Well... first I want to give props to Jason Adams and the crew at Yukon Yamaha - this is a great bunch to deal with. They walk the talk, they use the gear and they keep it real. The mechanic has serial # 2 in the XT1200Z line.

to set the context I am coming off a 2008 Harley Dyna Super Glide. This is a bare bike, 1600cc, breathed on, tuned with high performance exhaust and Ohlins fully adjustable rear suspension. It weighs in wet at 700 and change and I at 200 ready to ride. I am short with a short reach, probably as big around as I am tall ???. 28 inch inseam.

First impressions before the ride - this is a beautiful machine and it is not small. It stands tall and looks like a bruiser brawler. With the seat in the low setting I barely tip-toe the ground. Pushing it around and side to side it feels light and moves easily.

The engine sounds delightful, low tone and sounds strong. The mechanic suggested to stay in tour mode for the first 100km or so. rolled out in the yard of Yukon Yamaha and did a bit of low speed fooling around just to feel the bike. wow - super light feel, easy to roll from side to side, full stop without touching the ground and roll off, easy friction zone work, very nimble. feels like a 400lb bike. clutch, brake, steering all have a very confidence inspiring feel at low speeds - very nimble (did I say that already).

Rem and I headed out on the road - this is a smooth machine, it was hard to keep it mellow. The first hour was easy 120kph or so. very flickable bike at speed. Very responsive. 6th gear at 3500 rpm 115kph the bars are as smooth as silk. No matter what I did the bike was calm, collected, composed and confidence inspiring. Roll on the throttle from 100kph and in no time you are up to 160kph. roll-in on corners is without issue, pick your line and it stays where you put it, want to change mid corner, counter steer lightly and it goes where you want, tighter or looser did not matter it went there.

After 200km I decided to try S mode - now I am telling you, this ride would eat my Harley for breakfast and still want more. traction control set at 1. first gear rolling, open throttle fully, my oh my, traction light blinking - 7500rpm shift and do it again in the next gear. this thing puts it to the ground 180kph in the blink of an eye ???. ya want to pass, drop a gear or two and what ever was in front of you is rapidly dispearing in the rear view mirror ???. This is a very capable ride. I am soooooo happy I bought this bike

Is that the recommended break in procedure :)) A dealer on Vancouver Island, who has one blue bike waiting for its owner told me the black bikes were shipped first. So, I guess you guys are correct, black is the fastest.

Well, 325 km the first day and I managed to take the shine off at the end of the day. layed this tall bike over in my buddies yard while turning around in loose gravel on a slope. not bad, had to happen with my short legs, could not get my foot on the ground on the low side fall :-[. The hand guard put a small dimple in the tank and of course my pride got a little dimple as well. Thank goodness I got that done with - I am sure it will not be the last nick in the tin that this bike will get. The first scratch is always the hardest to accept and noooo I will not post pictures ::).

This bike is very tall for me and I will be putting the low seat on it, lowering links on the rear suspension and sliding the fork tubes up. The cockpit is a bit long as well so will likely put some pivot risers on and roll the bars back towards the seat as well. Off-roading this bike will always be challenging for me due to my short stature, but hey, life isn't fun without some challenges and I expect to scuff-up the paint a bit - both mine and the bikes.

One other thing, my wife really liked riding pillion, said "this is way nicer than your Harley" I guess that says it all - happy wife, happy life.

Now I'm going to go and scratch it up some more... I'll let ya know how it goes. This is an awesome bike 8)

Please let us know how the risers work out. Can you tell if you have enough brake line to do this?

Well, bummer. But rest assured you are not the first (nor the last) person to lay a bike down on their first day. I did it right in front of the dealership when I bought my first new Wing back in '78.

Hey Japako, haven't looked that close yet and I have read reports from off the continent that guys have done this with the short Rox pivots. I will post on this when I get to it. Gotta lower it first, that is the priority right now. 8)

Altrider has a youtube video showing the installation of the 2"Rox risers on the ST10 and they state that they work without the need for longer cables. I'm at work and youtube is blocked or I would happily provide the link.

The hand guard contacts the tank  . I'm assuming the handguard doesn't contact the tank when the bike is uppright , so how does that happen in a low speed fall

Troll, thanks for the initial report and the updates. I'm envious and happy for you all at the same time. The bikes look great and make me almost wonder if I did right by ordering the blue. But, I've been riding a black bike for the last 30 years and it is definately time for a little color in my life!

What panniers are on the bike in the picture in front of the dealership. They look great on the bike. Still haven't made up my mind on luggage. Have fun and soooooooo happy for you and your buds. Especially your wife. Wondering how my mate will take to it.
