Seems there has been a recall in place here in the USA for a couple of weeks now...

---

Report Receipt Date: FEB 10, 2014
NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V044000
Component(s):
All Products Associated with this Recall expand
Details close
7 Associated Documents expand
Manufacturer: Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA
SUMMARY:
Yamaha Motor Corporation USA (Yamaha) is recalling certain model year 2009-2013 YZFR1 motorcycles manufactured October 2008 through August 2013 and 2012-2013 XTZ12 motorcycles manufactured October 2011 through August 2013. In the affected motorcycles, use of the headlight may generate enough heat to cause the bulb connections to expand, resulting in arcing in the headlight bulb socket which could cause the socket to overheat, melt and cause the headlight to malfunction.
CONSEQUENCE:
A headlight failure reduces the rider's ability to see clearly and the motorcycle's visibility to oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of a crash.
REMEDY:
Yamaha will notify owners and dealers will replace the headlight socket, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in February 2014. Owners may contact Yamaha at 1-800-962-7926.
NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Nice find! Lots of people will be happy, but I know a few paid out of pocket for the new, upgraded part no.

The Tenere is one increment closer on its quest to perfection. ::022::

WoW, Dallara, How did you find the info on this?? ::012:: ::008::

Great news, especially for those who have had the issue, hopefully they'll be able to get refunded, and for the rest of us something now that we can get fixed and not have to worry about going fwd.

THANKS a TON.

Excellent! I have noticed my right headlight going out more and more frequently. Checking the connection turned up a melted and crumbling plug. Passed warranty so I very happy to see this. Thank you for the info.

Just said this in another thread, but will say it again here:
Kudos to Yamaha for standing behind their product! There were only two reports of headlamp issues to the NHTSA about the Tenere headlamp issue, and Zero reports for the R1. To me, this says that Yamaha are taking the bull by the horns and correcting an issue without being forced by anyone. Good for us, and ultimately, it will be good for Yamaha.

This is my first Yamaha motorcycle, though I've played their drums for years, I'm quickly becoming a fan of the Motorsport division! Good show.

Thanks for the info, Dallara!

Interesting. As I mentioned in the AU recall thread, I contacted my local dealer and he said he called Yamaha and their were no recalls listed as of a few days ago. I guess I'll have to call again and reference this recall notice when I speak with him.

In the USA there is often a bit of lag from the recall being announced to dealers being "officially" in the loop. I've been in the car business for 15 years and can't tell you how many times customers find out about recalls coming down the pike before we know about it. Or, the recall gets announced in the media as "upcoming" and customers expect us to have parts-in-hand and ready to go, when the reality is it could be weeks before the parts are available, or official mailings to customers will begin.

In short, if the recall is announced in the media, and the manufacturer hasn't released the Technical Service Bulletin addressing the recall, the dealership will likely not have the details needed to address customer questions such as, "when, where, how, and why?".

Be patient with your dealer, they have to operate on information from the manufacturer, which may not be as timely as they'd like it to be..,

Ya, I noticed the other supporting documents. Looks like the dealers are the last to know. Kind of funny really. Mine appear to working and I have my led's as well so not too worried.

Creggur,

My wife is an RN. In fact, she was my nurse in 1981. She had no idea that patient was gonna get his way one way or another. :)

Anyways, in our 50's, she still thinks I don't take proper care of myself.
Just irks her to no end when I get my old man health check and my vitals are all good. Low cholesterol. Low blood pressure. ....lol
I torture her with it.

In real life I am actually loud, animated, and passionate about the things that matter to me. But, I like to think not much really bothers me. I have been blessed. Have so little to complain about. Certainly only first world silly stuff.

Truth is, I'm having a ball.

So basically Yamaha is acknowledging there is an issue, which has been noted on this site several times in the past. Now they are going to take care of it. Cool..
Has anyone called Yamaha to see if their VIN falls into the faulty harness? Have they said when the VIN's will be released if they haven't already?

If you take a close look at all the documents shown here - http://timetunnel.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Super-Tenere-Harness-Recall/37217181_pjRDJx#!i=3089828416&k=KnnpbSq - you will see the recall is not dictated by VIN number, but instead by manufacturing date (which is right there on the manufacturer's ID plate where your VIN is), and for Super Tenere models includes *ALL* units manufactured between 10/2011 (October 2011) and 08/2013 (August 2013), as shown here:

If you take a look at the documents shown in the link above you will see some additional information on the recall, as well as the complete installation instructions that will direct dealership technicians on how to do the job to Yamaha's specifications, complete with the unit will be marked to show the recall has been done.

Interesting. I guess that 'splains why my PDP Tenere hasn't had any problems with the headlight harness. Manufactured before 10/2011.

And here all the time, I thought it was operator and I was one of the few doing it right. ;D

I've been a bit concerned and confused about that myself, Fred... As my PDP bike was manufactured 06/2011 (June 2011). Honestly, though, I can't imagine the PDP bikes will not be included in the recall somehow. I asked my dealer buddy about it but so far he knows zip, as they have not gotten anything from Yamaha on it.

I guess we'll see... :-\

BTW, I'm glad you chimed in on this thread. Reminds me I have to get that route info to you!!!

I will have to check into this. I bought my bike used and I'm not sure if it's been done by the previous owner.

Thanks for the info!
