And speaking of moto-cross...
Unfortunately, I can't ride MX any longer. Two complete titanium/ceramic hip replacements, two bad knees that neither of which has any cartilage left, a back broken in 1983 and then re-injured twice after, one very bad ankle, etc., and the weight gain that piled up after all the surgeries, have all conspired to make it all but impossible for me to ever ride an MX bike ever again... But that doesn't mean I'm still not actively involved in the sport. Far from it, as I love it, and all racing too much.
These days I have a bunch of vintage CZ's, and an old buddy and competitor, Wade Woodall, rides 'em for me in vintage events. You can say I ride vicariously on the track through him. Wade and I raced each other in local events for years, but he was always better than I was, and he even competed in some Supercross events and the AMA 500 National series back in the early '80's. As such he was the perfect choice to pilot my "Time Tunnel Racing" CZ's. We started fooling with this back in 2008, and won the Texas State EVO Championship in years past, but an AHRMA National title always *just* eluded us, primarily because it was always hard to put together a complete season given most of the race events are soooooooo friggin' far from Texas.
However, Wade was determined to win a title this past year, and decided to concentrate on only two classes (in years past he rode 4 classes). Mind you, Wade runs in the "Expert" division in each class - i.e. the very fastest guys - and has often had to race against guys like Chuck Sun, Danny La Porte, Guy Cooper, etc. In other words, there are no *ducks* or posers/poseurs in his classes, and quite often they will lap faster on vintage bikes than the local pros will on their modern bikes! ???
Anyway, we had built a truly trick CZ-125 (also known as our Time Tunnel DG-3) in 2010, so he decided he wanted to ride it in the "Classic 125 Expert" class, and he would use our tried and trusted CZ-250 (team name DG-1) in the "50+ Expert". These are two tough, brutal, hotly contested classes... Two of the most difficult in all of AHRMA. The 50+ because so many fast, fast guys, many of them past national stars, race in it, and the 125 class because we were trying to do it with a CZ. Believe me, *NOBODY* thought we could win races with the 125, much less the National title!
Well, in a nutshell - he did it. Wade won the AHRMA Classic 125 Expert National Championship. He ended up third in the 50+ Expert, but that's only because he crashed and hurt his ankle at one event, and ended up not being able to ride the 250 for that day's event. Had he been able to he would have won both National Championships.
To say I'm proud of him would be a huge understatement. He not only won the title, but won nearly all the 125 races he competed in, and won the title by a staggering amount of points - and all on that 125 CZ that everybody said couldn't win! Here's a few pictures hopefully you'll enjoy, each showing a little about Wade and the bikes...
First, here's Wade with the two mounts he used this season - the 250 on the left, and the 125 on the right.
Here's a pic of Wade getting a little air on the 125 at the final AHRMA race of the season at Rio Bravo in Houston, where he locked up the title...
Another one of our bikes... Our "Museum Bike" center-port Falta, which is only used for displays. The two race bikes from this season are in the background, and the back end of our long-travel "post vintage" CZ-250 is on the left...
Here's the National Championship winning CZ-125 when we were up at Bourbon, MO back in September...
Wade at the pre-grid, on the 125, at Bourbon, MO...
I hope this post doesn't come off like "bragging" from a poser/poseur, but I'm real proud of Wade, and equally proud of my wonderful CZ's, all of which have a phenomenal reliability record and are renowned throughout the AHRMA paddock and series as some of the fastest, best handling bikes out there. As an example, we have been fielding DG-1, our CZ-250, in AHRMA events all over the country, as well as Texas EVO events all over the state, since 2008 and it has *NEVER* failed to finish a moto due to a mechanical failure (he did crash it so bad at Mid-Ohio a couple of years ago that it couldn't finish, but that's because he bent the pipe closed!!! ::025:: ). Not once. And the 125 would have a perfect record had it not had a couple of internal-rotor Motoplat ignitions fail, damn it!!! ::010::
I just thought I'd share a bit of moto-trivia with you guys...
Oh, and BTW, Wade is 51 years old and rides a KLR-650 on the street! ???
Thanks!
