I anneal the drain plug washers for my XS650, but they're different. They're about 1.5" in diameter and are round, more like an O-ring. Cost a lot more than standard crush washer too. I think as long as you're not crushing the hell out of the washers you should be able to reuse them at least a half a dozen times.

With the greatest respect fellas, I can't believe that there are 14 pages on a thread just about an oil change! Anal or what? Annealing washers? I can't believe it. Just drain the friggin oil and replace it with whatever is your favourite lube. How hard can it be? And here am I adding to the tally!!!!!

I'm going out and changing my pneumatic fluid. It's old and of the summer variety. It's time for some fresh fall pneumatic fluid.

Not true I'm glad to say. I read a few posts and noticed that there were 14 pages so I skipped to the end few to see if the thread had morphed into something different as is sometimes the case but no - still on about oil changes.

The thread "Oil Change" is about changing oil. What were you expecting? No need to bad mouth a thread for staying with the Subject.

I had the same oil issue yesterday. I couldn't see a line in the window so I assumed the dealer didn't add enough oil and because they were closed yesterday I couldn't call them to see what kind of oil they used. So I decided to change the oil. I got on the bike and road it around the neighborhood until it was all warmed up. ( I know this because the bike fan came on ). Then I pulled the drain plugs and drained the oil. I put the plugs back in and filled the oil until it was in the middle of the window. Then I started the bike and let it warm up good and then shut the bike off and waited. Then added some more oil until it was back in the middle of the window , started it again and then shut it off and waited. added a little bit more. Then I took it for a ride and came home and let it sit for a while and I can't see a line in the window ?? I with Yamaha would have just used a dip stick. LOL

The bike needs to be on the center stand and on a level spot. It is best, just to put in the required amount, then ride the bike, put it on the center stand and leave it set for a while, or over night. The oil level in the window will change from ride to ride. Could be at the top or 1/4 up, or anywhere in between.

I check mine in the garage , it has a smooth level concrete floor and I had it on the center stand. I haven't been out to the garage this morning but I will go out later and see where it is.
I haven't got to ride the bike very much yet , but we still have some nice days coming before winter , so I hope to put some break-in mines on it.

After the break-in period I think I will switch to Mobile Synthetic oil ??? That Yamalube is way to expensive , they charged me $38.00 for a gallon of Yamalube engine oil and a filter yesterday at the dealer.

And just how much is 4 quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic *MOTORCYCLE* oil in your area? You do *NOT* want to run Mobil 1 *CAR* oil in your Super Ténéré. The friction modifiers in it will play hell with your clutch.

And don't get me wrong, I love Mobil 1 synthetic motorcycle oil, and it's what I run in mine. But around here it's $9.95 plus sales tax, so I get mine in a 6-quart case through Amazon for $60 with free Prime two-day shipping. Two cases gets you 3+ oil changes.

Obviously if you drive a couple of miles, the oil will be hotter and will have expanded more giving you a false over filled reading.

I checked it again this morning and there is no oil line showing in the window. ( it's been sitting all night ). I'll warm it up to 140 degrees later , let it sit a few minutes and see what happens. Sure is confusing when the oil readings are all over the place. An oil dipstick would have been easier. But that aside , I love this bike !!

How much oil did you pour in the engine? It requires 3.6 quarts with a new oil filter.

Just like the owners manual says. I started the bike , let it run for 10 minutes ( well , about 13 because it was cold out ) shut it off and waited about 6 minutes and the oil level was at the half way mark in the window , right where it's supposed to be. :)
Since I had to warm the bike up to check the oil I figured I might as well take it for a spin and put some break-in miles on it. ::26::

I find it sad that something as basic as changing the oil/filter results in 15 pages of discussion/frustration from S10 owners.

Dry sump, wet sump, hot, cold, level blah, blah, blah.

But it's still a great commuter bike. Good job Yamaha.

BTW, what's the MSRP for an Yammie oil filter? How about dealer cost?

I had to laugh at my local Yammie parts guy when he wanted to charge me $12+ for a oil filter.

Went down the road to Wal-Mart and got a Bosh filter for just a wee bit less (like $7 less).

Capitalism at it's finest!
