I have been watching this with interest. Has anyone checked to see what the Customs charges would be? Also what the extra shipping charges would be if you did the regional thing?

For folks in the US, with respect to customs charges, information is available at:

http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/trade/trade_outreach/diduknow.xml

and

http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/trade/basic_trade/internet_purchases.xml#ImportingProcess

I suck at paperwork and am not a lawyer, but it would seem that the easiest way to do this would be an internet purchase with shipping to clusters of buyers in mutually convenient geographical areas.... personal non-commercial use exemption would apply to the bars. (I think).

My latest e-mail to Deon. Hope he replies? Hope this will help answer some questions. Ground transportation to central location(s) will have to be arranged by the regional group, all I can do is get some local estimates from the two or three transport companies here.
Please encourage others to take part.

Salty

Hi Deon,
This may take a while but I think we are getting some momentom. There are five or six very interested riders and one of the main concerns at this time is our issue of transport from Halifax or Philidelphia port to NA destinations. I think we may have a tentative solution for this, but I need further information. Can you provide the following so we can fiqure out the finer logistics and encouarge others to join.

* weight of a unit
* apx weight of crate
* all mounting hardware included
* side panel access and removal clearence
* If this is a wood crate it must be of manufactured of treated wood to meet Ca. / US import regulations and a plant health phytosanitary certificate would be required.
* I assume that 10 units per crate is an optimum marine ratio for weight, volume and charges. Please advise.
* warrenty
* name of the marine carrier, so that I can establish relations with an Import Broker(s)
* there was a refference to an added value tax by the SA government. If this is so can it be recovered or waved from the price.
* Is $540.00 US the bottom line if we manage more than 1 crate of 10 units.
* is there test or real world information available

I know this list may not be the norm, but this information will be required given there is no dealership in NA.

Many thanks, we look forward to your reply

sail2xxs thanks for the US customs info. I am late replying as I was in a rush out the door on business matters. No S10 yet but recieved info from Yamaha Canada that Blue will soon be on the way from Vancouver. I hope in time for the Cape Breton Thunder in the Highlands rally.

Deon has supplied a list of six individuals in South Africa, whom I have contacted and I am waiting for a responce. Respecting confidentiality I will report responses as I get them.
I also sent individual request for information to some others, only two have responded. One had no Knowledge, the other was very favorable sighting the ruggedness and sutibility to difficult off road application.

I will also checK into the export broker in South Africa Charl Lewis Freight and find out which shipping line is used. Also look at tentative arrangments with aN Import broker here for NA.

We still need a total of ten committed souls ?

Ok so here is the photo page link again http://www.rollbend.co.za/photo_album.php?album=22

I have been debating on several major purchases; bags and racks, crash bars and skid plates. After looking at these pictures again I see they do several things I have been looking for:
1. Protecting both the upper panels and the lower engine cases
2. Not bolting the skid plate to the motor - ideally not at all and certainly not to the cases

There is even a good place to bolt highway pegs if you are so inclined

Considering the cost of skid plates and bars seperately these do seem like a bargin if we can keep total cost to $600. Salty put me down as committed and I am willing to pay for shipping out to California.

The following replies were received on the question of real life experience, only first names were used and the picture provided was with permission to post.
Salty

We have purchased many of the Rumbux crash bars from Deon for the Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Tenere's and 660 Tenere's. I have a client with a Super Tenere that has the Rumbux crash bars on his bike that has dropped his bike on both sides with no damage. The crash bars never even bent.The crash bars are very easy to install and look great on the bikes. I also like the fact that the skid plate is fixed to the crash bar.

Clint

I bought the Yamaha Super Tenere last year and having had a BMW GS1200 before, all the plastic felt a bit exposed as my riding skills aren't fantastic and I was sure to do some damage. The Yamaha ones didn't look sturdy enough and having heard of Deon's design, had them fitted. How fantastic they are! I attended a weekend off-road course in March and dropped my bike a lot of times. No damage to my bike, and the bars didn't bend at all. I can really recommend them. Maybe I should invest in his company….

Celia

Trust everything is well that side of the world. I was a bit worried about the weight factor in the beginning. After fitment it made no difference that I could feel. The bars are made of high quality steel, it looks good and give more than expected protection. Highly recommended. The only small negative point is when replacing the oil filter you have to remove the sump protection plate, but this needs to be done with any other sumpcover aswell. so , not really a problem. If there is anything else you would like to know, kindly contact me again

MAARTEN

I am very happy with my XT1200 crash bar and have had no troubles with it. We have also sold a couple of XT660Z crash bars and have received top service from Rumbux

Garth

I have fitted the Rumbux crash bars and engine plate to my Yamaha 1200 XT Super Tenere in January 2011. The best thing I have done recently. I have used the motorbike on a trip and did some 3700km in 7 days with a number of falls in the gravel as well as on tar roads. I can thus safely state that the workmanship and material are of exceptional quality and the service I have received of excellent standards. Not only did it prevent any damage to the motorcycle itself, but merely had a few scratches on the bar without it bending in any manner whatsoever and proven it durability in all areas. I can definitely recommend.

Will

I had a look at the rollbend product and is of very good quality. They are very strong and will suite someone that plans to use the S10 in heavy off-road riding. The material and workmanship is very good. The only reason I did not get them is because they do not look as good to me! They are functional first then cosmetic second!

"Functional first and cosmetic second." combined with the other comments, says it all for me.

Keep me on the "definite and committed" list! :D

Ok Salty, ya did good on the info & feedback from previous buyers in SA. I wasn't too sure on some of the details and still have some thoughts on the weight of the bars, but damn if I don't like the features of upper and lower protection and mounting points for lights and highway pegs on the acreage of bars there. Put me down as a committed buyer if we keep this under $600 or so. I may ride out to you rather than require shipping, but a lot depends on the time line involved.

Just got a note from the dealer that the bike should be arriving by 8/5 and available for delivery perhaps a week later. I would love to have bars on before I go riding, but I'm thinking that's not likely.

What's the situation on the Rumbux bars at this point Salty? Enough people? Looks lite from the forum response. Any chance we can get an order of 5 shipped?

Thanks!

I have not been around much the last couple of days so sorry not kept up to date. EricV this will take some time and if everything comes togeather in the next two or three weeks I would not expect to recieve the shipment for at lease an additional 6 to 8 weeks. Keep in mind production time, ground transportation, crateing, sea transport and customs clearence and again ground transportation. I have contacted an Import Broker here in Halifax, who is gathering the transporting and cost information at this time with a tentative crate delivery to Colorado. This will be fine tuned at a later date, with imput from our US purchasers. At this time I hope and feel that the total cost will be around $700 / 750.00, each.

When compared to:.......................Altrider bars $368.43 + plate $332.97 = $ 701.40 + tax
:.......................SW - Motech bars $252.99 + palte $223.99 = $ 476.98 + tax
:.......................Yamaha bars $469.95 + plate $219.95 = $ 689.90 + tax

Not a Bad Deal for a superior bar and plate combo, with no attachment to the engine. As far as I can tell there is no duty applied to motorcycle accessories i Canada or the US only local taxes. The accounting is based on a shipping unit of 10 and most likely be more $ for a smaller number.

Thanks for the update Salty. It still sort of looks like we don't have enough people to make this work on a crate of ten bars. Too bad the SA folks can't do more cost feasible air freight. We get spoiled with the ease of ordering things world wide these days.

Guys,

For anyone interested in the crashbars from Rollbend, I'm headed over to the UK in October. I checked with Deon, and he provided the quote below for shipping from SA to London:

-----
Hi Chris,

Shipping to London via air freight is as follows:-

1. x1 Crash bar set $700.00
2. x2 Crash bar set $579.00 X 2=$1158.00
3. x3 Crash bar set $520.00 X 3=$1560.00

Payment in advance, on order.
--------

This seems pretty reasonable, and since I travel light, I expect to be able to bring the bars back with me as personal luggage qat no or at least nominal, additional cost. If you're interested, and you're serious, let me know. From a logistics perspective, we can figure out how to ship the bars to you once I get them back to the US, or, the more fun option, you can come by my house in Maryland, install them, and ride home.

Chris

@Sail2xxs - That's a pretty nice sounding deal, and timely. However, I don't want to screw up Salty's gig. I really want the bars sooner rather than later... Are you sure you can get these on the plane w/o issues? 25.5 lbs each adds up, and that's w/o a box, just wrapped in plastic. I've flown my share of international flights and extra baggage gets expensive.

@Salty - Any progress? And do we have enough people for the Qty of 10 shipment?

Eric V -

I absolutely don't want to screw up Salty's deal, but we are not getting enough people together to pull it off. I asked for quotes on 3 sets of bars because I figured it would be you, Salty and me. If we can get 10 sets over here sooner, I'm all for it.

I have no idea what kind of miles you are putting on the bike, but at least for me, I hope to have put close to 12K on it by October - until then, I don't expect the OEM Metzlers to take me anywhere that I ought to need crashbars or a bashplate.

Best,

Chris
