When I was last involved in an altercation of the vehicular kind, I thought to myself that the law of averages would render me relatively hassle free for the rest of the year at least. I mean, 8 months of ill health, heart surgery, being side swiped by vans etcetera, you'd have thought that fate had buggered me about enough for a while.

Well apparently not!

I went for a decent ride out to meet my friend Andy earlier today and, given the mild weather, decided to leave a few hours early and take the scenic route. About 15 miles from my destination, I was riding through a very picturesque Derbyshire village and began to pull up to a stop at a mini-roundabout. When out of nowhere………... BANG!

Next thing I know, i'm doing a passable impersonation of an olympic pommel horse gymnast, before being unceremoniously dumped onto the centre of the roundabout with my S10 on top of me.

Once I had regained my senses, I saw a large german made saloon car in the spot where I previously was. Apparently the driver of said car hadn't noticed me and had driven her car right up my chuff.

Having picked myself up off the floor and checked that all my limbs were attached and functioning, I was able to pick my bike up and wheel it over to the side of the road. The lady who hit me was hugely apologetic and admitted full responsibility on the spot but still insisted that she hadn't seen me. Given that I was dressed like an attendee at a fluorescent clothing fetishists convention, I didn't think it unreasonable to ask when she'd last had her eyesight tested.

After checking the damage to my bike, swapping our names, addresses and insurance details, I managed to limp her home without too much trouble but i'm now quite sore and thoroughly pissed off at the prospect of having to deal with insurance companies………... and all that it implies.

I am so very grateful to be in one piece and to only be hurting through bumps and bruises. I'm all too well aware that it could have been so much worse too but given everything that's happened over the year, I am left feeling that someone "up there" may be trying to tell me maybe it's time to hang up my boots and helmet? :( :(

Seriously, if at the very least you are not looking straight ahead while driving where on earth are you looking? My guess, texting. Distracted driving is as bad as drunk driving.

Sorry for your luck mate. Glad you're ok though. I went through a string of accidents between 2003 and 2004 myself. It started with me heading to work on my VTR 1000 Super Hawk. A lady in a Mustang pulled out from her drive right in front of me. I was going about 40ish mph, and had no time to react. So I T-boned the Mustang and flew over the top, ending up on the street with a huge pain in my nether region. I hit the back of the stell tank on my honda so hard I dented it. The bike wad totaled, and I got to know a urologist.
I replaced the Honda with a BMW r1100s, and got to enjoy it for almost 5000 miles before I got into a sharp right hand curve too fast on my favorite mountain road in Arkansas. I leaned it in hard, felt the back sliding a bit and did the opposite of what I should have. I let off the throttle and was promptly high sided off into a deep ravine. Broken pelvis, deep cut exposing bone on my lower left leg and a pinky at a right angle out from my hand. Bad day, and 7 months recovery.
So after I could ride again I was on my old XR250R puttering around on a trail through the woods and somehow crashed on a corner with big roots that I'd been over hundreds of times without incident. Somehow I tore my bicep tendon away from my lower right arm, and my bicep rolled up near my shoulder like a cheap window blind. Another 5 months recovery.
I still ride and have been accident free for ten years now. Maybe its luck, mabe my riding improved. Who knows, but I'll ride untill I'm no longer physically able. Screws, titanium plate, donor tendon and all.

Glad you seem to be okay but have yourself checked over by a Doctor.....no point in taking any chances. Bikes are easier to fix than people.

Hi Mikey. If she didn't see you, she didn't see the roundabout nor would she have seen a child in your place! You can see it as some greater being out to get you or teaching a Pratt how to look through the windscreen. I hope your bruises and pain go quick. Get back on the bike. I'm in your area if you need dragging out.

Thing that matters most is that you are OK. Bike can be fixed.

I'm glad you are ok! WTF was this driver looking at if she didn't see you? If you are unable to see what is in front of you then time to assess what you are doing being the wheel of a 1500kg killing machine!! It never ceases to amaze me the stupidity of the human race and how it ever survived this long without being wiped out! I wonder when this natural selction thing is going to kick in?
Anyway, speedy recovery to you, but do get the hassle with getting the bike sorted and dealing with the insurance company, that in itself could be stressful for me!

Very sorry to hear this, I certainly hope you can sort out things with the insurace.

When a similar thing happened to me last year, lying in the hospital I had plenty of time for similar thoughts. I will spare you my mental back-and-forth on whether I should stop riding our not. As soon as I could walk again, I climbed into the saddle of my next bike.

Why that? My answer is simple: Deciding not to ride will not save you from the cause of your accident, which is: Being at the wrong place at the wrong time. There is a fundamental risk involved in participating in life. This risk can not be eliminated, regardless of what the priests of safety constantly try to tell you. You live life with all it has to offer? Guess what: You might die doing so.

Regarding the Old Man up there: I believe he does not want to see you fall, he wants to see you get up after you fell.

All the best with you recovery,

Thomas

I was rear-ended too, in 2004 - by a women who, it turned out, was on a bunch of anti-depressants and other prescription drugs. I was lucky that I had kept a good gap between me and the car stopped in front of me, otherwise I would have been squished between the two of them.

From that I learned... assume nothing, check mirrors even when stopped (especially when stopped!) and try to have an exit strategy if someone is about to run up your arse. (Pity I forgot that "assume nothing" lesson in my recent altercation with a van.)

Good luck with recovery - yours and the bike's!

Very pleased that you walked away from this. You appear to be bruised but not broken.

As you may have seen in my thread 'S10 Down. What do you have to do?' i was knocked off my S10 by a person who 'did not see me' a couple of weeks ago.

On the advice of a dealer I really respect I was advised to contact an accident management company. They will only take your claim on if they are convinced you are the innocent party, which you clearly are. Once they are on the case, things begin to move very quickly and everything will be resolved far faster than waiting for the insurance companies to sort things out. Obviously you may agree or disagree with this kind of company but I felt compelled to go down this road (sorry about the pun) as the driver is now trying to shift blame onto me.

If you want more details regarding the accident company send me a private message with your contact details and I'll get back to you.

Dang, that's a string of bad luck you're having. I do hope you've used up your allotment of bad luck and will only have smooth sailing from this point forward. Heal quickly.

Thanks for your concern and kind words folks, they really do mean a lot to a bloke when he's in pain and down in the dumps.

Spoke at length with my insurers this morning and they couldn't have been more helpful. They walked me through the claims process over the phone and had no issue with me taking the bike to my local yamaha dealer for repairs, rather than one of their "approved repair centres". I explained that i've had some bad experiences with these generic repair setups in the past and would rather my bike be repaired by people who stand a fighting chance of doing it properly.

All of the witnesses have also come good on their word and phoned me to provide their addresses and words of support. One lady said that she wasn't surprised that I now have a painful back, as she said I was knocked up into the air and landed with my back arched over the top case.

So my bike will be collected on Monday morning and taken to the workshop for damage assessment and repair authorisation. My insurers solicitors have also been in touch and said they will seek to recover my other losses, which will likely include a replacement helmet (just found a big chip taken out of the back of it) and the two hospital Nurse Bank shifts that I haven't been able to work this weekend as a result.

I'm just taking it steady now, dosed up on paracetamol and ibuprofen and making the most of my wonderful wife's and two daughters undivided attention. ::008::

Hi MikeyBikey. Sorry to hear about you being rear ended. If it makes you feel any better I've had a similar year too! Tore two knee ligaments in January whilst hiking (still awaiting surgery), then in April I hit a deer on my bike...still awaiting surgery to fully recover from that. Then two months with no money coz Im self employed. So..hang on in there, try to remind yourself that it could have been worse, and make the most of your honeys doing all the washing up for a while. Good luck. I really hope you start getting better luck and health!! B.wishes. Stu
