I know Super Tenere owners waited a long time to have this feature but I did not like the gear indicator, the gear number disappears every time you pull the clutch, a dash "-" appears instead, why do I need a dash when I´m standing still in a red light, with the clutch in, and I don´t know which gear I´m in? and when riding, you pull the clutch, a dash appears and you have no idea in which gear you are on, you have to release the clutch lever, wait until the gear number appears, and then you know.
I think some getting used to, will have to happen.
Any thoughts or tips?

Re: 2014 ST GEAR INDICATOR

Tips?
Try unplugging the clutch switch under the left cluster.
Otherwise, unless you plan to redesign the bike, get used to it or cover it.

You could be on an earlier bike without one.

For what it's worth, the aftermarket gear indicators work the same way. No indication when clutch is in or stopped.

Piss poor design I say, Yamaha could have done better, I 'm disappointed.
My BMW's will display the gear even when the clutch is pulled in.

Re: 2014 ST GEAR INDICATOR

I don't like the sound of this. Rather than putting a sensor on the shifting drum to actually read what gear is selected, they're instead just inferring the gear by looking at the ratio of wheel speed to engine speed. This can be done entirely in software with no need for any hardware changes whatsoever.

If this is the case, this is an extremely cheapskate move on Yamaha's part.

:D :D And your BMW ABS light is on when the bike is stopped too. Only going out when wheel movement is detected. (assuming there isn't a fault)

While I agree that it would have been nice to see the gear indicator all the time, it's a feature we lived with out for every motorcycle ever built prior to what ever year some brand added it. Like self canceling turn signals or non, this issue requires the rider to pay a little more attention to what you're doing.

I like having a gear indicator on 6 speed trannies. It was pretty obvious on 4 speed trannies what gear you were in, but with the extra gears, most bikes will run the interstate speed quite happily in 5th w/o much extra noise. Sure, a glance at the tach tells you, but it's not like you're way up in the revs either. My old Big Dog would run happily in 4th at interstate speeds and you needed to be over 70 for 6th.

All in all, it's a feature that Yamaha added because people were asking for it and other brands had it. They did it as cost effectively as possible, and probably just like on the FJR, which got these same upgrades a year earlier than the S10. Shared technology/parts across different platforms, imho equals a lower retail price for us.

Bogus comparison. The ABS light goes out as soon as you roll-away and stays off until next restart.

::025:: ::025:: And the gear indicator shows what gear you're in once you're moving too.

The point was that each "issue" is more of an idiosyncrasy than a "problem".

Side note - Don't let a BMW shop pull wheels on a Yamaha. They tend to damage the ABS sensor wire because they are not accustomed to removing the sensor wire to pull the wheel. Then, when they test ride the bike, they don't know something is wrong when the ABS light stays on after the key cycle of the indicator lights. And don't notice it while riding.

They're common reply to that is " They all do that" :D :D

I don't know if it fits the definition of a "problem", but a gear indicator that only works when moving is definitely not as useful as one which works all the time. The two major reasons for having a gear indicator are to tell you when you're in high gear (so you don't do phantom upshifts) and to confirm you've engaged first gear at a stop. With the Yamaha design, you only get the first of these.

Re: 2014 ST GEAR INDICATOR

And yet, somehow we all survived with out the feature for so many years!

When I took my endorsement test on my '40 HD Knucklehead chopper with the 18" over springer front end, rigid frame and mechanical drum brakes, one of the first things the instructor did was tell me to put the bike in neutral. Then ask me how I knew it was in neutral. I looked him in the eye like he was a moron and said "I let the clutch out and the bike didn't go anywhere." :D

Re: 2014 ST GEAR INDICATOR

The gear indicator works like your brain. It is not a switch on the tranny watching the gears it is a calculation done by the computer. RPM vs SPEED that tells it what to indicate. With the clutch in there is no way it can tell just like your brain. But my brain can remember what gear I was in so I don't need fancy electronics. Snake Oil Electronics sell bikes for novice riders.

Re: 2014 ST GEAR INDICATOR

Give peoplel 10 more features and there are ten more things to have a moan about..

The only time I really need one is a top gear indicator, So if it says 6 when I am motoring along I'm fine with it. If I am accidentally in 2 when pulling away from the lights I find that I still pull away from the lights.

And to all you whiners, Any dash display is taking your eyes off the road. They are all bad.

YAMAHA should be shot for not supplying a heads up display unit for your helmet. The cheapskates!! :D

[edit .. forgot the libertarian bit]

And the law enforcement officials in Guveerrnmint should be sternly talked to for requiring you to take your eyes of the road in the first place. ::024::

I have the aftermarket GI Pro gear indicator and yes, it does that because there's no gear position sensor on this bike, but that's really a bush league thing for Yamaha to integrate a gear indicator on the display and not add a gear position sensor. I have a '13 FJR which shares the same LCD display with the new S10 and the gear indicator works the way it should, it's on at all times.

Well put. The necessity of having a gear indicator is certainly debatable and I'd be the last one to trade my bike for the new model to get this feature, but if you're going to add one, at least do it right.

ECO indicator, part-time gear indicator, LCD tach, ugly instrument cluster.... the more I hear about this new ES, the less it appeals.

Jeeez, that's a big leap from gear indicator to ABS light, no?

I won't comment of the ABS checking function as I suspect you know the story.

@Big Blu - We're just whining about some pretty trivial stuff, huh? :D

@Mingo - Color me surprised then. I had been under the impresion that the '13 FJR did the dash thing when stopped too. That is news to me. And does make one wonder why there is a difference between the two, as much is shared in hard parts between the '13 FJR and '14 S10.
