Why is the power restricted in gears 1,2,3 ?

With all the "power"mods on my bike and now the Diapason flash, I am really happy to have TCS and ABS on the bike when driving in less than optimal paved roads and weather. Remember, it is a 261 kilograms heavy animal. Accellerating and slowing down all that thrusting energy on a twisty wet road is intimidating (now). And exectly as stated above, it is the immediate throttle response, the direct link between the throttle and the engine that makes the biggest character change. When you expect it to go it now just goes and goes, and with conviction! ::26:: ::26:: ::26:: ::001:: ::001:: ::001::

On your marks, get set, Go!!! ::26::

Woohoooooooooooo, I wish it was spring already! I want to ride my bicycle!

0-60 and quarter times are fairly meaningless unless you intend to do full bore drags starts all the time, as are peak dyno figues, they are used to split hairs these days.

The fact the tenere does 0-60 real quick does not help me when exiting the 50 hairpins on the Stelvio Pass two-up with luggage, unless I spin it up to the redline and slip the clutch o-60 style - which would either overload the TC's capability and send me highsiding 3,000metres back to the bottom, or burn out the clutch before I reached the top.

Having modified many bikes I know the Plecebo affect does not work with me, when I drop off my GS for servicing I get a shiny new model, I notice it is a shade smoother and revs up better, I also notice the suspsnsion is nowhere near as compliant as my Wilburs setup and the bike is slower steering, when picking my bike up I immediately notice it is less smooth and not so free revving, but turns better and soaks up bumps easier.

The low gear restrictions on my ZZR meant I often needed to change down 3-4 gears to overtake, after throwing the secondary flies in the bin I could often leave it in top whereas before I would need to drop 2 gears, if this was all in my mind I would have soon gone head on into an oncomng car whilst I imagined the overtake was going faster because the dyno showed a 40% increase in torque at 4k in 4th when in fact the dyno was lying to help line the tuners pockets.

Even mere mortals can notice these sorts of improvements, I think sometimes after a service you can get the placebo effect in thinking the bike is running nicer, when perhaps it is not, but even an extra 10% of power / torque is noticeable to most riders, we are looking at 30% plus here - and right where most owners actually use their bikes quite often, in the year I have had my GS I don't think I have done a 0-60 dash or a standing start quarter run, but I have lugged out of low speed bends at 2-5k in gears 1-3 thousands of times.

I did not find the S10 very quick, more on the slow side and particular from 0-100 km/h. It put me off buying one for two years, but when I heard about the restrictions everything made sense.

Have a look at this youtube vid, Yamaha XTZ 1200 Super Tenere MY 2010 Off Road On Board Tets
at the end he tests the performance of the bike and it looks more or less the way I felt when I test rode the S10.
You can discuss his skills, but compare the times he manages with the Tiger 800 and other bikes.

I don't know how Motorcycle Usa got their 0-60 times, but I would not be surprised if Yamaha have started sending out unrestricted bikes for reviews.

When I compare the accelleration from 0-185 with that of my bike, my bike is there way way quicker, it just flies through the rev's in each gear without holding back. It reaches 200 on the tacho before accelleration starts slowing down.

Hey Rasher, Mod away, I have no argument with you.

All I am saying is that the bike is not slow. I have ridden an oz spec bike with many other bikes on a ride day, and I agree it didn't "feel" like it was quick, but it was. So if you want it to feel that way, go ahead.

The only time I knew it was quick was when riding another bike after we all swapped, and thinking I was going quick, while the whole time an S10 was sitting on my ass, with the rider looking at the scenery. Then I realized that it wasn't everyone else taking it easy.

If YAMAHA USA are doing their job they will be making sure that the bike for review is in good condition and properly tuned,

The German mags tested the same thing. It's not a global YAMAHA conspiracy to provide specialized bikes to reviewers. It is actually fairly good to 60mph.

But as you said, that is not that important to you, so Mod away. It won't cost anymore than a fancy carbon fibre piece for a Ducati and will make much more difference.

That would be Rip69 who posted the video and speculated about non-restricted ECU's in test bikes...which I highly doubt is the case.

Sorry, it was not my intentions to offend anybody. I like the bike a lot, and have paid a small fortune for it and could write half a page of what I like about it.
I just found it strange that people had a complete different feel about the acceleration of the bike than what I had experienced. When I found that video, I thought it illustrated the point of what a restricted bike can perform and it looked more or less what I had experienced.

Anyway, I would recommend to check out the bike reviews this guy has made, it is the only place I have seen bikes being run flat out and timed with a gps v-box.

As Tremor38 already posted: on one of the German Forums an official complaint was sent to Yamaha Germany regarding the restriction (and some other complaints):

It is all in German ofcourse

http://xt1200z-forum.de/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=821&start=20#p7900

The official response from Yamaha was:

http://xt1200z-forum.de/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=821&start=20#p7901

The response from Yamaha is very simple: In order for the bike to adhere to regulations 95/1/EG the restrictions were required. And since Yamaha does not have any influence on these regulations, they ask for their understanding.

So, I trust this answers the initial question for which this topic was started.

And this also answers the question if Yamaha will ever lift the restrictions themselves... Only if the regulations will allow them to do so. So that means a simple: When hell freezes over.

There's my latest from Elisa. Maybe that will coax Spasm out of the woodwork. >:D Sounds like Sportrider's is still renting space in Italian Customs...how else could they charge a 27% duty. 8)

The Super Tenere is fine just like it is, plenty of power for me off or on road. I could have kept the Multi 12 if I wanted to dance with the radar detector installed all the time. I didn't.

On most all bike forums, you will have people that like to spend/waste money on mods that lift the HP a few percentage points. For me, no need. If I was interested in purchasing a used Super Tenere I would be after a STOCK bike, so you might keep that in mind if you ever plan on trying to sell your bike.

I will end my post here, and not take up half the page with nothing. Kids, what we gonna do with them?

The assessment that the engine management means in driving risk life and limb, we can not agree.
The XT1200 Ténéré is characteristic of the motor lodges So Gay, that the required policies shall be adhered to 95/1/EC.
Looks like they are saying that the Government is "So Gay" :D
