They listened to them when some owners of the Gen 1 bikes said they needed a gear indicator because they had no idea what gear they were in and somehow that was a problem for them. They added a gear indicator and now we have riders that don't know that you should downshift all the way to first before you come to a stop. Perhaps they will update that and also have a shift light to tell us when we should shift. ;D

So Fred, you like those "up shift" arrows on the dash?! ::025::

All said, I do like a gear indicator. It's something I never missed before I had one, but after owning a couple bikes with the feature, you come to appreciate them.

For the record, I'm older than you, Brick. But you are correct on the grumpy part. ;D

Hi Rod,

No, I prefer to have the up shift light right in the center of the windscreen, since we all know that it is unsafe to take your eyes off the road for a second to look down at such things as a GPS, speedo, or shift light. It's bad enough when I have to look down to see which side of the handlebar the clutch or brake lever is on each time I want to use them. We should probably have indicators in the windscreen to tell us that while we're at it. :D

Makes you wonder how some people managed to ride a bike before such things were invented. ;D

I'm a bit annoyed with the digital gear indicator

So, I've got issues with the digital gear indicator. I don't like how it doesn't constantly show the gear. When the clutch is pulled in, it goes blank. Even after releasing the clutch for a bit, it still doesn't show. Mine even shows the wrong gear in some instances, like when cornering in 3rd gear, it'll indicate 2nd gear for a bit, then jump to 3rd.

My Gen 2 Wee indicates gear constantly. It's much handier.

I don't understand why Yamaha would set theirs up the way they did.

Anyone else similarly annoyed?

Re: I'm a bit annoyed with the digital gear indicator

I would LIKE it to react quicker, but most of the time I'm not even looking at it. Which could be why I've never seen the wrong gear indicated. For the most part I use the indicator to confirm neutral at start-up or 6th gear going down the road. (Coming from 5-speed bikes, I still sometimes forget I have an extra gear.)

Re: I'm a bit annoyed with the digital gear indicator

I agree. When I am hard braking and bumping down through the gears I would like to know where I am at BEFORE I let out the clutch. My FJR gave an instant reading so you always knew where you were. This gear indicator stinks.

Re: I'm a bit annoyed with the digital gear indicator

The S10 doesn't really have a gear indicator, there is no switching mechanism in the transmission to tell the display what gear is selected. The ECU is simply comparing the engine rpm to road speed and displays the number that best matches the ratio. If the clutch is slipping the number will be lower than the actual gear selected, and when the clutch is pulled there is no fixed ratio so the display goes blank.
I find it annoying when stopped in traffic or at a stoplight, wish I could see if I'm in first, or still hung up in 2 or 3 but with the clutch pulled the display is blank because without the wheels turning the ECU doesn't know what gear is selected.
If it's any consolation, you could spend $50k on a new Harley CVO, and it does the same thing.

Does that price include all the pirate clothes, bandana, assless chaps, & get-back whip? Cuz I'm sure that stuff adds up.........

Merged your new thread with some of the existing ones. Read back through this thread for the "understand" part.

See Reply #45. Perhaps the Gen III Super Ten will have what you prefer. They appear to have done this on the Gen III (IV?) FJR.
