Well, my take is that you don't snug down those four little housing bolts when you replace the shaft drive. Get that lined up first, then tighten down the screws/bolts. Just gives it a little play for alignment. Or not. R ::010::

One additional thing. When the differential has been loosened from the shaft housing, re-assembly requires that you leave the four screws/nuts finger tight, tighten the axle shaft to spec, then tighten the four nuts to spec. This prevents small little mis-aligment issues through the differential that can cause unusual noises.
Yeah, what he said. O:)

OK just pulled my pumpkin.... and the whole shaft came out with it. Is that what's s'posed to happen? Don't see any mention of it in Checkwrecks' "popping the pumpkin".

The drive end doesn't seem to want to come out, and I don't see anything in the manual that would seem to be keeping it in - do I just need to tug harder on my pumpkin? ::025::

Yes, that's how it comes out. Clean and lube the splines and follow the instruction earlier in this thread and you have it.

Real important to either spray or lube the axle full length. Mine was stuck in bad enough if I had had to hammer it any more I would have been replacing wheel bearings.

Great thanks - lubed the axle last time and it came out pretty easy this time.

dcstrom, Have been wondering about this myself. Haven't had mine apart yet, will get done this winter along with swing arm mait.
Shows on 4-103 of the manual the drive shaft with a spring, oil seal, washer and circlips installed at the final drive end of the drive shaft .
The manual on 4-117 talks about using a fork seal driver attachment to install that oil seal etc. to the final drive end of the drive shaft, then use another size seal driver attatchment to set the drive shaft/oil seal assembley back into the final drive coupling gear to a given installed depth.
I appears that because this drive shaft assembly into the final drive has an external oil seal it shouldn't need lube unless its removed from the final drive? Let us know what you find.

19mm You can buy an All Thread coupler for cheap at Lowes or Home Depot and it works nicely. 1/2" threaded rod.

BWC - yeah it looks like a bit of work to remove the shaft from the drive end - and as you say, as long as the oil seal is ok it shouldn't necessary. I wonder if the splines on that end are actually in the oil bath?

Reddawg - axle nut is 27mm - there's a hex in the other end of the axle, 19mm, which is the same as the front. Not necessary to have a tool for it for the rear since you can tap the axle through from the other side.

Thank You dcstrom,i tapped it with a soft hammer, and it stopped,so i figured it was threaded at the Nut end..

The shaft splines on the pumpkin side are not oil bath. The manual states a moly paste, like Honda 60.
I had mine apart to check it out recently.. If you do take it apart, you will need new seals

oh yeah Jim I remember something now - maybe you have more final drive experience than the rest of us! I didn't see any more posts about your issue - did you find anything?

Nada, zip.. I was hoping for a bearing, but everything looked great and all play was in spec. Anyway I'm glad it was good, but still think it was showing too much silver in the oil..

Good to see that the same stingy bastard in charge of greasing the final drive over on the FJR line found a new job working the ST line. Yamaha, I've got 4 words for you: "grease is the word." :D

Actually... You probably can't see in my pic, but there WAS a decent amount of grease on my shaft splines. Not so much on the wheel splines though, which I'd greased the first time I had it off.

Must be a different guy on the line doing (or not doing) spline greasing!

Like you, my driveshaft splines had a fair amount of grease on 'em, but literally none on the wheel drive splines. Stuff on the shaft splines was some near translucent white grease. I cleaned that off and used a liberal amount of my favorite mix of Honda 60 Moly Paste and Dupont Krytox (http://www2.dupont.com/Lubricants/en_US/products/Products_Greases.html). I also gave all the wheel drive splines a good spread of the same lube mix, too.

Next time I pull it apart I'm gonna' pop the other end of the shaft out (I think it just pulls with a circlip, requiring you only compress the spring) and use the same Moly 60/Krytox mix on the splines in there, too.
