I will have to check into this. I bought my bike used and I'm not sure if it's been done by the previous owner.

Thanks for the info!

It will *NOT* have been done by the previous owner... The recall notice was only issued by the NHTSA on February 10th, 2014, just a few days ago, and currently even the dealers are not aware of it yet. It will take some time for them to get up to speed on the recall, then get parts, etc. Even if you bought yours used if it falls into the recalled units your dealer will do the necessary repairs and re-fit to your bike, free of charge.

I've been a bit concerned and confused about that myself, Fred... As my PDP bike was manufactured 06/2011 (June 2011). Honestly, though, I can't imagine the PDP bikes will not be included in the recall somehow. I asked my dealer buddy about it but so far he knows zip, as they have not gotten anything from Yamaha on it.

I guess we'll see... :-\

Ya, that doesn't make much sense on the dates. Like you said, we'll see.

Thanks for this info. Just ran out to the garage and checked mine. 06/11 so it looks like I'm not covered. I have not had any melting issues, but I notice the headlights will intermittently stop and start working.
I would hope they cover the older ones as well. Subscribed, so I will keep following this.
Thanks again!

Does seem odd. That means I have one covered and one not covered. Seems strange they had it right, then things went wrong. Of course the PDP bikes were all built right after the tsunami, and the did have supplier issues.

Honestly, Folks...

I wouldn't worry too much about all this, especially if you are on good terms with your dealer. Yamaha has committed to apparently do the recall and repair of some 24,000 motorcycles (including both the R-1 and the Super Tenere units mentioned in the recall), and I'm 99.99% sure that Yamaha will do the recall on your bike if it is either a 2012 or 2013 model, period. Unlike some other brands, it's just not their style to duck customer issues, and this recall is just another example of that. Witness the very small number of NHTSA registered complaints on the issue, yet Yamaha is making good on them.

Further proof is the how they have recently replacing not just the harness itself, but the entire headlamp assembly and harness, when owners have had the problem. That's not the modus operandi of a company that is trying to duck the problem.

Give this some time... Let your dealer have some of that time to get informed and brought up to speed by Yamaha Cypress/USA, as well as for Yamaha to get the parts rolling for the recall. If you're a registered owner with Yamaha you will get a recall letter in the mail in fairly short order, and if not all you'll need to do is contact your dealer in a few weeks and ask. This is good news, folks, but it will take some time for it to all happen.

Where the heck do I find my bikes build month? I know it is #000565 and it is a PDP bike that I bought 8/11. The VIN doesn't give that info as far as I can tell.

Build date is on the white VIN sticker on the left frame down tube underneath the steering head.

Let's put our indignation about our early-prod bikes not being included on the recall on hold until the official recall works its way through channels. I'd bet we're looking at some preliminary information that will be corrected/clarified over time. AFAIK, a 6/2011 prod bike would have the same headlight wiring harness as a 11/2011 production bike so there is no technical reason they all wouldn't be included. I would think that would be Yamaha's intent even if they're a bit confused about when they started to build them.

Not necessarily. I have been in manufacturing for 20 years and supply chains change and so do components inside them. With the tsunami it’s quite possible there was a running change. But I also agree we are both guessing and I can’t wait to get home and check my build date.

Interesting. I guess that 'splains why my PDP Tenere hasn't had any problems with the headlight harness. Manufactured before 10/2011.

And here all the time, I thought it was operator and I was one of the few doing it right. ;D
Bad news I'm afraid. I have one of the first ones built (jun 2010) and my harness has just gone too (40k miles). Fortunately it is not too bad and externally there is no sign of burning but when the bulb went I could not get the plug off. When I did it had clearly been cooking and with a new bulb in it has an intermittent connection. The bike is in storage at present so I cannot look any further but when I strip it down to clean and replace all the bearings I'll have a closer look.

Hopefully the UK will be doing the recalls by then too. Look on the bright side: It could have BMW's problems. ::025::

Those build dates don't add up in my mind but it looks to me the affected VIN's are included in the documentation Dallara provided...

Well, there ya' go!

Thanks, JimBob! Great catch! ::003::

I had completely missed that one. Appreciate you pointing it out, and as it happens my VIN (0000399)is, indeed, included, as I am sure most everybody's is now that I look at those numbers.

Actually, Ray...

The UK already has a recall active and running on the problem - http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=10771.0 - so you're covered! ::012::

Lots of angst and stress spread across the recall threads. (popin up everywhere. Lol)

The improved harness has been around for some time now. You can have it anytime you want. You do not have to wait.
But FREE is the catch, I bet! :)
Breakfast yesterday cost me $78 + a nice tip for the poor lady that had to deal with my rowdy college kids.

How much does that harness cost?

Depending on where you buy, it looks like they run anywhere from 55.00 - 75.00 before shipping costs.

Does anyone happen to have the part no. for the replaced harness?
Has anyone replaced the faulty wiring themselves?
My bike falls into the vin. parameters.

It's right here where it's always been - http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=1326.0

The new harness part number is - 23P-84312-01-00 - and it has been posted in numerous other threads, as a quick search would have shown... ;)

Those numbers don't seem to jive with what I have - my build date is 06/2013 but the series number is in the 3800 range. Makes me wonder if those are USA VIN ranges.

Not sure what you mean... Your 3800 VIN is right in there between 0000002 and 0004046 for 2012 through 2013 XT1200 Super Tenere's... :-\

(in this case the "C" in the XT1200C refers to California bikes)

So I assume at some point we are suppose to get a letter from Yamaha notifying us of this recall. I suppose there is no point in calling the dealer until Yamaha notifies the owners??
