I never really look for technical accuracy in Westerns; if I did, I'd be endlessly disappointed (I'd once heard the Tombstone event referred to more as an old west version of the Sopranos rather than a battle of good and evil, and I definitely agree with that). Westerns are a unique American mythology; they're our version of the stories of Zeus, or Hercules, or Beowulf. When they are at their best, I think they define what Americans believe about themselves and their country. If I watch a movie like the Searchers, whether or not the clothing is accurate, or if Ethan has the right kind of Winchester, is totally irrelevant to me; the story it tells, and the epic way it depicts the West, are what resonate with me.
