tc&ABS switchable on the fly
- No freakin' restrictions
- 21/18 wheels
- WTF
...i'am keeping my snowflake. They'll never going to make it right. :D

Damn straight. They need it more than the Right way up forks ::024::

Hey if they want to go DLC plating out of the box I'm not going to complain. I reckon gaters as an option would be cheaper though.

I can see big blue hanging around for a while though. Maybe with some DLC Ohlins fronts added and a purple springed shock. MAYBE.

As good as it may sound it's pretty nigh onto impossible to make fork boot/gaiters work on USD forks with disc brakes. Not only will the rotating discs simply rub right through the rubber fork boots, if a disc touches them when it's good and heated up from some hard braking it would just melt a hole in 'em.

Those are just a couple of reason why you don't see fork boot/gaiters on modern USD forks.

Just FYI...

Geez, all I hear is excuses. I want Gatters Damit! Melted or not :D

Just because all those old tech ones wouldn't cut it doesn't mean they can;t come up with some unobtainium ones.

You never used to see USD forks either..Get NASA onto it. They will come up with something. ::024::
