Hell, even All-American Harley-Davidson uses them thar' new fangled plastic fuel tanks!!! :D

I know, my friggin' XR1200 has one!

So does my Suburban for that matter, and I think my Cadillac CTS-V does, too. :)

Been in the parts/service end of the car biz for 15 years, and nowadays it's downright rare to see a metal fuel tank hanging underneath any car. And BTW have seen more problems from metal tanks than plastic ones on cars of the same vintage.

Two thoughts/questions...

What countries have ethanol in their fuel? What percent of the market for Ducati are those countries?

Okay, three---

Which creates more sparks while sliding down the road- A steel gas tank or a plastic one?

3) the plastic tank is not going to limit sparks. The whole bike is metal!

Well, except for the plastic tank if it has one... and maybe plastic fenders, side covers, etc. Then there's the seat... ::025::

dont forget rubber grips. :p

seriously....the parts that touch down are pegs, side of engine, parts of the frame, forks, and swing arm....pretty much all metal. anyways. congrats on the S10!

Well, at least aluminum doesn't spark too bad... ::025::

Thank goodness I don't run any crash bars! All of 'em out there are steel, and I'd hafta' really start worrying!!! ???

Man, I thought I'd leave all the plastic tank/ ethanol discussions behind when I left the Multi forum. I've only been hanging out here for a few weeks and I already miss hearing you guys bragging about how boringly reliable your bikes are.

Our bikes ARE boringly reliable - that's why we jump all over any drama we can... ;)

True, we must be more thankful to others for supplying us with cheap entertainment at their expense. ::024::

Carry on, I hope I haven't jinxed anyone with gratuitous smugness.

Flogged my S10 from Colorado Springs to Crested Butte and back this weekend. ~500 miles at high altitude. 2up. Ran E10 91 octane out and back. Got 46mpg (US) out and 56mpg back. Passed two Multisrada's - 1 on a trailer the other in the back of a pickup truck. All I could think was, damn, you poor bastards can't or won't ride them?

Weird.

Obviously the owners could not stand the fun and thrills any longer. ::)

Having just traded in a Moto Guzzi Stelvio for my S10, I could not be tempted anytime soon into another Italian marque. ::003::

Well, since you asked...

I was en route to Alaska in July with three friends when my Stelvio, which had about 24,000 miles on the clock, broke down twice, first in Iowa, then in Minnesota. Electrical issues both times. I lost confidence in the machine. My buddies carried on, and I returned home where I traded my Stelvio in on the S10. In fairness to the bike, I had it for three and a half years and it had never given me grief before that. I had previously taken it on some long trips with no issues. However, the Guzzi dealer network is far from robust. I was concerned that it would fail again, perhaps somewhere in the middle of the Yukon Territory or Alaska, and I would be out of luck for servicing. Ducati's dealer net is better, but they are still a relatively rare bike in North America.

Naturally, after I had the Stelvio repaired and traded in, the new owner purchased it from my dealer and rode it 1300 miles to his home in Texas without any difficulties. ::025::

In summary, from all I have heard and read, I don't think you can beat the Super Ten for reliability. The Italian bikes are pretty good these days, but if you do run into problems with one, you will be fortunate if you are within a hundred miles or so of the nearest dealer. I did luck out, as my problems occurred less than 100 miles from Crystal Lake, Minnesota, where an excellent Moto Guzzi dealership is located.

Cheers,

Bruce
