Here is a general question: Is there an established way to keep "others " from taking off your quick release brackets off along with your bags and equipment? I mean 4 quick turns and their yours. Maybe I'll just use regular bolts through them. I will seldom remove them I am sure about that.

Hey Clem, they offer the rack locks for $39.99. I added them to my order for just this reason.

that is what I thought they were, I had no clue. I thought they were for the box.

thanks, ok a 39.00 fix, or a few bolts. I just don't see myself taking them off. but maybe

Yup, that's it. Alternatively, we've had some customers take out the quarter-turns and install nuts and bolts. This option works fine if you don't plan on taking your rack off.

Call me the devil's advocate here. >:D

I'm planning on Caribous. I've heard a lot about how they crack and leak in a crash. I'm a bit skeptical since I have a Pelican and it's stout for Hell. However, let's just say they're right about Pelicans and I'm right in believing that aluminum cases tweak and leak in a similar situation. I would like to know how much it costs to repair or replace a Micatech (or any other aluminum case for that matter) after the disaster. I can buy brand new replacement Pelican 1550's on the open market for $120 each and transfer the locks and mounts myself.

Will the fix on aluminum cases be that inexpensive?? I suspect not, but am willing to consider data that's verifiable through the manufacturers.

I have no problem with Micatechs, they appear to be a good looking, stout, solution.

Paul

You make a valid point. I suspect it would be almost not worth the effort to "repair" an aluminum pannier. I guess it depends on the extent and nature of the damage. I seriously considered Caribous. The main point about them is that you should never have to buy another one. According to their warranty, they will be replaced regardless of how or why the damage occurred. They are guaranteed for life, forever, for good.

I'm not sure why I finally went with the Micatechs. I'm sure you will be very content with the Caribous. I guess it simply comes down to a matter of personal choice. I may at some point wish I had done the same. R

Considering the pelicans are guaranteed for life your cost is actually just shipping. As for Aluminum paniers considering the straitening and re-powder coating $120 repair is not likely.

The pelicans are a fine choice, and the value leader as well. They will leak if used hard. They will crack if used hard. The plastic breaks down in severe sunshine, and begins to make pock marks, rendering the bags looking badly. I would own them again, they are just not as nice as the Mica's. And the Mica's are significantly more money. So , it's a matter of choosing what you like. I would say that the Mica's can withstand the same kind of abuse, maybe a little more. Used normally, I feel the Mica's win.

I never said they were bad, I think they are a good choice. But when people say they are indestructible that has not been MY experience.

Maybe there is a way to combine the best traits of both .... you could call them MicaCans.

I don't think PeliTechs would fly .... oooo, that was bad. Sorry. R

It certainly is .... you won't catch me participating in such nonsense.

Maybe you and I should conspire and make our own ... RemRiders ???? ColoCartons ??? Ok, Ok .... it's like 18 degrees here this morning. Back to reality. Someone is gonna have to pay for this. And Mother Nature just gave birth to a litter of puppies ..... R

No kidding. Good stuff. Glad to hear it. At least you'll have time to get really well acquainted. Supposed to get nice here this weekend. Finally. If you can believe the lying weather vermin. R

Weather does look good. Heading to the pass today for the weekend, last snowmobile ride of the year!!

Then putting the sleds away, hope I can avoid scooping filler bike between now and the arrival of the S10

I think you better plan on scooping. I think I'll do the Tagish Loop this weekend. I'll maybe strap on a Micatech pannier for a first ride kind of thing. Just to break him in .... uh, don't say break, I guess. Just to initiate him into the wonderful world of biking. R

Okay, I missed the boat on the group buy by only a few months.

I've read thru this thread and am leaning real hard toward this pannier set-up. Of course more pictures would definitely help sway me. I have a couple questions, while I'm not sure can be answered since no bags are mounted yet, I am curious about.

1) Slope of the pannier top. From the photo-chopped pics, it appears the top of the panniers are not level to the ground, but have a slight slope. If the bike is mounted on the center stand, is the pannier top going to be level?

2) Side door levelness. Same question as above, is the door going to be a flat level surface when the bike is on the center stand?

3) How well will the aluminum and powder coating hold up to heat? I am curious if say either the top or side door was level, could a small camp type stove be used on the aluminum surface without damage?

Thanks.

1. I hope so, cause that is what I want it to be. It appears to be the case on the DL, so I am hoping for the same on the Tenere

2. Side door open is level on the DL, able to hold a drink no problem, no Tenere to try it on that yet.

3 As far as heat and powder coating, I would say better than paint, and better than Pelican poly bags, although I have never tried it.

feel free to email Sue at Micatech : info@micatech.net

I like mine and use them on my DL for the time being.
