Besides my Blog Adventuresbyguy.com I have now started a new YouTube channel Adventuresbyguy where I will be uploading videos of this trip and others past and in the future.
My other YouTube channel is XXGUY for bike stuff and some ride videos.
My son has found out that he enjoys editing. 1st video was of a ride to the Devil's Hwy in AZ the 2nd half of that was I70 going over the mountains with clouds covering the tops. 2nd video is at Hyder Alaska and seeing salmon and a bear. Then leaving Stewart on the Canada side.
Subscribe and I will try to put out a video every week or two.

Yeah, the engine braking is one of the reasons that my back brake pads made it well over 20k miles. And I don't do a lot of highway.

I agree. I told Anthony to not touch anything that would reduce the OEM engine braking. I found out on my trip that when in tour mode the engine braking is less. I happened to be in it coming down a gravel road. No big deal... 1st gear and I let the engine slow me down... except it wasn't doing much! Look down... T so I put it in S and instantly it was better. Nice to know!

im a fan of the engine braking of the bike . but my friends don't really like it . they will ask me if my brake light is broken . they can be startled when I slow suddenly and they are not prepared . I try not to do that in heavy traffic as auto drivers are already not watching . don't need to be a hood ornament .

I'm made it a habit to drag my back brake when engine braking for this reason.

IDEEHO stones throw from the IBDR!!!
Two of my last road bikes have been VTwins, Vstrom and VTR1000.My XR650R has alot of that too! Engine brakings benefit in sand is not good but I dont see myself riding the S10 in much deep sand. The engine braking on the S10 is very VTwin like, but has a character of its own I'm finding, and I LIKE that. I dont find the S10 very snatchy and my fueling seems pretty good. I made sure to check/adjust the throttle cables to very little play. I may still get a reflash but im gonna give it some time I think. Im currently trying the clutch switch mod too. The power hit seems in between the feel of the VStrom and the VTR as far as abruptness so no surprises for me! Every bike has its own character that you must adapt to.

Im also not running the rider modes much. I guess with the switch mod you cant. The TCS modes might help more in loose soil conditions but Ive not tested that as of yet. I really like full control of the bike. To me, and im sure ill get some retort, ABS is not needed. If I ever have issues with the pump I will probably delete it. Im going to install a delete switch for sure. Thats just the way I roll!

I did the ABS switch mod. Pics and even the part # for the relay kit from NAPA is there somewhere in this thread. In your prior post above you mention the clutch switch mod???? What is that? On gravel and forest roads I leave everything as is and will be in Sport now. Really technical riding such as rock fields I go to Tour mode.

Not sure what clutch switch mod you are talking about but if it was just jumpering out the clutch switch I am pretty sure someone on this forum years ago figured out that would allow the timing to go way too high in certain conditions or something like that. You may want to dig trough all the old posts and look into that. Not sure I am right on that but I do remember reading something like that on here.

Yah I saw that post by ACV IIRC but ive also seen lots of people who have run the mod for tens of thousands of miles with no issues. Its a mod that was IIRC first used on Hayabusa's to do the same thing. Eliminate the restrictions in gears1-3. Im not too worried!

I'll just go down swinging, by saying there is never a time that you shouldn't dare to touch the front brake. It won't lock up regardless of conditions. If you have enough traction for your rear wheel to do anything, your front brake will do it better. Go to the rockiest, gravely, marbley road you can find, get up to about 50mph, and grab a HANDFUL of front brake and feel what happens. It's a little hard to wrap your head around, especially if you're old like me, and habits are hard to break, but I didn't get the racing resume I have by not always experimenting. And like YOU said, "those who know, know." :)
If you have a "racing pedegree" why do race bikes NOT use ABS??? Try going out on a dirt road and do ABS vs Non ABS panic stops and you will be amazed how much faster you can haul it in without ABS.

I always assumed that it was a weight thing. Race bikes always trying to have a better power : weight ratio. My kid's R6 doesn't have it, and not technically a race bike.

To me. ABS is an insurance policy. For those panic stops in the rain, or even in the dry when you have to brake and turn to avoid grandma. I'm good at braking, and keep it just shy of lock up. But for those day I can't . . . .

Im not saying it has no place for some riders. I just like being in total control of my bike. The only other bike I have had that had ABS was an BMW RT. I prefer NOT to have it but have yet to put a switch on my S10-but will.

That was a big selling point for the RT. It was an '04 and has servos that you could hear when you squeezed the lever. The servos were a known problem at the time. Ironically, it was one of the few things on the bike that didn't fail.

ABS has saved my bacon enough times that I won't buy a bike without it. Not a lot of times, but critical times. Like I said, I'm good at threshold braking. So, if my ABS has kicked in, something unexpected has happened.

I just posted this in oil/fluids. I am reposting here in case you don't go look at that area of the forum. Post your interest there on that thread so I can keep track easier. Link below.
Thanks.

I run AmsOil in my bikes. They state that I can double the manufacturer's stated oil change interval. I have their 10W-40 oil in right now with 13,000 miles on it. I was thinking of getting two test kits if there is a good bit of interest. One for the engine oil and one for the rear drive oil. This would test the oil in real life conditions as you guys know where I rode these miles... if you followed Adventuresbyguy.com! No more opinions or conjecture. I would post the results here.
If not a lot of interest then I will just drain and replace.
Let me know
TG
