I have had my SuperTen in my possession since Dec 12, but thanks to the paperwork run-around from the DMV, I have not been able to get it registered yet - DOH!! But I got all the notarized forms from the seller in the mail today and plan a trek down to the DMV (50 miles roundtrip!) on Monday to get her legal to ride. As frustrating as it has been, we have had noting but cold and snowy weather here so the loss of riding my new-to-me SuperTen has not been as painful as it could have been had the weather been better.

But all this time with the SuperTen in hand and not riding has given me ample opportunity to start farkling. I got a pair of K60's from Jaxon, my Eastern Beaver harness is in the mail and I have everything ready to go for its arrival, and I have been working on tricking out the panniers. My SuperTen had factory side panniers on it from the previous owner. I have HT aluminum boxes on my KLR and at first blush the Yammy factory boxes seem cheap and plastic. However they are already mounted and good to go so I am gonna give them a try and see what happens. One thing that seemed to be missing from the factory cases was a solid means of lashing more gear to the tops of the boxes. So I ordered some of the rubberized box protectors from TechSpec and some black anodized footmans loops and then fabbed up a solution as pictured below.

The parts needed to do this mod are listed below.

$44.95 - http://techspec-usa.com/product_info.php?cPath=475_482&products_id=447&osCsid=3863151bfc2d2013bd83520836408a58

$ 8.21 - http://www.strapworks.com/Metal_Footman_Loop_p/mfl-b.htm

$ 8-10 - various stainless steel pan head screws, washers, and nylock nuts at Lowes

I have yet to try it out, but I think these will be a great addition to the SuperTen and it was fun to start the farkling process.
Nice work. As far as I know, you are to first person to do more than just talk about this. I shall follow directly in your footsteps, Sir! Just finished ordering the goods. 8)

Thanks. Seemed like a no brainer to me. For under $20 (if not using TechSpec grips) and under an hour to do the work – this mod should give a huge ROI.
Since you asked some questions via PM earlier that others might have, I have pasted those thoughts I sent back to you via PM below for all to see.

- I used the 1" Black Anodized Metal Footman Loops rather than the 1.5” versions

- If you attempt this mod, be sure to carefully visualize your footman hole locations so that you get as little interference from the ribs inside the lid. You cannot avoid them all but when needed, you can take a dremel tool and knock out just enough of a rib(s)to give clearance for the backside hardware.

- As for leakage... I "underdrilled" the holes in the topcase lid so that the stainless panhead screws were a tight fit and had to be manually threaded through the lid rather than just pushed loosely through the lid. My intention was to form a "mechanical barrier" to water. Then I ran a small bead of silicone caulk under the loop's foot that made contact with the lid. Once tightened down, I wiped off the excess caulk. Then on the inside of the lid where the panhead screw came through, put a good bead of silicone caulk below the washer that was then tightened down with a nylock nut. Once everything was finished, I thoroughly coated the screw, washer, and nylock nut with a gob of silicone caulk. It is gonna take some serious hydrostatic pressure to make the holes I made with this mod start to leak water. As loosely as the OEM sidecase lid actually fits, I would expect that joint to leak before my footman loop mod ever will.

Good luck with the mod. I am sure that you'll love it!

After having Jesse's on a GS and Givi's on a VStrom, I went with the Givi's. They just work for me and I really like their functionality. Topcase only when I'm commuting, I've only driven my truck to work 10 days since 1 Oct 12. ::003::

Trying to get a little dirt on the bike, arriving at camp in the Virginia Mountains....

Here are my Jesse's:

Racks: The install of the racks went easier that I anticipated. Each bolt seemed to line up great. The 8 x 50 mm bolt that attaches the main mount to the right front support bracket was way too long. I switched it to the other side of the bike, where the main mount attaches to the left front support bracket, since they're both 8 x 50 mm bolts. I was thinking about trimming it down, but didn't have a hacksaw handy.

Panniers: Preparing the mounts on the panniers was pretty easy too.

Mounting the Panniers: took me a minute, but once you see how it fits on the mount brackets, it goes quick.

Finally complete. Comments or suggestions??

nga, the jesse's look great. Which model panniers are those? I'm trying to decide on different panniers right now. Since you are just up the road from me maybe we can get together. Would be nice to see some in person before committing.

They are the 10" Odyssey II and have a combined 105 liters of packing space. I've read a lot on them, and now since I have them, I love'em. Just shoot me an email and we'll try to meet up somewhere.

My right side Micatech Pilot showed up yesterday. I have another parcel notice today so hopefully it will all trickle in by the weekend, at which point I'll go by my local friendly Yamaha dealer on Saturday and attempt to install them on the bike.

I'll take some pics if successful. Just wanted to get you all lathered up .... as I know you are. ::014:: ::012::

More later. R

Jesse's are like black-tie compared to my Carhartt Happy Trails. :)

Looks good. All dressed up and ready to go.

Carhartt IS high end.
True. Quality stuff too. But where I live, we treat our carhartt gear rudely. :)
It looks nice for a day or two. Then it gets muddy, greasy, and soaked.

There is a reason we can get the stuff at Tractor Supply.

Jesse's are just as tough(er). But it would be a shame to bang and scratch and beat those beauties up.

Have Holan resolved their previously reported supply issues? I quite like the look of their set-up. Does anyone know if they've got the instructions (or lack of) fixed?
I can't see anywhere on their website to order a black set of cases, but I emailed them and had a reply saying they are available in black.

Since NGA did such a nice pictorial review of his new Jesse 10" Odyssey paniers, I won't show the same looking pictures. Instead, I added a little bling to mine in the form of Super Ténéré decals from ST-venture http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=4322.msg120098;topicseen#new.

and here they are compared to the OEM boxes. I really like the OEM boxes BTW, but need more capacity for 2-up camping.
left side

right side

My right side box was fiddly to mount to the rack. I called Jesse on a Saturday and left a request for help message. Mr. Al called me back and provided some fitting tips. It works now, much tighter than the left, but goes on and off.

I suppose I should part with my OEM paniers to defray the cost
