I'm 100% for it.

I'm sure the mobile phone lobby just went into ludicrous speed over this.
I am also for it... I remember our first cell phone. It was used for emergencies only and that was it. We now have total wireless(no land lines) and still do not use the phones when driving. I have always thought if you need to talk or text on a phone, pull off the road and do it. I believe most, have to do, calls would not be made.
And this is not just for cages, it applies to ALL forms of transportation in my opinion. ymmv
Ok, off my soap box. ::009:: ::025::

I am totally supportive of such a ban, and have been for a long time. I hate cell phones. I know they have a place, but I don't own one. I have almost been run down so many times by someone yakking on a cell phone that I can't count them. Very poor practice. Outlaw it totally. Hard cheese. R ::008:: ::008:: ::008:: But I mean that in the nicest way. ::019::

People today have their priorities so screwed up, including placing their desire to talk on a phone above any any concerns about their distracted driving causing an accident and possibly killing someone.
Common sense went out the window a long time ago along with their trash and cigarettte butts, unfortunately.

I'm mostly in favor of a ban, but you have to keep mind that there are other forms of distracted driving that are thought to be just as dangerous as cell phone use. So if you think a cell phone ban is justifiable, don't be surprised if there are pushes for other activities to be banned: nav system use and eating spring immediately to mind.

Once you start using statistics to push a safety agenda, lots of things that may be near/dear to you personally can come under fire, even at the extreme, motorcycles in general. There are forces in the government that wonder why we allow a vehicle on the roads that is 100x more likely to kill the driver than a car.

Kinda like helmet stuff.........

NCOM ISSUES URGENT CALL TO ACTION

Your Immediate Action Needed to Curb National Helmet Law & Protect Motorcycle Safety Programs

The National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) joins with the AMA and the MRF in issuing an URGENT Call to Action regarding proposed amendments to S.1449 the "Motor Vehicle and Highway Safety Improvement Act of 2011” that would call for a National Mandatory Helmet Law for all motorcyclists and could jeopardize funding for Motorcycle Safety programs across the country.

Your prompt action is necessary to derail this federal threat to motorcyclists’ rights, as the hearing on these amendments is scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, December 14, 2011 by the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee.

This federal highway funding measure will decide the future of the national transportation program, and of particular concern to riders are three amendments that would urge states to pass helmet laws and redirect motorcycle safety funds to promoting helmet use.

Please act immediately by contacting your U.S. Senators at the Capitol Hotline (202) 224-3121, especially if their name appears on the list of committee members below, and ask them to:

1. OPPOSE and Vote “NO” on Lautenburg Amendment #1 that would alter the motorcycle safety grant program to promote helmet laws by penalizing states that do not have compulsory helmet laws in place by redirecting their federal highway funds and making it more difficult to apply for safety grants.

2. SUPPORT and Vote “YES” on DeMint Amendments #1 and #18 that would remove language in the bill to lift the current ban on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from lobbying states to enact universal helmet laws for all riders.

3. SUPPORT and Vote “YES” on DeMint Amendment #2 to delete the words “motorcycle helmet” from the bill’s modified definition of “motor vehicle equipment”, which would otherwise encourage states to spend federal money to promote helmet use.

Your immediate attention to this nationwide Call to Action is crucial to avoiding another federal helmet law battle and consequentially a future helmet fight in your own statehouse, so call your own two U.S. Senators and the following members of the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee TODAY!

Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) – (202) 224-3324

Senator Mark Begich (D-AK) – (202) 224-3004

I’m in complete support of a comprehensive ban on cell phone use while driving, but the NTSB only makes recommendations…that affect State funding. You need to get a note into your state representatives with your position. I look forward to the implementation (and enforcement) of this ban in my state.

It would also help with another pet peeve of mine. People who call me from their cars, and then verbally ramble all over the place distractedly failing to get to the point, and cut me off repeatedly (because they're driving in and out of signal range) only to call me back just when I was getting on with my interrupted day, to ramble some more. Just pull over, make the call, spit out whatever it is you have to say, and HANG UP! Don't call me eight times in ten minutes, until I finally get so fed up that I turn my phone off without ever finding out what you were calling for in the first place. ::010::

But I suppose that's more of an etiquette thing than a safety thing.

::026:: ::026:: There is no excuse for putting other people at risk while you chat on your phone. Nope. Sorry. Just ain't. Even if "you" are the smartest person in the world, you can't do it without substantial distraction. How do I know this? My wife told me. Here endeth the lesson. R :pol

Some are not capable of driving safely without adding the distraction of a phone. I support a ban of cell use while driving.

Seems to me it was just a beachie surf shop with a rack of various bumper stickers. But then, all you have to do is paste ""hang up and drive"" into Google Images to find gems like these:

Sadly, it is not limited to just cell phone usage. I drive a huge amount as part of my job, and the stoopid list goes on and on.
- makeup (good looking corpse?)
- magazine
- newspaper
- book (this and the above two make you a well read corpse)
- seat leaned way back (so you too can be cool like the rodents in the commercial)
- Book of puzzles.
- both legs tucked up under the driver, dash and rear window covered with stuffed animals (rolling bedroom?)
- and my personal favorite, performed by a woman in a Civic (who/what else?): eating a bowl of soup. Not a cup of soup, but a regular bowl. I was wondering why she was such a bad driver, until I pulled up next to her to make a left turn.

Idiots on parade. Legislation can't fix stupid, as it cannot take into account the resourcefulness of fools. I'd say cell phones are merely the most visible of a long line of stoopid acts.

I (just guessing) have from 2 to 10 near misses a week. Why my co-workers and I are still alive is a mystery to me. I've had only one company vehicle demolished in 15 years, which I say is nothing short of astounding. All the rest were traded in on new ones.
