Re: Melted Tenere

My MRA Vario has the bottom third of the screen painted an opaque black. Perhaps this is why.

A safe bet that is. Being a male, I prolly wouldn't have made the connection. :lamp:

This has also happened on 800gs and 1200gs melting or deforming the plastic speedo or odo lens to the point the needle is no longer free to work.

Best solution is to throw a small towel in the cockpit when parked in direct sun. I know this isn't always practical.
Yes I have seen this too. Lay your riding jacket over your windshield to keep the rays at bay works for me.

Hey Spasm,

Normally we don't see sunshine either. In fact, it was snowing in Calgary today!!

Haven't seen the sun since...well, since it melted me bike on the one and only nice day last week.

A strange thing happened yesterday. I rolled the Tenere out of the garage onto the driveway while I got all else ready for a ride. I happened to notice that the angle of the windshield with respect to the sun was focusing [magnifying] the sun onto the piece of plastic in front of the instrument cluster. Yes, indeed, it was melting the plastic!!

I have the Madstad adjustable windshield mount and it was in the full upright position, slightly forward. I'm not sure if the stock mount would do the same thing but it's something to watch out for.

Yes, I also have had some melting of that spot with my windshield and the Wasp bracket. I cut out some black plastic pieces to cover that area (like you make numbers for dirt bikes in competition) so hope those don't melt too. I'm gonna put my gloves in that spot when leave it in the sun too just in case.

Re: Melted Tenere

I wonder if putting some strips of black electrical tape across the bottom 1/3 of the windscreen would effectively stop this. I use electrical tape on the top of my face shields to block early morning sun and late afternoon sun so maybe found another use for it.

I wouldn't advise on a rag over the dash.. The rag will just catch fire and you will have a lot of explaining to do for the claims..

The melting happens on numerous bikes and I've seen it on Stroms, FJRs, BMW, plus Aprilia.

The rag will be fine. It takes a lot more to ignite than what it takes to soften plastic.

Re: Melted Tenere

This happened on my F800GS...Touratech makes a new surround to cover the flaw, so it must not be uncommon...

It also happened on my old RC51...poor old gal...that was her only blemish...

Both had aftermarket windscreens which may have been a contributing factor....or just blame it on solar flares....the sun is getting stronger...lots of
materials no longer hold up in the sun like they used to in the good ol days...

Re: Melted Tenere

This appears to be a rather common occurence on many bikes. I had a Honda PC800 that had the melted dash too.

I used to cover the windshield with my Jacket, or put a white cloth on the dash. Even better yet, park it out of the sun, if possible.

Or, as EricV suggests, just don't wash it. The dirt will refract the light and reduce it's potential impact!
