I'm planning on having the OEM hard bags installed for normal operation (multi-day touring and in-town riding).
However, for extended off-road riding (Ollie here was suggesting perhaps doing part of the TAT), I would remove the hard bags and go with a software option. Something that would not sustain damage in a fall...which I would prepare to happen at least once or twice, while offroad.
I like the Nelson-Rigg CL-850s for that. I have their tail bag, which is good quality, though the mounting does not work as effectively for my current bike.
I'd be interested in hearing about mounting effectiveness on the ST.

I'm hoping to find the soft set first and then consider hard panniers.

Have scoped out the Nelson Rigg with lifetime warranty if they fail due to construction and they are definitely in the running.

Chase Harper has a lifetime repair or replace even if you crash warranty is what led me to lean their way. That and I hope to convince the dealer to let me check fitment before I buy, though that is an unknown at this point.

Thanks for your help.

Hey, anyone interested in Wolfman soft luggage they are having a closeout sale on many of their items. I've used Wolfman luggage for about the last seven years and it is high quality stuff. Also, it is difficult to find this brand at any steep discounts. With this recent closeout sale I purchased two Beta Tailbags and the attachment duffle for extra capacity.

Anyone interested in a low cost tank bag Motorcycle Superstore has a Fieldsheer, Eiffel 2, strap on tank bag for 65% off. Just purchased a $150 tank bag for $45.00. This is a closeout item so there may not be many left.

Thanks Bugsy! Hopefully all interested in these bags see this in time to get some before they run out.

For those looking for good functional soft luggage with a price that is great, check out the Nelson Rigg CL-850 saddlebags.

Thanks for stealing my pics! ;)
Yesterday I mounted my CL-850's on my S10. Looks fantastic.
On my old Strom you had the same problem as now on the S10. Exhaust on one side, so the soft luggage needs support on the other.
On the Strom I fixed that using the Dan Vesel Soft Luggage Guard (and a couple of Tool Tubes)

On the S10, I opted for the SW Motech Quicklock EVO Rack. Install is a breeze. The backbrace uses the license plate holder. I have the Touratech mudguard on there, and even then it installed without a fuss.

I then added the CL850's. Strapped right down, and the top straps can go under the passenger seat no problem!

Added the Givi Trekker 46L Top Box and I think my luggage setup is complete!

Feel free to ask any questions!

Thanks. If only I could get it outside for some better picks, my basement sucks for taking snaps...

Maybe this weekend!

Oh and I must confess, the Trekker case is not attached to the bike, the GIVI adapter plate is in backorder....

Looks good!!! It's nice to see the SW-Motechs installed (mine are in the stable, waiting for a bike to mount them on) and also nice to see the 46L Trekker installed as a trunk (also in my plans).

:)

TooTall if you don't mind sharing what was the total cost of your setup to include rack, soft bags and trunk if you don't mind could you break it down also price of each. I'm really trying to decide what the best way to go between hard and soft bags. Thanks

I don't mind, but do note I'm from Belgium, so I'm dealing with VAT/Import duties on imported items and things that might not be available to you...

I can tell you this;
SW Motech Quicklocks (Ebay) 199.95€
Givi Trekker 46L case (Ebay) 210,00€
NelsonRigg CL850 (Ebay) 124,00€
Givi adapter for the Trekker case was negotiated into the deal when I bought the bike, should be around 100,00€

Total 633,95€ = 896,08USD

Prefer the soft cases over the hard cases, cheaper being the biggest factor, weight too, and safety third :)

I may just pick up a set of the Nelson-Riggs for extra space rather than buy the Trekkers.
The Trekker cases are nice, but way to expensive if you compare it to the NelsonRigg setup.

I already had one of the E460 Givi cases (the well-known round oval dismal donut-shaped UFO) and I'd rather die then have that brick of a thing on the back of my XT1200Z. The Trekker topcase was new, priced right and fit the bike better (IMHO)

I'm trying to tell from the pics of the Nelson case open can you fit a fullface helmet in there? Also could you fit a laptop say 10x14"? Also how about weather are the Nelson's rated for rain?
