Discontinuation of the S10?

As much as I appreciate the CP3, this route will most likely end up with a chain. My S10 replaced a well loved FJR for added versatility.
The driveshaft was a key factor in my choice. Low mileage S10's got tremendous value for the money. A chained T9 will not get to my wallet.

Yamaha nailed the middle weight with the T7. Low tech, well priced and offroad biased.
Personally, I'd love to see Yamaha filling the lightweight "dual purpose" blind spot. I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on a modern bike from Yamaha to replace my DRZ400.

The next Super Tenere of my dream would simply be a modernized version of the current formula.
(As reliable, as well balanced, comfortable, low tech, a bit lighter, better fuel consumption)

Finally dumping the twin cylinder1200 to bad they didn’t do that years ago.
If it comes with decent headlights, tubeless tires and cruise control I might be interested.
So you’re not a fan then? Personally, I think the 1200 twin cylinder motor is a cracker, OK, so Yamaha could have developed it quite easily to match the BMW GS motor and lost a little weight too, but if I was thinking of going around the World or riding to Tierra del Fuego from Alaska and then ride back, I would want a reliable, bullet-proof bike and the S10 is just that. Still, we are all different and the 900 triple is a great motor and it will be much lighter and I may well take a look when it finally emerges. I would have loved a slightly de-tuned MT-10 motor and a decent size petrol tank in and adventure type bike for the virtually 100% tarmac that I ride on.

If they go the MT-10 route, I don't think they will detune it. Not if they want to compete head-to-head with the all the other "cool-kids". Puting a shaft on it shouldn't be an issue since they shafted the FJ easy enough.

Many manufacturers, KTM, BMW, Triumph and soon Harley participate in both the 800-900cc and 1200cc adventure bike classes. If there is indeed a 900cc Ténéré on the way, I don’t think that necessarily means there will be no 1200cc entrant. Most of the rumors are calling it a 900 Ténéré, not a “Super” Ténéré.

I cant see them doing an MT10 based Tenere. That engine comes from the R1 its too old now. If you look at this forum and the avg age of the owners here what would you say 50yrs?. Plus alot on here after the warrenty runs out they will do their own servicing to a point. The only spares bought will be air filters and brake pads. They will not PX it after 2 yrs when the warrenty runs out. The dealers make no money. Thats BMW's business model. You cant make a shaft bike under a certain weight which is the main reason people of a certain age change their bike. The amount of people with the skills and balls to ride this type of bike off road is a niche market. The S10 is too reliable thats why owners keep them so long. It appeals to to few people. Manufactures want sales and moduler products. The CP3 and CP2 engine model bikes fulfill that. I only see them growing the size of both engines.

Well, yes, the MT-10 motor is a few years old now, but Yamaha have updated it and made it Euro 5 friendly so it’s going to be around for a while yet. Suzuki have their launched their 1000cc sports tourer with with an evolution of their K5 motor which is at least 17 years old. You mention the average age, and of course you are right there, but there are many of us who never venture off blacktop and many Adventure bike owners have no intention whatsoever of going off piste on the dirt. Regarding power, yes, more than, let’s say 100bhp is largely irrelevant and most bikes and cars will never, ever have their power utilised by their riders and drivers but, lots of people like to have it is their right hand, just ask DirtDad of this parish!
So, will Yamaha ever build an MT-10 motored adventure bike? I very much doubt it when the 900 triple is newer, lighter and more fuel efficient, but I can dream!

I never knew I needed 160hp. But the cool vs warm weather performance of my SAS has convinced me that 160HP is more like a minimum requirement.

Yamaha is notorious for using engines for many years.

And the EURO 5 thing is going to be key. An engine that passes and performs well. Yup, to Yamaha (and me) that's a keeper.

Maybe the age is naturally doing what everyone wants in the comments (Yamaha is probably laughing there butt's off) ............... The lowest priced, least amount of electronics, shaft drive, tubeless wheels, basic big ADV bike on the market today. LOL :D

Im not a total expert on every new bike, but look at the rest....... most (all) are more expensive, some have tubes, many have chains, most have a ton more sophistication and electronics. Now compare that to the new 23 Tenere.... Seems exactly what "many" customers want.

-Least expensive
-Tubeless
-Shaft drive
-Basic electronics (compared to all the new bikes on the market)
-Exceptional reliability

What else do people want ? LOL (ADV crowd want?)

When many new bikes are $20K-$25K and loaded with tech, the new 23 Tenere for $16K looks pretty awesome for a new bike. (If you DON'T want tech). It looks as if the 700 is somewhat proving that.

IMOP, if this new 900 is taking the place of the 1200 that would be a hard NO from me. Not interested in a street touring bike with a triple engine. Not interested in tubes or chain.... Im sure MANY riders will absolutely love it ! And that's why motorcycles, and the 'ADV' world is so awesome ! Everyone can get what they want, do what they want, and go where they want..... How cool is that ! !

I rarely reset my gas mileage and had to grin when I saw the estimated mileage of 43. That is EXACTLY what mine is showing over the last couple years. (Granted it goes up in AZ, and down in IL with altitude differences).

I bought a new 2021 last November due to the rumor of the bike’s discontinuation. I am glad to see the 2023 info as support and interest in the bike will continue. I am on my fifth S10 beginning with my Blue PDP 2012 bike.;) It fits me great and is dead stone reliable with little maintenance needed other than the basics.

Thanks for sharing Bob.

We've done this "Is it canceled?" question/debate every single year since probably 2013. Different year and same answer is that we won't know till the company officially says it.
