My last posting on this subject was quite helpful in finalizing my decision on the 36L Caribou setup....so, hoping I can get same sage advice on bars and plate.

I'm leaning to Altrider Skid Plate...I like the construction, the gauge (3.175mm vs SW-Motech 3) and the SW-Motech crash bars, with the freeway pegs.

Though I think I prefer the engineering of the AltRider bars, I prefer the design of the SW-MOTECH bars and what looks to be lower weight. I also like having f'way pegs available...being able to stretch the feet forward after 500 miles really improves end of day riding.

Any comments? Have any of our overseas bretheren sampled any of the above and have personal experience?

I have the Givi crash bars, and have "tested" them. They work fine. Left and right side panels may be removed with the bars in place. Fit and finish are fine. Price is right. If you choose them take the time to read the Givi Crash Bar Thread in the modification section, as the instructions aren't the best. They go on fine if you do what is said in the thread.

The Yamaha add on aluminum skid plate has been documented to result in broken sumps if bashed hard. Although 3 mm, it's attachments are not up to par with other plates. I did a thread on it here The Yamaha Skid Plate

I now have the SW-Motech skid plate. I did a thread on it too... SW-Motech Skid Plate. It is miles ahead of the Yamaha plate.

Here are a few pics. Both S10's have the Givi crash bars, and mine, the black one, has the SW-Motech skid plate mounted. Scroll on down, there are some pretty good views of the bling.

::026:: On the Altrider skid plate. I have tested it and so far so good. The additional wrap around on the pipesa and cases have dents and scratch's that otherwise would have smacked those componenets. Downside changing oil sucks!

Going to Echo the sentiments of others on the GIVI crash bars, they look stout, were easy to mount, look good and the price is right. I haven't dropped my S10 since I've installed them ::26::

I gave my AltRider skid plate a 'little' off-road adventure and it passed with flying colors, even though I cracked a couple of welds.

My only complaint is it that they plate seams should be completely welded inside & out (as all my Flatland plates are). According to the aerospace certified welder who re-welded my plate is that the welds on my plate were 'cold' in addition to not penetrating sufficiently. A six-pack and a few minutes fixed that issue.

Here is my adventure story: http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=2252.msg37751#msg37751
