as I type the heading ,Harvey ,a category 4 hurricane is about to make land fall.... it is subjecting millions of Texans to a nightmare of not knowing what is going to be their future , at least for the short term... some will lose everything they have, some may even lose their lives.... some of these Texans are even forum members.... so this weekend where ever you are as you see the news, maybe offer up a prayer for those who's lives are about to be upside down for awhile to come... we live in a great country , resources all around to help , it will not be enough for some ,if not most who will lose everything this weekend... and when its done its worst , most will pick up the pieces of their lives and move on , some may even find a blessing in this .... Pray.

at 830pm about my bed time, as I am a chicken and go to bed with the sun. hurricane Harvey was making landfall at Rockport , so I wake at 230 am this morning and I check radar and it is now over or near Refugio Tx. it has moved ,a category 4 storm , about 20 miles as the crow flies . think about this , 130 mph winds beating, pounding unrelenting pressure on your home. for 5 plus hours this is happening , not in my wildest imagination could I comprehend this, yet multitudes of families chose to stay home and ride out this nightmare.... its raining lightly at my house this morning , the kind of rain that while sitting on your porch drinking your coffee makes all seem well in life... the monster is deceptive.....

Thanks for the updates.
I hardly know what is going on out there, our tv gets no news channels so we don't even watch it.

I'm located near Buda Tx. just outside of Austin Tx. just been steady rain , 2 to 3 inches I'm guessing so far... no flooding yet... Victoria Tx. has had an apartment complex catch fire and a complete loss is whats been reported... Bolivar peninsula has had a home destroyed by fire and numerous vehicles included..... no word on human casualties.... lots of tornado warnings ,as hurricanes tend to spawn tornadoes... it will soon become a flood issue as the storm plays out, central Texas is known as flash flood alley.... flash floods kill more people here than any other type of weather issue... large numbers of first responders heading toward the coast , God bless and protect them...

We're getting all the water from Harvey (dirty side) but thankfully not the direct hit of wind.

I'm currently hiding up in Colorado, but am getting updates from the kids.
Here are some pics from the last time........

Normal day, entrance to my place.

After the deluge

A view from the street. My mailbox and white fenceline on the right.

The main house is about 250 yards back in the woods. Fortunately built on a hill.

Kinda cool looking back from the porch

So far it's not quiet up to this level. But we're just getting started. It's coming down and is predicted to not let up. And this property usually floods from the water dropped in Houston, about 30-40 miles north, as their rivers and bayous dump towards the coast. Passing right by us.

for the moment it seems that the worst is over for the Austin area as the storm is shifting the rain towards east texas ...though not out of the woods completely , hurricanes do their own thing , and this storm seems intent on hanging around... what I am hearing is mostly property damage with a minimal loss of human life( 2 reported so far ) of course if your one of the unfortunate its pretty much complete devastation. forever! as for the east Texas and Louisiana they are getting floods or are about to... for those who pray , thank you and keep on praying...

the storm is trying to drown the Houston area... the mayor did not advise evacuation , so that place is a mess .... you hear about the major communities that are being effected by all of this , there are hundreds of small towns in all of this enduring the same trauma and without the resources of the larger communities..... I am betting on a billion dollar impact to Texas when all is said and done.... multiple billions maybe... and Harvey is slowly drifting back toward the coast, south and east.... it may be in the Houston area a couple more days.....

Yea, I get picture updates from the kids often. Their still anxious because they watched the waters rise and trap them on the little hill the house is on.
Currently their pics are eerily similar to those I posted above, which is good news, if that is where it stops. But I didn't want to alarm them by pointing out this time it isn't a couple of days after the rain ended.
I am certain that we have a ways to go. However, just from a geological perspective, each foot of the 3 we have to spare, would require far more water than the initial 5 feet that the water has risen.
In other words, the "valley" widens as you move up. Know what I mean?

I'm not tempting mother nature though. She can humble any mans reckoning.

Snake do they have a boat if needed?

Or do you have a bike with skees and paddle tires? Just in case they need bread or milk?

Got 3 kayaks. So they can get out if needed. One of them is big enough to carry a couple of adults and a couple of more kids.

Top pick is late today. Second pick was a previous flood. About 10 years ago. With the mailbox as the gauge, it's already a bit higher this time.
My biggest concern is that it is highly doubtful we've crested.

Hey Bruce everyone here is praying for you all. We had a bad flood in 2010 and wouldn't wish it on anyone. How are you located in relation to the reservoirs? The corp had to release ours and compounded the flood Nashville had. Anyone heard from Silverbullet? I'm thinking he's northeast of town for some reason.

I'm sure snake has a better view on how things are in Houston as how floods go , but this is the way of geology, Houston is basically flat..... built on the coastal plain , which is flat , the only drainage is the creeks and bayous ... reservoirs ie; lakes are up in the piney woods of east Texas , and the rain coming from the south created the flooding before it ever got to a lake.... in Austin the lakes are barely affected , the majority of the rain has been below Austin so nothing going in to the lakes to catch some of this water.... we have been very fortunate that we have been mostly on the edge of all of this . a soggy mess and for those of us in construction ,not much to do till it dries up and that will not be for a few more days... as I write this I hear the TV weather guy saying that the center of this mess will move back off shore were it will maintain its tropical storm status , then it will back over Houston before it ends up eventually in Arkansas Louisiana area to continue its flooding ways on those good folks.... not expected to be out of here completely till Friday or so.... there are about 20000 people stuck on cruise ships in the gulf of mexico that can't get back to Galveston as the port is closed.... and even if they could, travel through Houston is doubtful .... hope they have plenty of beer...

Hi Bruce,

hope all turns out well for your kids. Glad you built the house up. How's your neighbor doing with the weiner dogs? His place is higher still is it not?
