Oil filter, too small?

I have fitted a Givi bash plate to my 2018 ZE. Because of the proximity of the oil filter to the front part of the bash plate, I somehow ended up with a couple of these filters, as they seem to have been recommended hereabouts.
There's one on the bike and this in the photo is the second.
My concern is this: I'm planning as soon as we can, my wife and I to ride East across the 'Stans and am worried that I might not be able to find one this short when in the back of beyond, so my questions are:
1. should I cut a hole in the front of the bash plate to accommodate a regular sized filter in case I have to change filter where only regular sized ones are available?
2. is this shorter filter compromising filtration due to its diminutive size anyway?

I do change oil and filter 5000 miles or less anyway, or at least once a year.

204 is the number for the short filter and 303 is the same filter, but longer. A lot of filter manufactures use the same numbers. You can always stop by a Honda shop and get a filter for a Goldwing, same short filter. These 204 filters are very easy to find.mfj.jpg

I wouldn't have thought that GIVI would have made their skid plate too short. My Altrider has hardly any clearance between it and the filter. It's the main reason I remove the plate when I change the oil/filter. Can't remove the filter with the plate in place. I'd "modify" the plate to fit the filter before I cut the plate.

#1. I would definitely not cut the plate so the filter can stick forward.
#2. The filter is fine.

As OldRider mentioned, take extra filters. They are small enough to not be a real space consumer.

I use the AmsOil filter and it is the same as the Honda filter as I use it on my Hondas. I also use AmsOil and they state you can double the mileage so then I do not have to change oil during a trip. I have two test kits to analysis the oil and rear diff drive unit gear oil. Both have 13,000 miles on them. I will post the results when they come back in my thread on the tech forum. Don't know if that will help you or not... otherwise bring a filter or two.

The Mahle filters are short and work well. Amazon has them.

Thanks all, maybe I was thinking that it being shorter meant that it didn't filter as well.
One of the reasons I didn't want to take filters but to get one on route, is I just completed a 4200 mile journey on my Harley Sportster with my son on pillion plus full camping gear.
We were TIGHT for space, and I'm planning a trip to India on the S10 with wife on the back and I KNOW she'll want to bring more gear than my son could, so I really don't want to take gear I can buy abroad.
What puzzles me is that the Givi bash plate didn't allow for a full sized filter to be fitted (at least that's my memory of it when I tried to fit the bash plate with the original filter in place).
Maybe it just looked like it wouldn't fit. I know the bash plate is where it's supposed to go as the screw holes all line up, so it's not that I've fitted it to far back that it touches the filter.

Maybe because I'm used to travelling long distances on single cylinder bikes in my youth, I'm not bothered by that.
I have to say, with my ZE it feels like travelling with a 2 wheeled car-too much comfort and too much tech. It seems to have taken a little of the adventure spirit out of motorcycling.
On the other hand, YES, it's good to know the following:
No chain to wax/adjust/clean/replace.
The surety of being able to fix a puncture at the side of the road with sticky string (my Sportster has inner tubes)
The ability to carry a pillion in relative comfort
The increased luggage capacity
Ability to stand on pegs when tired
General Yamaha reliability, and more importantly, given that we want to go to far off lands, availability of mechanics that could work on the bike, and that it's a tried and tested power plant
Range.

So all in all, for what we ultimately intend to use it for, PERFECT. The Sportster, totally inadequate.
But, the Sportster for me, the rider, is way more comfortable (I'm not tall) and it puts a grin on my face, the Yamaha, though absolutely brilliant doesn't.

Neither will be sold as long as I'm alive.

Thanks Sierra, all I remember is that when I tried (a) filter the bash plate didn't go on, it kept pivoting on the filter.
Now it's perfectly possible that I wasn't using an OEM filter and that's where the problem lay.
Appreciate the note-I'll look into it.

I should add to post #13, that the 4200 miles I did were across France, all the way around Spain and back again.
All with recovery/repatriation insurance and of course, not a great distance from UK.
So for that the Sportster WAS suitable, though some would disagree.

Sorry to labour this point, but exactly how long is the OEM filter?
I had bought a K&N 204 filter that has a hex on the top to aid removal with socket set, and that one wouldn't allow the Givi bash plate to fit.
Here's a pic I managed to get through the bash plate holes, plus one of the two 204 filters for comparison.
The filter on my 1200 Sportster is at least 1" longer than these 204 filters.

Don’t believe the slightly longer filters some outfits sell make any significant difference in filtering abilities, the stock length filter works fine.
