I have spent parts of the past 3 summers in the Gunnison/Crested Butte area riding my Tiger, ST and KTM. Great area! Great eats in funky Crested Butte, plus according to the wife the best coffee/espresso, ever. Camp 4 on Elk St.

We staged one of the Moto-Marathons out of the Holiday Inn in Gunnison, right on the east side of town. They treated the 50 or so of us very well. We did 4 days rides out of there, hitting most of the paved mountain passes within the surrounding 150 miles along with the million dollar highway, Ouray, Independence Pass, Cottonwood Pass - (paved on one side dirt on the other, easy for the ST) including down to Chama, NM. Plus it is close to Taylor Park and all the neat dirt roads & trails in the area. From mild to wild! I believe I have the garmin .gdb files of the day trips we did out of Gunnison.

I have been there in July, August and Sept. All nice, but plan for afternoon rain showers, no matter what. Snow possible in June and Sept.

I'll will be in Crested Butte next Sept. If there is a gathering, I might come out early!

OK, at this point I feel that I'm good to subscribe, I used to think you guys were all nuts for going to places on bikes I would only fly to.

I've been practicing, recently I went for my first solo two day trip on a bike, Colorado 2013 will take some planing, I think it's doable :-\ .

I'm a definite probably. I love riding in Colorado, everything except the speed limits. I will be a camper and Gunnison sounds good to me. Last time I was in Ouray the campground in town was full as one was up a nasty rocky road a little ways south of town. A couple in a camper let me use the tent spot next to their camper. Turned out to be really nice people and we had great conversation over the fire that night.

Yup, had my birthday dinner there. It is very good! Service was a bit slow/spotty but we showed up unannounced, post Engineer's Pass ride, big group, like 14 of us. I think this should be added as a place to go to. Good food, good drinks.

Yo Phil.. You going ?

Ouray is "okay", just not sure if I'm ready for all the RV's and looky-loo's that seem to flock to the Million Dollar Highway during the summer.

It seems more folks would rather be in the mountains than in the valley looking at the mountains. I know it's a pain. 8000 feet and breathing don't mix. Can you say headache? And those damned hot springs, what good are those? O:)

Doesn't that usually focus around the weekends though?

Rod,

Wont you be with most of us out riding awesome adventure roads out off the main road? We wont see no stinking motorhomes... :p

Joking aside, knowing that Colorado is very popular in the summer in most parts of the state, we will all need to be safe and have a good time. Hopefully we can ride some areas that will have little to no motorhomes or traffic. No mater what, we will all be in a great area with good friends and great riding ! ::012::

IIRC, there is only US550 into and out of Ouray and thus the only game in town to reach any other roads - either adventure oriented or other mountain twisties. This is always a concern for any of the events I have been a part of. Granted, 550 (the Million Dollar highway) is an awesome road, but the traffic can be a nightmare.

Just as I told Rem and Troll way back when the Yukon Rally was being planned - pick a spot and date and people WILL come AND have a great time - DESPITE all the little annoyances.

Also, as I mentioned in my PM to you, I may not make this anyway as I have a conflict with another event that I attend almost every year.

Those locations would each work great, that's for sure. Gunny, Montrose, etc surely don't have the ambience of Silverton, Ouray, Teluride ect. , and a lot of us are tourists who will appreciate the uniqueness of those old mining towns. You really need to get the tolerance level up for traveling though Colorado. Because Getting behind a train of RV's on 550 can be a PITA but What can be more frustrating is that there is a lot of Road Construction going on in Colorado! . Check out that CDOT link and you will see what I'm talking about. Sitting in front of the flag man for an unknown amount of time can be trying. The wife and I usually make a run from Breckenridge, Aspen, Telluride to see the Aspens, but this year we are heading to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Wherever it will be, as long as the dates don't change , we will be there. ::026::
