Vehicle Make / Model: Model Year(s):
YAMAHA / FJR1300 2006-2009

Manufacturer: YAMAHA MOTOR CORPORATION, USA Mfr's Report Date: JUN 24, 2011
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 11V338000 N/A
NHTSA Action Number: N/A

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
Potential Number of Units Affected: 9,850
Summary:
YAMAHA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2009 FJR1300 MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED FROM FEBRUARY 2006, THROUGH MARCH 2009. THE GROUND JOINT CONNECTOR OF THE WIRE HARNESS COULD OVERHEAT AND BECOME DEFORMED, POSSIBLY CAUSING AN INTERMITTENT GROUND WIRE CONNECTION. IF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS NOT PROPERLY GROUNDED, THE IGNITION SYSTEM AND/OR OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS COULD MALFUNCTION, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL.
Consequence:
IF THE MOTORCYCLE STALLS WHILE BEING RIDDEN, THERE COULD BE A CRASH RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH.
Remedy:
YAMAHA DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN ADDITIONAL WIRE SUB-LEAD OR, IF THE GROUND JOINT CONNECTOR HAS ALREADY BEEN DAMAGED FROM OVERHEATING, DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW MAIN WIRE HARNESS. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JULY 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT YAMAHA AT 1-800-962-7926.

Yamaha is good about taking care of things. Glad they are on it!

I purchased a 2004 a few months ago and just checked recalls on it due to your post. It just happens they have a recall on the throttle position switch causing erratic idle or ruff at low RPM's and could cause the bike to stall. I have those problems without the stalling. "yet" I am going to check with my dealer to see if the recall was performed on mine.

Thanks!

Yes, they are good. There was a recall a couple years ago for an ignition switch issue as well. This is second recall on my FJR. I'm still extremely pleased with the bike!!

I hope the U.S. bikes are on the way because typhoon Ma-On is forecast to hit Japan early next week. These poor folks just can't seem to catch a break. :(

Sure be nice to get a update for Yamaha !! I understand all the hardships they are overcoming but they still took all of our deposit money and have been using it for over 8 months without paying us for the use of it. We deserve some communication at the very least.. And now to hear they have poor accessory parts stocking is just another cause for concern.. Come on YOMAMA .. Show us some class !!

It almost seems like they don't have all that much control over the movement of the bikes until they hit the foreign shores. I gotta tell you, I'm mightily impressed with the way our bikes have moved since they hit Vancouver. Yamaha Canada has really fast tracked these boys. My dealer is impressed, also.

Probably because all 6 of them are black. They tend to get preferential treatment wherever you go. R

Not a flame - just an observation about how tough this is.

Just which Yamaha are you asking to communicate, because you just wrote about separate companies? Yamaha Corporate in Japan makes motorcycles and other products. Yamaha Motor Corp is a distributor and separate company. Then there'd be Dano-town Yamaha, which is a dealer holding your deposit. Or were you talking about the various accessory makers that YMC buys the accessories from?

I sympathize and would also love to know more, but dealing with these manufacturers is like peeling back layers on separate onions.

I'm very happy for our bros to the north. It would appear Yamaha Canada is way more on the ball than their peers to the south !!. However, I'm more inclined to believe that your superior customer service is based on that montary premium of 3000 bucks than color choice :)

Off the subject of the main thread, but speaking of recalls, if anyone has a 2011 FJR there will be a recall coming to replace the front brake switch.

It is quite likely that the Canadian bikes are different than the US bikes i.e. the Canadian FJR's all came with the cursed "red key" security system, in other words they were Euro-spec bikes. The US bikes are based on the FJR experience a unique model.

I would expect that once a canadian bike is delivered the security key issue will be answered.

It may also have a lot to do with the number of bikes ordered in Canada. I'm guessing no more than 60 tops. You southern boys probably ordered close to a thousand. 60 would be fairly easy to get distributed.

Plus we're used to sub-standard stuff up here. We're probably getting all the bikes that got rejected from the U. S. run. Dropped, scratched paint, gouged tires, spokes missing .... stuff like that. We're used to it. No worries. I mean, it IS Canada, after all. And it IS the Yukon. Years back we used to get the produce that people in Vancouver wouldn't buy. So they shipped it up here.

Send money. R

Thanks for cheering me up, Rod. The color may be the only bright light out of this whole sordid affair. I have to keep REMinding myself of that distinct advantage over a lot of you. I feel better already. R

I think Yam also gave some consideration to the fact that Canada's riding season ends before ours and so got the bikes to them first. Somebody's gotta be first, right?

Has anyone's dealer schedule begun showing a date rather than just a month for delivery?

Spoke with mine directly yesterday and he has heard not a word - trying to get a regional rep to tell him something but no go. He seems equally curious about the accessory packages as once the bikes leave the dealership, he may not have much contact with some of his customers. Seems like he sold a few from surrounding states and wants to get them the accessories before they leave (and righfully so if he presold them or otherwise wants to make a sale) No answer on that right now either.

I check YDS daily and our bike orders still only show August.

Also I check to see if the 2012 S10 set up manual is on line yet and it is not.

Don't let Rod get you down, Rem, he just wishes he could change his mind. :D :D

I got Black (which with the combined extra speed and stealth color, renders us virtually invisible to the C:)), and Rod got Blue.

We live a couple miles apart, so I'll let you know which color is fastest when ours come in. ;)
