Have any of you wheel balancing folks (or dyna bead folks) actually tried a tire prior to balancing and found it unacceptable?

I stopped balancing my motorcycle wheels over a dozen tires ago, and never once have I had one that felt 'out of balance'.

I didn't notice it till Joe-joe said something, but apparently Yamaha feels it's an unnecessary step as well.

::021::
You should balance the wheels on road bikes IMOP. You do need to balance the K60's if you would like the best performance long term out of them...

Yamaha spins (balances) ALL the wheels with the tires on them. Because they are building and installing a TON of wheels a day they have some semi-loose parameters on balancing the wheels. MANY of the Super Teners have weights on both wheels, like my bike. Some have one on the front or back, further more, some have none at all... This ONLY means they where close... If you like your bike better than "close", I would suggest you or the shop take the extra five minutes and properly check the balance of the wheel. You and your wheels will be better off for the next 10K + miles......... If your going to sell the bike in a few weeks, then dont bother.... :D

By the way, Before I threw my K60's on I threw the stock tire with stock weights on the balance machine.. They where off... They where kinda close, but off.... After I got the K60's on my rims the rear needed one weight, and the front has a few. Now they are spot on ! ::26:: Probably a good thing, doing 75mph on the highway, or 75mph in the dirt...... ::)

One thing I learned while watching tires get mounted at a tire shop. Pour the Dyna beads in the tire after the forst tire bead is on the rim. Not difficult and the tire is at angle already so they are not going to spill out on the floor. Then simply finish mounting the tire , seat the bead and go.
Worked for me on my last tire and did not spill one bead.
Hope this helps

First real ride with these tires yesterday, I did a little over 200 miles , 20 or so on sand , 20 or so twisty, and the rest on Florida's hellishly straight level roads. I was expecting way more vibes when braking from what I read before mounting them. I can still hit the curves at the same speed as I did with my battlewings on, and I was blasting around in the sand like I actually knew what I was doing. :D Someone else said the bike should have come with these tires on and I couldn't agree more. If your on the fence just go for it, their a great tire.

What are others running?

I've been running 34 F, 44 R since my K-60s were mounted somewhat over 20K miles ago. There is still plenty of tread left fron t and rear. I'll post pics in a separate thread this coming week.

Might want to glance at the max pressure on the sidewalls since you're running them at 44 when the max pressure is 36.

Let's see if this becomes like an oil thread.

I installed my K60s about 2 weeks ago. Using the red dot at the valve stem the front required no wheel weights. The rear initally looked like it would need one small weight but I rotated the tire's red dot around the rim and found a spot that the rear balanced without any weights applied. I prefer this to adding weights that can and do get tossed off the rim in ruff/muddy terrain. So far great tires and I am expecting long tread life. I am 70 road/ 30 off road. Thanks to Jaxon for the confirmation I needed in making my decision.

My rear tire looks just a bit better than that but not not much. Yes based on total tread at the start and tread depth left I think there is 2,000 miles left in those.

Just went out and checked mine. I have a new set in the garage and the tread depth near the center is 13mm. The tread depth on my 10,000 mile tires in the same place is 5mm. That means there is still 40% of the oringinal tread dpeth left. heck they might go 14,000 miles!

An anticipated 14K miles on a set of K60 Scouts is great news. And to think I used to get about 2800K miles on a couple of my former street machines! Looks like the gas & oil fund is getting a boost.

The only negatives with the things are the continual back orders on the rears and the high price

Cost per mile appears quite competitive, though.

Mounted my K60's this weekend. Used 2 oz dynabeads in rear and 1 oz up front.

Also upgraded the wheels to SS heavy duty spokes and nipples (what a chore).

They handle very good for what they are. A little rumbly around 20mph and a small amount of high frequency vibes at 75mph. A little squirelly over really rough pavement while cornering. But nothing compared to a dual sport with full knobbies on pavement.

Totally tolerable in exchange for the off road grip and wear.

Leaving Sat for a 7k mile trip including the entire CDR and I plan to use these for the whole trip.

Best,
Andy
