Headed out Monday June 1st in a big Penske truck 26footer - moving someone from Iowa to North Carolina. Hated to have to drive the truck but packed the Tenere in all the bedroom furniture.

Can you see it?

Arrived on Tuesday evening around 5pm - unloaded with a crew in 2-1/2 hrs - much faster than packing it.

Stayed till Thursday morning and left from Greensboro towards Mount Airy and then Fancy Gap to catch the Blue Ridge Parkway going South towards Asheville on the Tenere 2 up.

From cold and foggy to sunshine, my wife and I have enjoyed the Blue Ridge Parkway and all it has to offer. From the views to the peaceful twisties from 25 mph to 50 some. Speed limit is only 45 and there's really no need to go any faster... Because you might just be missing a moment.

At the end of August beginning of Sept I have 18 days off. I'll be leaving Fort McMurray, A.B. and heading for Victoria B.C. via Bella Coola B.C. solo. I have always wanted to do this trip. I will be camping and taking pictures along the way. Once I hit the Island I'm not really sure of my route down. I would like to use the logging road system but as this trip all centers around going to visit my parents I may just book it straight down the hwy.

Right now the only part of my trip that is being actively planned is the first part. The rest is up in the air. Going home my route will depend on time remaining in holiday. Very likely do Hwy 3 through the southern half of B.C. and hit as many of the fun roads in the Kootenays as I can then back up the Ice-fields Parkway. I may consider taking the back road from Princeton to Kelowna (or Summerland) not sure exactly where it ends up. Any info here would be great as well. As you can see I am rather open as far as route goes so If any one especially from Vancouver Island has any suggestions I'd like to hear them. I have spent only limited time here so any an all input is appreciated.

I have already started gathering all the gear together as silly as that is. The spare bed is covered in camping gear. Three new Mitas E-07 are in the mail and scheduled to arrive on Thursday. Though I likely won't put them on for another month and a half or so. May as well cook as much of the stock tires off as I can. Bought tire levers and some Dynabeads to do the change on my own. Local shop wants over $100 per wheel mounted and balanced so will give a go myself. Still undecided if I will do aux lighting before I leave. Not really going to be required as I plan on being stopped and camp set up before dark but it would help with making me more visible. Any how that is all for now.

Should be a good trip. Perfect weather that time of year. Check with BC Ferries for the scheduled departure dates of the ferry from Bella Coola (Discovery Coast Connector). We were going to use that route for a return trip to the island next month but its a small connector ferry(16 vehicles) that takes you to Bella Bella to join the larger one travelling north/south and it was full already when we wanted to travel. The ride from Williams Lake to Bella Coola is a good one. Not sure about logging roads on north of the island but the trend on the south island is most are behind gates. Trip from port Alberni to Tofino and back is worth the time if weather cooperates. On return can go from Port Alberni to Lake Cowichan on logging roads and continue to Victoria via Port Renfrew.

Have 25 days "Will Travel" will probably ride about 12,000 miles in that time.
Don’t make the mistake thinking this isn’t all about riding, and seeing as much as we can in that 25 days.
We will have no preset camping, we ride till we want to camp and find a remote place then.
We will be heading west across South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana I have been over Going to the Sun road 4 times so might skip that. up into British Columbia up the Ice Field Parkway { Unfortunately on a weekend and it might be lots of traffic} Can’t be helped.
Over to the Cassiar Highway, Up to Hyder, Alaska to see the Grizzly bears. [You will be in a small part of Alaska long before the Real Alaska] We need to do it this way because the Grizzly's might be gone if we wait till on the way home to go to Hyder. Once the Salmon are done spawning there is no more bear viewing. There is also good side trips off the Cassiar, we will ride like Telegraph Creek, The old abandon rail trail, and to Cassiar ghost town.
On up to the Yukon, up the South Canol, side trails off of this, then up the North Canol as far as we can make it [need lots of extra fuel here]
Then up to Dawson City where the Klondike gold rush took place, Then the biggy!!!! The Dempster Highway all the way to Inuvik.
Over the “ Top of the world road” with side trails off this like Clinton Creek and old mining trails.
Up to Eagle Alaska if we want to go.
To Fairbanks, Up the Dalton to the Arctic Ocean [ we need to call 24 hours ahead to get on the Ocean tour] You can not see the Arctic Ocean with out going on this tour.
Then down to the Denali Highway,Hopefully we can see Mt. McKinley. Valdez to see the Pacific Ocean, with side trips off this to places like Kennecott Mine at McCarthy, Alaska. then work our way back to the Alaska Highway with side trips off this like The Magnum Mine road and back down to Dawson Creek.
Then the long boring ride back home across the plains, 2,000 miles of nothing basically.
Remember, Ride, Ride, Ride!

packing light so I will enjoy the off road riding, That will be a big part of this trip, and some of it will be muddy, just count on it.
Warm gear, warm sleeping, waterproof, Cooking equipment, A way to clean up even if there is no showers for days, Off road tires, spare fuel can, CAMERA!

Steve - when you say "we", does that mean you and Janet 2-up?

Once, again our trip is less ambitious than the Reno's. In the first half of August, me and Mrs. Boondocker will go from southern Nevada to northern Idaho. Woo-hoo, 2 states in 2 weeks! OK, they're big states and we'll throw in a little Utah just for color and to make a loop of it.

Our plan is to do sections of the Idaho Backcountry Discovery Route and some of the highlighted roads on the Buttler maps. Cheryl wants to visit Coeur d'alene and I want ride the Lolo Motorway. Other than that, we'll play it by ear. It will be a mix of camping and moteling, cooking and dining. We have a basic counter-clockwise route to get us in and out of Idaho, but no reservations or commitments other than to hit a couple of highlights, ride around a lot, and return home on time.

I've been picking away at the maintenance items, lubing and flushing everything and replacing wear items. Will mount a set of Mitas E07 Dakars in mid-July. We spent a few days camping in the Sierra Nevada Mountains last month as a shake-down trip. Feeling pretty good about our kit and the fact that we're not over-planning this trip. The sad truth is, I've never done a trip without a firm itinerary and reservations, so the sparse planning is part of the adventure along with riding and seeing new places. Looking forward to breaking out of the old comfort zone and just riding till we get somewhere.

Cheers,
Neil

Going to Utah in 3 weeks to ride the Utah BDR for 4 days. Capitol Reef, Torrey, Price and northward on rented KLRs.
Asked about a Tenere, but all they had was the Big GS or the middie GS. So KLR it is.

Other than appropriate clothing and ATTGAT, and a decent field medical kit, tire patch kit and compressor, tool kit with tire irons, cell phones and chargers, anything else you'd absolutely bring?

Thanks for the info. I submitted a reservation request today for Aug 31. Hope that is enough time in advance to secure a spot. I'll have to look into the Port Alberni, Lake Cowichan route. Was not aware that you could get through from Port Refrew to either.

I'd rather be riding!

Wicked, I'm on the wait list for the Aug 31 sailing! Did not think that space would be an issue. Apparently the wait list started at the end of May. Will keep my fingers crossed.
