Re: She be melting

Maybe try tinting the lower portion of the screen? Could probably just spray paint it.

I will be getting a windscreen adjustment bracket so I will wait to take permanent action until I know my "final" windscreen position. For now I will line the lower section of the screen with blue painters tape.

You should be honored. You gotta park JUST right and the stars must literally be aligned, for that to happen.

Yep, you must be special. :)

Re: She be melting

my gauge got some action from this... get a cover for your windshield or make one. Time to pull out the sewing machine.

Re: She be melting

Seen the same on VStroms, FJRs, ST1300 and other bikes with windshields. Forgot which but one even melted a gauge face.

Even a piece of white paper on the "dash" prevents it.

Optically correct plastics + sun + angle = melted dash. They act like a magnifying glass, seen it with BMW's, Honda's, pretty much all makes of newer bikes. I just keep a hand towel in the tank bag, and throw it over the dash when I park.

Alternatively, the bike is too clean. It only takes a minor film of dirt to prevent this from occurring. Not for everyone, but let's just say I'm unlikely to ever experience this issue.

Interesting perspective, though this bike had 160 total miles on it (now just over 200), hardly time to build up the defensive film :)).

Probably less of a film and more of a caked on layer..............
It's good to knock a layer off now and then. I clean the bike, but have yet to wash it in 43k miles. ;D If I have time to wash it, I have time to ride it. Guess which wins out in that comparison?

No wonder my bike hasn't burnt itself.

You never hear about this on BMW's. Maybe it's because they are always parked under the umbrella's at Starbucks or indoors at the detail shop O:)

ha ha yes you do. GSA's do it. Touratech make a metal panel that protects the dash.

Re: She be melting

Reviving this thread because it happened to me again yesterday. It's happened before, but yesterday's event seems to have doubled the several melt spots on the front shroud or instrument cover or whatever the pieces are called. It got to a balmy 88 F degrees and all day sunny. I have an adjustable windscreen bracket that may have made it worse - tilted up and back from the stock position.

I found a soft helmet bag in the garage that fits the OEM screen nicely and has a draw string to cinch it down so that hopefully it won't blow away (when parked, not ridden).

I'm thinking that some kind of gradient window tint would be a more permanent solution. May have to cruise the auto parts stores.

Re: She be melting

You are talking about a simple but effective way to shade the bottom part of the windscreen to block sunlight from "focusing" onto the dash panel in front of the instruments. Is it the top of the windscreen focusing down or the bottom area focusing the sunlight in? I am thinking about masking off the inside bottom 1/3 or so of my windscreen, giving it a light sanding with 200 grit sand paper, wiping it down with 90% isopropyl and hitting it from the backside with some flat black Krylon. I will get it lined up with the top edge of the instrument cluster so you really have to look to see it. I will let you know how it turns out. If it goes to crap I was going to buy a taller windscreen anyway, so no big loss.
