Looks like ordering from Tony may be the best option for many.

I am still undecided because of the Tenere's great record so far. I don't think that I have heard any real issues so far. Also I have roadside assistance through the AMA. Tony's prices may have me reconsider.

I rarely buy extended warranties. Like Swagger said, the odds are always in favor of the house. If they didn't have a good profit margin on these things, they wouldn't push them so hard. I've bought bikes where the salesman acted like the sale of the warranty was more important than the sale of the bike. I would bet that they make way, way more on the warranties than they do on bike sales.

Another thing for those of you in Florida to consider; I'm hearing that Florida residents must purchase their warranty from a dealer in Florida. I saw that in the post earlier in this thread that referred to another thread for pricing.

Last I checked ( about a year ago) there's a Yamaha dealer in Cullman, AL that had the 4 year YES for $389. It may be more now I don't know.

I don't think that would hold water forcing you to purchase a extended warranty within 30 days.

I thought you had to purchasse the YES warranty within 30 days of taking ownership.

For the price, I think it's worth it. It doesn't start until after the first 12 months expire.

The dealers I have spoken to say you can buy it from any Yamaha dealer within the 1 year factory warranty.

I have over 1,000,000 miles on a dozen or so Japanese bikes (starting back in the early 70's) and have never needed a extended warranty...yet. Maybe the odds will catch up with me? Nah....no extended warranty for me.

Yeah Devin that's how I've always understood it to be you buy anywhere within the time frame of the factory warranty. Glad it's stiil that way.

I had the extended warranty on my Yamaha Grizzly ATV. The clutch let loose and had to be replaced ( about $800.00). And the motor started to use oil, so they did a complete topend rebuild ( $1470.00 ). I've had snowmobile issues, motor replaced ( $ 4,300.00 ). I kind of like Y.E.S.

This purchase will be my first Yamaha, so I sure hope that your experience is not typical of Yamaha engineering.

In my youth, I was a "if it ain't squeeking, it don't need tweeking" kind of guy, and I did virtually no preventive maintenance on my Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Honda dirtl bikes, and I almost never had to do anything at all to them. Heck, I never even changed the oil! I just added a little every now and then when the crank case started to sound a little dry.

I know better now, and I understand the value the recommended maintenance schedule, but I would hope that that is all that is necessary to ensure many miles and years beyond the Y.E.S. limit before any Y.E.S. type repairs are needed. I don't believe in extended warranties. I believe that if a material failure occurs that is obviously beyond normal wear and tear, that the manufacturer should have the integrity and honor to make it right without me having to pay a fee in advance for that honor. I know that many of you will purchase the Y.E.S. just for peace of mind, and I think that if fine, but it is not for me.

I can't speak for the ATV's but Yammi bikes are top notch. I've owned three and no problems at all you should be pleased with their quality, fit and finish.

Can't comment on these misfortunes, but after 30 years of ownership of Yamaha motorcycles and ATVs (including a Grizzly that works hard) the worst thing that happened to me was a sheared kick-start shaft on a 12 year old 86 TT350 (first model year) and that happened on a cold winter evening. That doesn't say that Yamaha hasn't made mistakes. My 03 WR450 (first model year) was upgraded by me to 04 specs within the first 3 months to avoid any potential woodruff key shearing issues ( 03 lacked starter clutch, added in 04, part was available 6 months into the availability of the 03). This also illustrates that Yamaha is also very quick to make adjustments to subsequent model years. As a 2012 model, 2 model years from the original release, the Super Ténéré should be bullet-proof with proper care and maintenance.

Thanks David. That is what I truely feel like we can all expect, and, unfortunately for Yamaha, it is why they won't get the extra profit margin from me from the purchase of a Y.E.S. It is more principal with me than anything else.

Happy Trails

I agree with the conclusion that the 2012 S10's should be fairly well sorted, but two model-years does not equal one calendar-year. When US S10's ship in May it will be about 11 months from when the first S10 shipped in Europe.

As an extended factory warranty, the YES program is a good deal. Yes, Yamaha makes a pretty good product and yes, they do provide 'goodwill warranty' work, such as ignition switch fix on early RSTDs (that one came with 5 year warranty), ignition switch fix on some FJRs and number one and two exhaust valve ticking on FJRs even though they were off one year warranty.

The big profit (IMHO) on YES goes to some of the more profit hungry dealers who up the price. I will most likely purchase YES when the time comes and I will probably purchase from D&H in Cullman.

I purchased the extended warranty for my GL1800 even though they have a high degree of reliability.

Reason? Just consider the electronics on these machines.

This will be my 6th new Yamaha. My 79 750 triple has some trans issues after warranty, but we have plenty of winter up here to sort out things like that. All the others had no or small issues. I think maybe my XS Eleven needed a left handle bar switch assy.

Bought the 2 yr YES on my FJR, never used it.

My dealer prices it right in line with the better prices posted in other threads. For less than 500 bux I will likely buy. I have yet to read of major issues on this bike, but with all the electronics I think I may go for it. Still have a couple months to think on it. I am keeping my FJR so no telling use and mileage accumulation.

These warranties are a huge source of margin for dealers. Don't be bashful about negotiating, and if they wont, you can buy from one of the forum members that have posted here.

Taken as a whole, the ESC is not a good deal.

For 10 of us who buy the ST....9 will get 5 years with no problems....partially due to miles ridden, preventive maintenance and solid engineering. 1 of us may have serious problems, saving themselves $500 to 800 in repairs.

I'm not gonna buy, hoping to be one of the 9, not the 1.

I always religiously follow mfr maintenance schedules and then some. My car is a BMW and every year I take it to the dealer to go through it with a fine tooth comb, finding and fixing any trouble spots....before I have a problem on the road.
