So, here they are at 3 months and 5000 miles. Retired this set last week, I would have liked to replace them a week or two before that. I tried to run them at yamaha specs (33 and 42).
Probably 2500 of the 5k was lanesplit commuting (near san fran - east bay), 2000 super slab, 500 dirt and dirt-like. I like to accelerate hard and brake hard, I love bouncing this bike between lanes so I think I'm pretty hard on tires, usually just me (250-275 lbs) and 50ish pounds of tools, laptop, lunch, etc.
I got bought a second set of the same AX-41s front and rear, I will run these about 5k miles then it'll be getting into wet season so I'll go a little more road based until next spring (~February-March around here). So obviously I'm pretty happy with them. I like their feel on pavement although I wouldn't ever describe the ride as smooth and they definitely have that 4wd truck whirr. On dirt, grass, gravel, mud, snow (2-3 cm atop pavement / dirt / gravel) they are like effing velcro. I'm not much of a dirt dude, so I want the best dirt tires I can have without giving up too much road performance (I came from a 2002 honda vfr).
Note on the front the distinctly triangular shape the center blocks have taken on, so the first edge that hits the ground wears less than the second, I guess that makes sense, most front wear from braking. Note also how the first edge in this pic shows a bit of flexing of the rubber I think (the crescent shape on the top of the center blocks...)
Here's the rear, pretty square as expected. The picture doesn't show just how flat it is although if you look at the row of knobs right where the "B" is (or any of rows near the top of the tire you can kind of see that the blocks have a distinctly triangular shape and that the height of the center blocks is like half or less than the ones near the edge).
The new ones feel SO round after wearing these into this shape. Turn in on a new set of tires is always fun.
And then finally, here is another one from a slightly different angle and to show a little perspective as to how much tread remains (rear). The rear does not seem to show any of the 'crescenting' that the front did. Using the key as a unit of measure, the height of that the middle of that block converts to about 5-6mm.
I do think it's especially cool that you can still read the writing on the tire after 5k miles. If the bottom half of that picture had adventurecross not cut off and a little more centered I might send it to bridgestone. Like this one but centered and stuff:
Anyway, that's whats up with my A-41's.
