rem and troll,
How bad are the mosquitoes and other biting insects up that way in early July compared to later in August?

From spring thaw till freeze-up the bugs can be pretty intense depending on the year. Early it is mosquitoes and later it is black flies. It really depends on the amount of rain and the habitat that you are traveling in. I am never without bug dope and when camping I always carry a bug shirt in my kit. Biting insects are a part of life here in the north. And, you will need to clean your helmet visor regularly throughout the day while riding - this is bug country ???

Good advice. There is no wind outside tonight, and the mosquitoes were attacking me in clouds. It's variable, but you will always encounter some. Wind helps, and we usually have wind up here. But they can be brutal, so bring lots of Uncle Ben's along. Bring your own. Canada doesn't sell the concentrated stuff. It's wimpy, so bring some. The bugs can be very distracting. R

Do either of you guys have a shop with a tire changer machine? Or do you guys have a hook up that we can go change our tires? Might have some shipped up and flip them on, when I get in town,, or on the way back through going back home..... Ill be on the K60 Scouts and they should hold the miles, but just in case there is damage to the tires, Etc. I'm planing on attending and then heading to Prudhoe Bay, then the long way home... ;D Its 5,000 Miles each way for me... Add a few more for screwing around...

Re: First North American Super Tenere gathering - Whitehorse,Yukon Canada July 2012

Will this be a tent camping event or are there local motels I could stay at? My camping experience is limited to sleeping in a 6x12 enclosed trailer on an air mattress at the racetrack with a bathroom and showers. If tenting, I will need help purchasing the correct survival equipment and will probably sell it after this trip. :)

I may trailer out to northern MN and start my ride from there so I could leave my truck at friends.

If like many MC events, I would guess it is whatever you want to make it. Whitehorse itself has options for both, as do (most) other locations on the way. Some places, tent camping is not recommended due to wildlife (bear), but I don't think that is the case in Whitehorse. Rem?

Re: First North American Super Tenere gathering - Whitehorse,Yukon Canada July 2012

The Honda Dealer has always done my tire work, as I have only owned Hondas to date. They can do pretty well anything. I think Yamaha has that capability as well. I'll check on that. We also have KalTire, TireCraft and Fountain Tire, as well as Canadian Tire. We are a very tired bunch around here.

Regarding accommodations, there is a plethora of government and private campsites, as well as motels/hotels. Whitehorse is a tourist town. I am going to try and get some discounts from local motels. Also, I live about 10 miles south of town in a remote area. I'm probably about 10 minutes of easy riding from the Yamaha dealer. Any of you are more than welcome to pitch a tent anywhere you wish around my place. You are not likely to experience problems with wildlife in the Whitehorse area. This could become a possibility in some of the government campsites along the Alaska Highway, but is still a rarity. Government campsites may be somewhat crowded that time of year. However, if you do not require services, you can camp just about anywhere you want to up here. Just pull off the road a little ways and make yourself at home. There is very little private land up here. 99.9999999999% of the Yukon is federal, or "crown" land. In most areas, the water is still safe to drink. If you know the general area in which you might be camping in the Territory, I can probably advise you further. One note ... if it is extremely dry and a fire hazard warning is in effect, you will not be able to build a fire. That would go for the entire Territory. This is somewhat uncommon, but not unheard of.

This week, with Troll's help, I plan to make arrangements with Yukon Tourism to send travel/tourism packages to any of you who might desire them. I'm hoping to collect a list of names and addresses, and pass them on to Tourism for mailing. They have full packages they put together and will pay for the postage, etc.

We'll get on that right away. In the interim, try this .... http://travelyukon.com

Please feel free to direct any specific questions you might have to me and I'll try my best to answer them. I have set up an alias email for this .... hollywolly1@mac.com. Allow me some time to respond, but I'll do my best. My Internet service has been somewhat abysmal for the past little while, but I think it is on the road to repair. I'm going to try for the third time to post this. R

Re: First North American Super Tenere gathering - Whitehorse,Yukon Canada July 2012

As I think of bits of information that might be useful to all of you, I'll post them here.

Cell phones .... I don't own one and have never used one, but as I understand it, the coverage up here is very poor. Don't count on a cell phone unless you are in the vicinity of one of the larger communities.

Repair work ... I have a fairly large basic plain jane garage on my property, with a modest supply of tools. Power. Any of you are most welcome to use it for any repairs that might be accomplished there.

Snakes ..... we don't have any. At least not the legless kind.

Hospitals .... Whitehorse. Some of the other communities have emergency clinics.

General tourism ... down this year ... markedly I'd say just from observation, probably due primarily to gas prices. This is a good thing as far as crowds go. Lots of bikers coming through. Gas is currently about 5 bucks a U. S. gallon for regular. A bit more for premium.

For those of you who have never been in this neck of the woods, this is truly a wilderness area. I can take you 5 miles from Whitehorse and point you in one of several directions in which you can walk 500 miles or more and never encounter a community or human being. Seriously. There are all the services you might require in and around Whitehorse, and more limited in other communities, but it is by far almost all wilderness. The entire permanent summer population of the Yukon Territory on a good day is about 35,000 people.

The Yamaha dealer has a tire changer and has told me that if he knows about how many bikes are coming and generally what the needs might be he will make sure service tech and supplies are available - he really wants to support this gathering in any way that he can. I am sure that you can ship tires to the Yamaha shop and they will be happy to serve you. I spoke to the owner about this kind of support and he said he is all over it - just needs a bit of warning as to the needs - if there is anything special...

this is gonna be soooooo much fun.....

Great job troll! My experience has been that it you pre-arrange things like this, the dealers are pretty accommodating to providing VIP treatment for people that are on the road. Positive word of mouth is some of the best (and least expensive) advertising you can ever get and will get many fold returns.

:)

Okay, here's what I can offer you as of now. Troll may be able to come up with something more specific.

You can order a Yukon Vacation Planner here: http://travelyukon.com/plan-your-trip/free-vacation-planner

You can phone toll free to speak to a travel counsellor at this number: 1-800-661-0494 ... I tried it and, like most Yukon Government numbers, no one is there. Leave your name and number. if they don't get back to you, let me know and I'll go raise some hell.

YOu can also email them at: vacation@gov.yk.ca

All of this is on the website I sent you before: www.travelyukon.com

Hopefully that will get you started. Let me know if you're not getting results. R

Re: First North American Super Tenere gathering - Whitehorse,Yukon Canada July 2012

No problem, Rod. What's 25 bucks to a rich sumbich like me ????

Maybe you can tell me .... I just picked up three really nice electronic publications from Yukon Conventions Bureau. Nice lady. They are not on their website but she has authorized me to distribute them through the forum for downloading. Do you know how large of a file I could post? The limit for pics says 500 kb. Two of these are about 3.5 Mb. If I can't post them, can I send them to a couple of you guys and then you distribute them to whomever wants them? I would offer to do it but my Internet has been really bad for about a month. I think they are finally looking into it but still not good. We have a monopoly up here regarding phone and Internet, so they don't work too hard on solving problems. If you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing them. Got some good info from the Convention Bureau. If nothing else works, she said we could email her and she would email them back, but would be good if we could do it ourselves. Thanks. R
