I wouldn't even think about getting an "updated" version. You're right, Yamaha can't do all the things people want them to do at its current price point. When I say that the current Tenere is perfect for/to me . . . . I mean it. Speaking of the FJR. It started, sort of, as the XS Eleven. Then came the FJ1100 followed shortly by the FJ1200. Minor improvements from the FJ11 to 12, but it ended up more refined. Which we use to describe Gen1 v. Gen 2 Teneres.
The FJR is the Tenere in relation to its evolution from the FJ12. All the electronics, water cooling, and drive shaft. But the T-12 and FJR are not really close to the same otherwise. Both bikes have ES. But the spring rates and such are totally different. A lot of our secondary roads beat the crap out of the FJR, regardless of settings. My son won't follow me down some. The T-12 doesn't even blink.
The T-12 has plenty of power for 95% of us. It has enough to get me in trouble, the FJR has enough to get me in jail. When I first got her, I was trying to ride her like am FJ/FJR. Realized I was shifting when I really didn't need to. Some of y'all don't like her gearing, but it's fine for me.
In my opinion, Yamaha will transplant the motor and electronics out of the MT-10, and call it the Tracer 10 GT. 'Cuz be honest, 99% of us use her as a GT, not a desert crosser; TABASCO being part of the 1% that will/can motocross her. And using that motor, and associated electronic safety features, pretty much takes care of what y'all have been asking for.
So, would I spend $21,000usd on a new Tenere? Not just no, but F no. I got the only perfect one as it is.
