Finally got around to pulling the air box and replacing the air filter at 26k miles or so. I had ordered some spark plugs from the dealer and planned on swapping the plugs too. No surprise about the four plugs, (hey, some people read the manual first!), but I was a bit annoyed to discover that the dealer ordered different plugs from what the shop manual specs. One heat range cooler. IOW, CPR9EB-9 instead of CPR8EB-9. Tried to find out if this was intentional or an error, but couldn't get much from the parts desk dude, other than he could order me the other heat range and it would be here in a week. ::017::

Normally it's not a huge deal to run one heat range off of stock. Typically you want to run the coldest plug you can until it fouls too. I'm wondering if Yamaha changed the spec for the plug due to the E10 being used in the US, but couldn't get that info from the dealer today. I'm just going to toss them in and see how it goes. Probably order the correct heat range next time, if the plugs don't foul. Sooner if they do.

Considering the owner's manual and shop manual suggest checking, cleaning and re-gapping the plugs every 4k miles, I find it odd that the junior engineer that designed the airbox and spark plug access, pretty much failed at making two normal service items readily accessible. 10 screws for the top of the air box?? WTF, did they think it was in danger of coming off in a breeze? My old Ducati 750SS even had a tank prop and clips to remove the airbox cover.

Yamaha seems to sort of suck at air box access. FZ-1, FJR, S10, all kind of sucky in that regard. And then there is the thread retaining compound on the really long coil bolts.

Oh well, I guess I'm done bitching for now. :D Back to the garage to finish swapping the plugs out.

Looks good, but a bit sexually suggestive ;) I take it this is a UK product?

Been riding the last couple of days...was 115* coming home on Monday, and 113* yesterday. We also get a pretty stout wind in the afternoon...I am finally happy with my windshield; I am running the CalSci shorty, and I used some rubber spacers and longer screws on the bottom to kick the shield back at a better angle. I haven't noticed any buffeting around my helmet. I am also running the seat in the high position (only on the road, when I hit the dirt, I drop it back to low, since I only have a 30" inseam).

I had one of those Camel Toe side stand things and it was very poorly designed. The fasteners did not sit flush with the bottom of the side stand enlarger, it sat on the heads of the screws, wore the heads down, became loose and was unable to tighten.. Tossed it.

Has he improved that design? Are the bolt fasteners recessed now?

Today I'm at Romney Cycles in W. Virginia for tires and oil.

I'm now 4800 miles and 14 states in to my 8000 mile trip. Tomorrow I'm off to Maryland and Pennsylvania. AltRider event this weekend then it's time to head home to California after Shanksville for a moment of silence.

Little voice in my head has been telling me to check the final drive oil the past few days, so this morning before commuting I did. I had to add about an ounce...maybe a little more!

I'm 750 miles in now...did my first final drive change at just after 400 and based on the drain I think it had been full. Have been regularly checking for leaks and haven't seen any. Anyone else notice having to top it off after "wetting" with a few rides? I spun the wheel when doing the first change, but it seemed to have a very minor effect.

Another 464 miles today, ended up in Denison, TX. Stopped at a Yamaha/Honda shop in Monroe, LA, looking for some chain lube for my son's Wee Strom. All they had was chain wax, so we passed on that. A friendly salesman checked out my Super Tenere. They had not sold one yet, but had one prospect that was interested in one. If he pulls the trigger, they will try to find him one. We stopped in Yamaha Sport Center in Longview to say hi to Tony, who used to post on this forum. They told us that he normally doesn't hang out at that shop, so we talked to another salesman. Friendly folks there. They had a cool looking blue Super Tenere on the floor and had one Raven in stock also. They also had Bel Ray chain lube, so my son got that.

Looks like one more day of Texas tomorrow before we get into CO. We made good time on some TX backroads. Two lane, 70 mph speed limit and folks travelling at a true 80 mph. Vewwy, vewwy cool! :) (The speed, not the temperature)

It aint hot yet here in Texas so you should be glad it's not July or you both would look like a slice of bread on a motorcycle turning to toast. :)

Have a safe one Fred.

This week I added:
  • Rox Riser block, the 1" Up and 1" Back model (3R-B12PO)
  • Electrical outlet for passenger
  • Switch for the clutch fuse mod

Rox Riser block, the 1" Up and 1" Back model (3R-B12PO). I got a little bend back in my arms, which is a more relaxed stance, better bar position for standing too. Cabling is at the limit here.

Electrical outlet for passenger
The plug end is pulled out for visibility next to the Battery Tender pigtail. The socket is only hot when plugged into the Battery Tender pigtail, which is fuse protected. This is so my passenger can plug in her device that needs charging without interfering with me. You'll notice that the socket bracket is only zip-tied in, which means it's temporary (2-3 years).

Switch for the clutch fuse mod, 'cause switchable is mo' better.

Installed the Healtech Speedohealer and GiPro gear display, with some drama, that's been sitting in the box for a few months waiting for me to get to it. installed a small basket on the pillion area for my 1 gallon hydration jug and plumbed that, replacing the 1/2 gal jug I had on the left pass. footpeg. Re-installed my powered tank bag ring with the replacement unit from Twisted Throttle, ( who rocks!), and re-installed the re-worked seat from Cee Bailey's. We'll see how the higher density memory foam works over the next few days during the Utah 1088 rally.

Scrubbed in a new K60 Scout front too. Had a few moments at 116F where it felt a little loose during the first 20 miles. Hit some dirt and it's much better now.

I just bought it off ebay a while back. The vendor was Podium Superbikes, 43311 Joy Rd., Canton, MI 48187 www.podiumsuperbike.com

They had them listed on ebay for the S10, so I snagged them. Not plug and play, but a plug and play version is not offered by Healtech at this point for the S10.

Had a little trouble finding the correct tach signal wire since I didn't go at things at the suggested ECU connector that's buried behind the relay panel. Well, and Yamaha's oddness of changing the wire colors at a connector didn't help either.
