Still rising. No mailbox viewable now. Down to about 6" before house is breached.
Yea, Mark's barn-dominium is about 6" higher yet. Maybe a bit more.

But it's pouring again and mother nature is refusing to pull the plug and drain this dang tub. (need a Gulf low-tide really quick)

Oh well, at some point ya just throw in the towel and surrender. Lol

Honestly?, some of yaw know my motto...... Only the things that really matter, matter. Getting stuff wet? Doesn't make the list.

the latest is that the center is back in the gulf and is building strength...... Harvey ,your like a bad relative come to visit and you won't go away.... and when you do ,we will find that you were nothing buy a thief come to ruin lives. so go away , you should not even have a name , you are not worth knowing.....and sometime later probably Wednesday Harvey is going to track over Houston and then slowly move toward Louisiana .... and ruin more lives.....

Yea, I've lived down here on the coast for 60 years. Been through a lot of hurricanes. That's 60 years worth!

This one beat me today. I'm really proud of my kids. They tirelessly made every effort for the last 4 days to protect our homes and assets.
(We have 2 homes and my tinyhouse on the acreage) I know they are so disappointed as they shut off the power and abandoned ship a couple of hours ago.
But I told them to go find a warm dry bed somewhere and wait it out. We'll fix everything later.

This would have been just another hurricane, in my book, if it'd just did what hurricanes do. I mean today this is supposed to be a rainstorm somewhere over PENNSYLVANIA!

I don't remember any hurricane ever making landfall and then squatting for DAYS without hardly moving 30 miles. That's just amazing. And THAT is the only reason why I came up short 13 years ago when deciding how high to build. I'm just stunned it wasn't high enough. Crazy! Never dreamed it was possible for water to reach 8' out at street level. Unimaginable.

Regardless, all my kidos (all in their 20's) are safe. And my grandkids got to witness an extraordinary human effort.

We'll be better for it, in the long run. That's my spin anyways tonight. :)

Snake .. you're a real piece of work. We could ALL learn so much from your mindset. I'm glad to "know" you even though we've never met.

I don't fly into HOU very often, and when I do, we use that Wilson Air place (sorry...lol). But you can bet when I fly in, I'm looking you up.

Best of luck as you and your family recover from this.

Thanks SPX! You ain't flying into HOU now though, that's for sure. Unless ya got a seaplane. ;)

Yea, look me up! (ask for "Cowboy" when ya call)
Warning though, I don't go into "the office" much anymore. The data center I built them ~20 years ago is mostly in-the-cloud these days. So, you know.....my office is anywhere a cell tower has LTE.

Bruce - I feel for you, my friend!! I hope it all works out in the end. Sounds like you have passed along some of your zen to your kids. They are better off for it.

Your grasp of life's essentials reminds me of us sitting in my backyard this past May after a day of thrashing the 500's in the WV woods with Jason for two days and spontaneously realizing that you have life dialed into the very essence of what is important. When you look up and say - "I just don't give a shit!" - the casual observer may not divine that you are simply trying to say that there are important things in this world to actually "worry" about and then there are the trivial aspects that should be taken in stride if not ignored.

It was at that moment that we realized that the Coen brothers must have prototyped you when they came up with the Big Lebowski. While "the Dude Abides" might roll off the tongue a bit easier than "Snake Abides" - the parallels are undoubtedly there. Best of luck with your recovery efforts and please know that all of us are wishing you and your family a safe and speedy recovery.

In the year 1888 Nietzche said this
"Whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you stronger"

And there is some truth in this, but of course, there is plenty of situations where this is "bull shit".

I have so many good friends here, all because of just one motorcycle I started fancying about 7 years ago.

I'm a much richer man because of it! And a bunch of you fine gents that I've shared campgrounds with must know how I feel about ya by now.

(Wreckerchecker, (one of those gents indeed) feel free to lock this thread for getting entirely too sappy. ::013::

Lock it? Like heck.
You know you have friends here when you might need to ask, to share with, and we want to hear how our friend is doing. As Harrison remembered, you're a gem at reminding us about what is important.

And as to all the other Texans here - and there are a bunch of you. Please know that you aren't forgotten either!

When things dry out, maybe next Spring, we ought to try to have a Texas BBQ meetup somewhere down there.

I am a Californian in Tennessee and headed to Texas tomorrow. Was not planning on going to the Houston area but if you need somethings I can try to get to your location. Let me know. I am not riding my Tenere though driving a Ford Escape AWD.

Thanks for the offer TomatoBrother.

I wouldn't go near the place! Honestly, Mark (my brother from another mother) and I are both up on top of a Colorado mountain, realizing that what we brought up here might be all we got!
Which is not as bad as it might sound.

We both have homes, albeit on wheels. (Dry and comfortable too)
We both have a truck up here.
I even have one of my bikes!

Anyways, we aren't even going home to Texas yet. So I'd never ask someone else to.

I suspect it'll be several more days before the sanity of it all returns. And still, why try to be first in line to get FEMA\insurance help when there has to be many thousands that need it far more?
Sounds like volunteering for some kind of race that I want no part of. I figure we'll mosey back eventually. Pull our RV's back to the rear of the property where I have a septic and utilities for my "live-in" RV'
(by now, it's sure to be a casualty too. Do modern RV's float? If they do, since they're like giant igloo coolers, it'll be interesting to see where it went)

Hookup. Get a comfortable camp setup. Then start the process of rebuilding, that I've never experienced before.
It'll be interesting.

One thing for sure, since we're both older and already had our turn at "The American Dream", we'll get to have fun picking on the kids if we find them getting too serious.
I can easily imagine how different their perception is right now. In fact, I probably am in some trouble from a couple of them for sitting the whole thing out!

That sounds fair.

Bruce, I have nothing insightful to say. Just glad you are safe and obviously you taught your children well. I know you had a great teaching partner and I bet she would be proud to see what your combined efforts produced.

Thanks for showing us a great example of keeping your perspective in the face of a challenging situation.

All the best to you and your family as you go through this event and recovery.

I left Houston on Saturday just as the rains started. I knew it wasn't going to be pretty so loaded up the dirt bikes, camping gear and headed north. Currently outside Muskogee OK at a beautiful ORV place. Why wait out the storm inside 4 walls when you can be outdoors and riding? The house, Tenere and other bikes are insured so why stress? If I come back and they're flood damaged I start fresh. I can't do anything until the water recedes and the roads open again anyway.

You guys sound like your taking it good, hope the best for all you Houstonites.

We are actually dry here, very dry. We pray for rain around here. It's to late for a lot of the crops though.

Snake and Silverbullet, glad to hear you're both safe and in good spirits.
You guys are teaching a valuable life lesson about grace and priorities.

Whenever crap happens somewhere, I think "do I know anyone there?" I'm not glad for the circumstances, but you were both in my thoughts when the rain started falling in Texas. I should've known you'd both be out on a walkabout somewhere. ::008::
