I'm 6' 1" and my knees touch the guards if I sit up the front of the seat I think these would be a problem for me, and in a big off it wouldn't be a good thing to have a leg between it and the ground, having said that I have always thought the bike was very exposed in that area :-\

This is my thought also as I'm 6'1" Two up my knees nearly touch the back edge of the side covers. The guy in the photo looks around 5' 10"? I dont think getting traped in a fall would be an issue, they look like stick out too far, but wearing holes in the knees of a new pair of Jofama leggings would be :'( :'( :'(

uhh.. looks like a huge gap to me. You would have to be 7 foot for that bar to effect you. It looks to be a good 4 to 5 inches from the 5' 10" guy.

silly..

Hey guys - some more crashbar porn. :) This is the first production test set, fully welded and powdercoated. I'm hoping to get an ETA later today or tomorrow on when the first full production run will be done and will let you know as soon as I hear.

The DSBP team also has one more "party trick" in store for these crashbars....new pictures to follow shortly..... ::024::

Please keep us updated "grumpy" also in the Uk and also like the idea. Although concerned about how it bolts to frame at the rear.

First production set installed for a local customer in Spain!

EU customers will probably get theirs sooner, but we're expecting these to arrive in the US in the next two weeks!

Pics of the newest cool feature coming up next.... :)

Yep....custom Cordura bags for your new upper crashbars. ::008:: These are held on with a D-ring/heavy duty velcro attachment and probably suitable for lighter gear (rain suit, gloves, other small kit). I should have more details this weekend, but the bag itself is Cordura nylon with a rubberized dry bag material outer section and a reflective stripe. No idea yet on price for these, and am confirming Customs import requirements as textiles are a lot different than motorcycle parts. If you're interested, please let me know and I can get specs and pricing.

It looks like the flap over the zipper opens from the front to the rear? Can't help but wonder about water intrusion at the zipper and if the flaps will be flapping in the breeze. Waterproof zippers?

It certainly looks like a nice option for some extra storage. I can't help but think that anything in there better be non-necessity items. If the crash bars have to do their job, well those bags are going to be worse for wear, along with any contents.

Cool idea though. ::008:: I get into my tank bag while moving too much to give it up, but the bar bags certainly offer some extra storage potential.

Hi guys - thanks for the comments and feedback. I really like the idea of using the bars as a spot to mount a GoPro or similar video camera....probably could capture some nice action shots!

On the bags, I agree with EricV - anything you put in there should be something you can live without if your bike decides to take a nap. Probably not the best location to carry your collection of Faberge eggs to the next Super Tenere rally. :D I've asked for more details on the bags, including pictures of the zippers and enclosure. Preliminary pricing has the bags alone coming in around $110, and I would expect different color options for the dry bag insert are available.

I also just received some good pictures of the production set mounted (see below) and as we are probably 1-2 weeks away from delivery to the US, have put the crashbars up on our site for pre-order. You can click here, or on any of the pictures below to be linked to the product page. The price is $189.99, and I should be getting 5 sets from the first production run, with another production run already underway in Spain. Pre-orders will be filled first in order of receipt, and then any remaining stock will be made available in store inventory (status will show "In Stock").

Any questions, please let me know!

Hi Carrot - if the bike falls on level ground fast enough to essentially go almost parallel, the bike will rest on the upper crashbars and (most likely) the tires. I'll see if I can find a willing participant to test, but I don't believe the lower bars will contact the ground in that scenario. The lower bars will do a nice job of protecting the engine cases from intrusion in non-level ground, while the upper bars will keep the side covers (and expensive bits underneath) from getting crunched. I don't think the actual overall width of the bars has changed from prototype to production so it may just be varying camera angles, but I'll see if I can get an overall width when installed for reference. A little bit of space between the bars and bodywork isn't a bad thing to give them room to do their job (without pushing into the bodywork) if the bike goes down.

Any other questions, please let me know.

Thanks!

Well, the bars arrived. When I opened the packaging one of the fixing bolts was loose in the bubble wrap and no sign of the dome nut, so I have had to substitute a lock nut for now.
Anyway, the fitting, If like me you have large hands you will need to remove the battery side cover and loosen the rad. side as getting the bolt into the rear fixing points is just a bit tight. On the battery side I needed to use a pair of long nose pliers to help get the bolt into the hole as there is a lot of cabling to get by. But the right side went on without fuss and the side cover was replaced without any probs.
Now the left side. I managed to get the bolt through the hole using my left hand, no problem, but then I found I had no room to get anything in to stop the bolt from rotating as I torqued up the nut. At this point I had a good look at the left hand crash bar, the one the dome nut was missing from. Well it seems I have been given one of the prototype's, rough welding, grooves from milling visible due to the spat on paint and the finnish is dull and a different shade of black compared to the RH side. I am 6'1", with a 33" in seam and my knees are about 3/4 inch from the bars with jeans on, but I think my armour'd leggings will touch them. I could not get a good pic of the knee clearance as I am home alone today.

Apologies for the so-so photos, I am using my phone.

You can see the difference in the welding and finish in these two shots.

Hi Grumpy - have you already reached out to DS Bike? It's tough to see the detail in the pictures (the flash washed out some of them, or I just may need new glasses!) but I'm sure he'll want to hear from you. PM me if you need their contact info, or I would be happy to pass your info along. We've previously imported the DS Bike crashbars for the liquid cooled GS and have been really pleased with the fit and finish, so your description definitely sounds atypical.

Thanks!

I sent an email to ds bike protection and Sisco replied, he apologised for the mix up and will be sending me a replacement crash bar next week, FOC. I have also ordered some more goodies from him that he will post at the same time. ::008::

The first set of crashbars have arrived in New York and are ready to ship! ::012:: You can click on any of the pictures below to be linked to the product page.

I should have at least 2-3 sets left after all pre-orders are filled, and will be bringing in more from Spain as they become available. They are already selling very rapidly in Europe, but I know DS Bike has more production scheduled to keep up with demand. I also got a sample set of bags and will take some detailed pictures when I get a chance...in the meantime, some more crashbar porn.... ::008::
