What in the Hell does using a Ram mount constitute us as being a Poser anyway? This I am a little confused about!!! I haven't had the time to upload and memorize every road in the world into my mushy brain, therefore I use a robust Ram mount for my GPS.
A poseur would be one who looks to his GPS to see if a road goes anywhere, while an adventurer would explore said road just because. ::26::

Poser...

A true adventure rider has ram mounts on his crash bars, rear frame near the buddy pegs, AND a GPS mount. Like me.

Whoops, no wait, just checked the poser list again. Apparently I'm a triple poser just for the Ram mount infraction alone. Wow, I suck. I'm going back to clarinet shopping.

Crap! Now I find myself secretly thinking about how I can accumulate more Poseur Points. I think I'm going to put some loud pipes on my SuperT....maybe a little chrome.

Ooooh! Ooooh! I'm going to get a Yamaha tatoo and grow me a pony tail. Then I'll be cool.

If i see another picture of some douche bag standing on the pegs on a smooth dirt road, I'm going to buy a Harley and throw away my protective gear.

I'm going to make a list of douche bag things, right here. No offense to some of you- ;D

1. Standing up for a photo on a smooth road.
2. Painted skid plates.
3. Grip tape, anywhere.
4. Dakar stickers on your bike, unless you are racing in it.
5. Aluminum protective pieces made by touratech.
6. The word Farkle.
7. Buying a premium motorcycle and then inquiring about using cheap oil.
8. Referring to "Long way around" or Nick Sanders for any reason.
9. RAM mounts.
10. ADV stickers all over your crap.

What else?
Lets see here,
1. I don't stand up on smooth roads for pictures.
2. No painted skid plate.
3. No grip tape , don't even no what it's used for.
4. No Dakar stickers
5. No Touratech aluminum anywhere.
6. Don't use the word "farkle" I don't no how to spell it.
7. No Super Tech oil in my bike.
8. I started reading the Long Way Around book and didn't like it very much.
9. No RAM mounts on anything I own.
10. No ADV stickers on any of my stuff.

I Know I'm not a MX Poser, Been racing MX for 40 years.

I'm working on not being a Poser on my Tenere.

I'll try harder next summer.

eemsreno, looks like you may be one of the few "non-posers" on this site.

I don't think any of us are Posers , Some folks just didn't grow up riding in the dirt, The Super Tenere just could be the best bike ever built, and everyone should own one whether they ride off road or not. I think the design and superior handling of the Tenere would surprise folks that were willing to try riding them off road and they might really get the bug to try it more and more.{It's addictive you know} I do think everyone should practice riding in the dirt at least on a small bike just to sharpen their skills. As for me I think I have contracted some kind of disease where I can't get enough off road riding with my Tenere now, especially if my son Eric is with me, we just get in deeper and deeper and can't be fulfilled. (til I'm found dead on the trial somewhere some day)

By the way that MX picture of me is a few years old but I did ride on that same track last Thursday with Eric. They removed that jump and turned the track around in the other direction.
Eric didn't take any pictures of me that day but I got some of him. This is a smaller double in this picture but I could jump it just fine too. I've been slowing down a lot in the last couple years on the MX tracks because of a bad shoulder. It wasn't even hurt from riding a bike, {rollerskating} of all things.

No bags, no gear, what was this, in the back yard?
;)

I'm a total poseur. So much so that I just went ahead and set up the S10 for my wife. (Please Lord, let her fall in love with it!) I'll just go look for some used crusier to pass the time with and ride to the coffee shop.... three states away. Ah heck, what am I saying? Three states away is only about 30 miles from here. Make it 5 states away. :D

Motorcycling has more of an us vs them attitude than any other recreational activity I can think of. It's too bad but to a certain degree it's understandable. It does get a little interesting when there is an us vs them within the same sub-community, such as GS vs all other adventure riders.

I'm with you on the small dirt bike being great for sharpening skills. My wife taught me that when she convinced me to get her a TTR-125, a bike I said was way too small for her. After all, at that point she had already owned an XT350, and a Super Sherpa. But her bike handling skills improved dramatically with that little bike. I was stunned at how well she kept up with me on my 520cc bike. Small bikes are an invaluable learning aid.

Now back to the thread. ...you poser.

I'm really confused by this thread. New to S10's by definition I'm a dead set poser except for stickers, I hate them. But I have RAM mounts on my Road King and occasionally stand on the footpans on tarred roads (which isn't that easy to do). :D

Maybe we should start a credentials thread where we can display to others why we aren't posers. I am sure that there will be room in this new thread for those of you who would like to attack individuals on whether or not they are posers.

I don't pretend to be a tremendous big bike off-roader, and I just refuse to jump a double, but I ride. This year from March until about two weeks ago I rode about 14k miles(multiple bikes). This was pretty good as I put in 400 extra hours at work from February until June. I have done two iron butts on this bike in the first 12k of its life, and hope to see more long range off-paved riding. I also did a 140 mile enduro ride on a 1969 DT1 Yamaha, and kept good pace, holding off guys on modern equipment and even crossed a plowed field in second gear wfo. I wore hunting boots.

I guess the message I am getting at is that you fall into one of two categories (with sub categories to those) of either you are a rider, or you are not. If you brag about having put more than one tank in your bike in one day as if it is a huge accomplishment, :D If you put down other's gear for not being of "x" quality (not on adequate protection, flame away although I could be in the sights from time to time) or their bike for not being the right brand (HD are exempt, piss on them all you will), you are just as big of a dick as the guy bragging about the 150 mile day. I won't be the guy rocking the $2000 Klim suit unless I get it for $200, and stickers are not my deal, protection (condoms or crashbars) is good insurance, and riding on paved roads with the xt12z is pretty damn rewarding. But I won't fault the guy who does buy the Klim, unless he acts better than me. In the end, ::021::

C'mon... Let's all admit it, guys... ::020::

*ANYBODY* who posts on an internet forum just *HAS* to be a poseur/poser. We all are. Just have to be.

Well, except for Bloodline, of course. :D

No reason to be ashamed, right? ::017::

Not picking on autoteach...just the general shitty spirit of this thread.

I wave at Harley riders, scooter drunks. bicyclists, grandma's rocking on their front porch, farmers on their tractors.....you get the idea. I don't get it why someone has to look down on others because they're not riding their APPROVED brand of machine or wearing too much or too little equipment. Now it seems that even if I were to buy the "right" type of machine I need to carry a resume with me to prove whether or not I'm "worthy" of some label (I'm a real ADV rider by GOD....scratch-fart-spit). Get over yourselves guys....ride your effing machines and try to have a little FUN!! ::001::

I thought the whole point of the thread is that we're:
#1 - making fun of ourselves for some of the silly things we do
#2 - making fun of the very attitude of superiority some have that you mention here.

I don't care what anyone else rides - my two most frequent riding buds (a Street Triple and a KLR - we call ourselves The Ugly Headlight Club) always have a blast. And we constantly make fun of each other (and ourselves) - the Street is always pristine and he drives a BMW 535 so we have a blast with that, the KLR guy is classic cheap, and I have the Whale Foreskin gear. But we all take riding seriously and respect each other's abilities.

We are a diverse little group: KLR guy is a redneck with 4 kids, Street Triple guy is a successful artist and foodie-type, and I work 70 hours a week in an auto dealership service department. Riding, a nice drink, and a decent cigar are what we have in common - that and three relatively twisted senses of humor - make for great days on the road.

I think some are missing the sarcasm in a lot of these posts.

I think you're absolutely correct. Sarcasm is easily lost in print. However, one think is for sure, there are some really up-tight folks around here.

Dang, I thought this whole thread was tongue-in-cheek. I'm such a poser for not realizing we are supposed to be serious here. Back to selling my bikes again. :'(
