It appears that there are some on here that are not convinced that the cam chain needs secured before the removal and replacement of the CCT.
Some on here [post #185 Eric V.] say I repeatedly say incorrect information.
The easy way here would for me to just stay quiet and let guys make costly and bad mistakes when they replace there CCT.
Remember I only want to help you out here.

I was hoping another shop would have stepped up and done this but it doesn't look like it was going to happen.

So I sent off a request to Yamaha Dealer Technical Assistance for an explanation of the correct way to just Remove and replace the CCT.

Record Update

THANK YOU FOR USING ONLINE TECH ASSIST. NEED TO FIRST REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER TO PLACE PLASTIC TIE ON INTAKE CAM TO SECURE TIMING CHAIN TO ENSURE ENGINE DOES NOT JUMP TIME WHEN THE TENSIONER IS REMOVED. REMOVE THE TENSIONER. MAKE SURE NEW TENSIONER IS COMPLETELY COMPRESSED BEFORE INSTALLING. INSTALL NEW TENSIONER. REMOVE RIGHT ENGINE COVER. PUSH TIMING GUIDE USING LONG FLAT BLADE SCREWDRIVER TO RELEASE THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER ROD. INSTALL RIGHT SIDE COVER. REMOVE PLASTIC TIE ON INTAKE CAM. ROTATE CRANKSHAFT SEVERA
L TURNS CLOCKWISE. VERIFY TIMING IS STILL CORRECT. IF SO, INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD COVER. THANK YOU, ASHLEY V.

He also called me today to ask why I needed this info.
I personally do not know Ashley or have ever talked to him before that I know of.
He also said that Yamaha is covering this 2012 and 2013 CCT for the next 5 years [Only if it rattles] so you do not need to be in a rush to have this fix done.

And any Shop can call RTA Ashley and feel free to ask him if these are his exact words.
My 2012 @ 16,300 miles is seriously making the CCT noise. It's loud at start up for awhile & noticeable when running blipping the throttle lightly. I noticed it getting worse the past year & now don't even want to ride it after the racket it made the other day.
I really don't want to get into pulling the valve cover which is much more work then the lesser install. Is it true that Yamaha will fix this out of warranty?
I contacted my closest dealer / the service guy I know there & he said they would get back to me if they would fix it out of warranty. I don't have much faith in the dealer or Yamaha doing good. Not sure what to do right now. I'm disappointed. My 09 Vmax had a oil pump recall that was risky business letting someone do. Now this on my next new bike from them which is also risky business getting done.

Joe- Sorry to hear about your CCT woes. Is your dealer/service folks the shop on US 19 near Curlew? I do not trust those guys based on service I received for their warranty work on another motorcycle I used to have. I have had very good service from Cahill's in Zephyrhills & they also have a shop in Tampa. I'm wondering if I should have the CCT replaced on my upcoming valve check service. Just a slight noise on a cold startup near as I can tell but I'm half deaf & not very perceptive when it comes to such sounds.

Joe-Joe - I understand that the noise is annoying and worrying given the reports of of cam chain tensioner problems here... but you needn't worry - keep riding, wear earplugs! There are no reports of failure that I've seen at less than 53,000 miles, two of those I think. Others in the 70's and 80's. So you would be really really unlucky to have it fail at 20,000.

My suggestion - it's coming up for a valve check at 24,000 miles, do it now if it will make you feel better, or just ride till it's due. Try to get the part changed under warranty at the valve check, but if that doesn't work just buy one and have installed by the tech doing the valves. Not too expensive, $200 should cover it. Job done, ride on.

Changed the CCT after 70.000 km during the valve inspection.
I released the CCT from the top, where I gave the top of the chain guard a small push with a screwdriver. The way as in the manual described did not work.
The engine is much more silent, not only during the start procedure.

i called yamaha direct, they got back with me after taking some info down and they will be replacing mine out of warranty. I have to say that Yamaha has some of the best customer service Ive seen. Makes me happy I own this bike again.

a quick update, apparently after a week the bike still isnt ready and they are doing a complete tear down (per the manual, checking TDC and such) to do the cct for my bike. Glad yamaha is footing this bill, yikes.

but the good news is ill get an "oil change" and valve check free...

I replaced mine at 25k mls service, with the new '14 cct. There is definitely an improvement, but the rattle is not gone completely, like some of you reported.
What could be the reason? Is it normal? Should I replace the chain?
FYI, the installation was done by a serious bike mechanic, and he tells me that even though the mileage is low, the chain could be stressed because of the old cct not doing the job properly.
Any suggestions?

It's a tough call on the chain. Here's the deal, there is no spec for the chain. Not to check for stretch, not to identify excess wear, not even a spec for a new chain's length or spacing between rollers. Trust me, I looked both online and in the FSM and the dealer looked everywhere and even called Mother Yamaha in several locations, including warranty and technical support. Nothing.

Realistically, timing chains on modern bikes don't really get that stressed and it's highly unlikely that your chain is suffering any significant wear at 25k miles. When my CCT failed at 82k, I did bitch about the chain, and eventually, it was covered in the warranty parts list during the repair, but only after a long struggle, and only in the end, because they could not provide any method by which to check the old one. Damage, if obvious and found, is a warranty covered issue. Wear, of any kind, is not. The chain is not all that expensive, but it takes some labor to replace. In my case, that was moot, as it was all apart anyway.

With all due respect to your mechanic, I wouldn't even consider replacing the chain at 25k. The motor is a noisy one, especially at start up. You will notice the rattle getting louder and lasting obviously longer well before the CCT actually fails. Had I not be in the middle of an 8k mile trip, I would have had it looked at sooner. Well, that and having had an FJR that ate 4 CCTs and rattled hugely for extended periods w/o ever slipping the chain. Come to find out, the chain on the Super Ten is much longer due to the parallel twin design, so has more potential to slip when the CCT is failing

Thanks guys... I'm just a little worried cause most of the guys who replaced the old cct with the new '14 one, suggest that the rattle is gone. I kind of hoped I'm not the only one.
Anyways, my mech said that he will change it without opening anything, but the clutch cover. I'm not sure how...
If it's a cheap one, I'm gonna do it for the piece of mind.

The '14 CCT has been rattle free so far in my '12. When the Cam chain starts to get loud again I'll probably replace the CCT with a manual one.
