I wouldn't even think about getting an "updated" version. You're right, Yamaha can't do all the things people want them to do at its current price point. When I say that the current Tenere is perfect for/to me . . . . I mean it. Speaking of the FJR. It started, sort of, as the XS Eleven. Then came the FJ1100 followed shortly by the FJ1200. Minor improvements from the FJ11 to 12, but it ended up more refined. Which we use to describe Gen1 v. Gen 2 Teneres.

The FJR is the Tenere in relation to its evolution from the FJ12. All the electronics, water cooling, and drive shaft. But the T-12 and FJR are not really close to the same otherwise. Both bikes have ES. But the spring rates and such are totally different. A lot of our secondary roads beat the crap out of the FJR, regardless of settings. My son won't follow me down some. The T-12 doesn't even blink.

The T-12 has plenty of power for 95% of us. It has enough to get me in trouble, the FJR has enough to get me in jail. When I first got her, I was trying to ride her like am FJ/FJR. Realized I was shifting when I really didn't need to. Some of y'all don't like her gearing, but it's fine for me.

In my opinion, Yamaha will transplant the motor and electronics out of the MT-10, and call it the Tracer 10 GT. 'Cuz be honest, 99% of us use her as a GT, not a desert crosser; TABASCO being part of the 1% that will/can motocross her. And using that motor, and associated electronic safety features, pretty much takes care of what y'all have been asking for.

So, would I spend $21,000usd on a new Tenere? Not just no, but F no. I got the only perfect one as it is.

Don’t think I would. During my recent Pyrenees tour , 3 of the other guys were on new / pretty new GS1200’s. They had a ton of gadgets. It made no difference to the daily enjoyment though. I did come home with gadget envy , I’ve spent a bit of time looking at the Africa twin adventure sport. Plenty of gadgets/modes there , less power than we’re proposing but I’m struggling to see how much I’d actually bother with them after the initial playtime wore off.

Thankyou guys for your answers.

Don't worry about digressing, we do it all the time. We like to provide the moderators with some entertainment.
Extended digression, Tenere is a Tuareg word for desert. An appropriate term these days as we search for accessories since several major manufacturers have discontinued many Super Tenere goodies.

question, if they came out with a new ST next year, other than just all of us talking about it. Would anyone sell their current Tenere and buy the new one ?

(BTW, my message count is a creepy number, LOL)
if it would be as bulletproof as the current one I would upgrade. But that same bike would cost something like €27.500 overhere I guess…

As a former owner of 4 Super Teneres, I can say I would not go back. I've crossed over and I'm now afflicted with the need for high performance. I don't believe Yamaha has any interest in creating a high performance bike. My KTM, so far, has been more problem free than any of my 4 Teneres. So the need for reliability is completely satisfied with KTM. Shaft drive sounds nice, but not enough for me to go back to an updated Tenere with only adequate performance.

If Yamaha would have updated the bike back in 2019 I'd probably would have bought one and would have been completely happy with it. They didn't, I've found a whole new level of riding enjoyment.

Thanks Yamaha for forcing me out of the nest. I appreciate it more than I ever thought possible.

This gets kicked around with the many Tenere riders I know.... I wanted to get a "for fun" idea on your thoughts.... Let's ALL agree that we each use this bike in different ways, ride different places, and we all have different expectations..... With that said, we are all current Tenere owners. If Yamaha surprised us all with a new Super Tenere 1200 or 1300 what would be your thoughts ?

So this doesn't get to crazy, lets just say its Yamahas version on maybe a KTM 1190 with shaft drive and all the modern electronics.. It's the NEXT generation of the Super Tenere. Updated parallel twin, like we have now, (but heavily updated).... It would have more power and electronics, some people might agree that some of these new electronics are for "safety"... Some would argue with that, but it would come with that stuff.....

All new bike, with shaft, and upgraded every other part with a new price of $20-$21K+

Other than just reading about the new bike, would any of us want to go out and drop $21K on the new Super Tenere ?

My gut tells me that the overwhelming majority of current owners would NOT. That brings up competing for the untaped market that is also looking at everything else out on the open market. Has Yamaha done enough to promote and support this segment to try and slice into this very competitive segment? (enough to over come the development cost)?

Someone recently brought to my attention that the new 22/23 big adventure bike reviews on You-Tube don't even evaluate ANY Super Tenere 1200. Ive watched 5-6 reviews and they have 4-5-6 new bikes, no Super Tenere...... How might this be hurting the future brand ? Does the 'inside' industry already know its being discontinued permanently?

I would be very interested in a completely redesigned 'modern' Super Tenere. Im personally not interested in the 700 for many reasons. Hard to find, over priced, and if I load it all up with back woods BDR gear, its underpowered for long highway use with 'plenty of power' (FOR ME)
I ride my 1200 like a 450 motocross bike off road anyhow, so no one can tell me its to big off road.

Look at the FJR, look at its past production projections.... I think you can plug in the model XT1200Z instead of FJR and it is, or will be the same thing...... I believe all we need to do is look around at different Yamaha models, the writing is on the wall.....

Highly unlikely, but let's see it first. Lots of other bikes on my new bike wish list.

A hint of what Yamaha May upgrade, if they keep the Super Ténéré, is the announced upgrades to the 2023 T7. Color TFT, bluetooth, multiple ABS modes, etc.

What the T7 really needs is a proper sized tank as standard and yes switchable ABS. Then it will be fit for purpose. When the S10 came out it was fit for purpose as standard. To me the real price of the bike is being hiden by way of offering upgraded versions of what it should have been in the first place. People riding a bike like the T7 will be focused on where they are going not the colour dash and blutooth. Mostly they will be thinking about how much gas they have left.

The 1290 is famous for having broken the limits, of any other Adventure….but, I don't think there is a need to go looking for that limit….the power is addictive. It's like Sildenafil….push the limits further…..until the limit finds you….Take that power easy…is time those tires last several more miles…Take care….

My best friend has had 4 brand new BMW R1200 and 1250GS since 2010. His love of the GS started from when I loaned him my R1150GS and now he has owned every GS since then. That’s fine, but I moved on from BMWs niggling little faults and flakey powder coating and yes, I know not every BMW has these issues, but mine did and it left it’s mark. I like the GS and I loved the telelever front end but I couldn’t live with the issues that I experienced.
So, as far are the gadgets are concerned, do I really need a TFT screen where I need to enter menus and sub-menus just to choose the level of heat in my grips? Can I spare the time my eyes are off the road to adjust the suspension on the fly? Do I really want to to put up with flakey powder coating and the much reported keyless ignition? The answer, for me, is a resounding “no”. My pleasure is actually riding my bike and going places and enjoying the country and countryside that I ride through. My friend has actually had 2 really narrow squeaks through trying to access the menu he wanted while riding. His wife, my oldest friend, was on the pillion at the time and thanks to her presence of mind, accidents were averted. He has gone back to the dealership he bought it from for help and tuition, the sales people and technicians were less than helpful as they fumbled their way through the menus. No, I want ABS, clear, legible information of speed and mileage and cruise control for those long motorway stints, reliability and a good standard of finish. I think I’ll be keeping my S10 for a while yet.

Funny, I get up early tomorrow to do the 27K mile service and have my tire swapped out. It made it 6K miles. A new record.

I don't feel that I ever come close to pushing the limit with that bike. I'm not a "high speed" guy. Extraordinarily rare for me to come anywhere close to tripple digits. I doubt I've done it 5 times in my life. I don't think it takes any skill to ride fast in a straight line and I'm just not interested in going that fast. It's the jaw dropping acceleration, the wheelie-ability, and the cornering that has me so addicted.

A bit frightening to see triple digits and wheelie in the same sentence.

I didn't see anything about cruise control. I forgot the detail that the '23 T7 will also come prewired for a quick shifter and has new hand levers that are more damage resistant.

Not that bad. 4th seems to be my highest gear to get the front wheel up. Those are usually back on the ground at under 80 MPH. Triple digits would inspire all contact surfaces on the ground. But again, I don't like to ride that fast in general.

Great thoughts in there. Yeah, I'd at very least look at it fairly. For me it's been the ideal bike for my purpose and it serves me perfectly for short or long rides. As you mentioned I'd probably hang on the "safety" features, but I wouldn't sacrifice shaft for anything after a lifetime of chains. Equivalent or greater power only. My current one is my 3rd and it's a year old w/YES so I'm set regardless of Yamaha's plan. Got it due to concerns of cancellation and wanted a new one. Not that either of the previous ones wouldn't, but this one will last the rest of my riding time if nothing newer/better comes to fruition.
